Giants cut WR Corey Coleman from the PS

FYI
What are they doing?

He is the best kickoff returner we have.
I was so wrong with this guy.
George from PA : 11/24/2020 5:04 pm : link
I expected a pro-bowl caliber returner with some upside at WR.

Joe Judge looks for what a player can do to help his team win.

Apparently, with Corey Coleman, he saw nothing.

Snark aside, remember that people slump or fail in football for the same reasons people slump or fail in any job: Marital problems and bad breakups, depression, loss of interest in the job, sickness in the family, all that kind of stuff. Who knows what's going on with Corey Coleman? It may not be a question of talent, it may be a question of focus.
Judge is certainly putting down the iron curtain on anyone

who is not acting team first. Just another example.

Did I miss something?

Since being added to the practice squad did Corey Coleman do something that you know of that was an example of "not acting team first"?

Previously we had a poster who claimed that Coleman was cut before the season began for some super-secret reason he couldn't share with us...which apparently wasn't a big enough reason for the Giants not to re-sign Coleman when they had a need.

My take is that Coleman was viewed (by Judge and perhaps other Giants' coaches and front office people) as someone who was not quite good enough to make the team.

Later when the team had a need they re-signed Coleman as insurance. When the Giants felt they no longer needed another WR or thought that a different player might be a better fit, they cut Coleman again.

Players on the back end of the practice squad come and go all the time as team needs change.

It doesn't have to be for any bigger reason than that.

Also lack of desire, bad attitude, and basically not wanting to work hard. Its not always things out of someones control
Don't bash Coleman

We don't know why he was cut. I wish him well. He did some good things for the team when healthy.

Serious question...Do you know for a fact that any of those things you listed apply to Coleman?

It would seem that if they did that DG wouldn't have re-signed Coleman after his injury last year, nor would the Giants have signed him to the practice squad.

Why not? He was a 1st rpund draft pick of the Browns, was traded to Buffalo for a bag of dogshit, then cut. The Giants signed him under a different coaching regime, had moderate success, lost the following year to injury, came into a new regime, didnt make the team, was signed by nobody, was re-signed by the same team, couldnt make the team....again and was cut in favor of undrafted players shortly after.

At what point do you conclude he was over-drafted, not a good football player and list him as yet another player who never jad the makings of a pro football player? Thats lile 5 strikes and you're out.

I sort of lumped that under "loss of interest in the job." He may have reached a point where he just isn't motivated enough to put in the work it takes to excel at this level.

I think we fans tend to think of tepid interest in football as a defect of character. I don't think it's necessarily a character flaw to not want to give your all to play football. Of course, the money's good. I doubt Corey Coleman can easily find something else that pays better, and maybe he stuck around for the paycheck. Can't blame him. That doesn't benefit the Giants though, and I'm a Giants fan, not a Corey Coleman fan. If that's what happened, it's better for everyone the Giants find someone else for that PS spot.

Rory, per my previous post:

- drafted 15th, 1st round by Browns in '16, traded before the '18 season to Bills for a 7th rounder

- straight released by Bills beforw he plays a snap in '18.

-signed by Giants in '18 and produces slightly as returner and less as a receiver

- '19 suffers injury that costs the season

- '20 cut out of camp. Goes unsigned for weeks by any team....resigned by the Giants for a few weeks then cut again.

What does that tell you?
Tells me you found somebody your own speed.to post with.

we nabbed former 49er WR Dante Pettis off waivers. He should be our returner going forward with a shot at getting some looks at WR. Most likely made Coleman redundant.

I was thinking this the whole time. They like Pettis better for a similar role(s). Adios, Corey Coleman.
I thought when Pettis was signed Coleman's days were numbered.

From what I heard from people who visited camp, Coleman had a good camp but was up against 3rd stringers most of the time. I think he was cut because they have a number of young wide receivers and we are short a TE due to Kaden Smith being on the Covid list. If injuries and covid change those ratios, he could be back soon.

Whyyyyyyy
just to make it to the NFL
fkap : 11/25/2020 8:51 am : link
takes an incredible amount of effort and talent. The ones that tried and failed to make it to the NFL probably far outnumber the ones who do make it that far. The ones that make it that far and don't stick around too long or make it far up the food chain probably far outweigh the ones that do.

Sans evidence, why is it ok to impugn a player's character just because he didn't make it in the NFL? Is there evidence in this case?

Not really what I was meaning to do, but he had a bit of an attitude problem in Cleveland when he wasn't getting 1st team reps because his performance was terrible. It has nothing to do with what he has accomplished as a football player. Bad attitude is not something conducive to success in any field.

Loss of speed after serious knee injury?
CJ in AZ : 11/25/2020 1:42 pm : link
Coleman's NFL ticket is/was his special speed and quickness. After the 2019 ACL injury, he tried to come back but was cut twice. This is what Joe Judge said about that right after the first cut in early September:

[Context: The Giants were going into the season with just five wide receivers on the roster; Sterling Shepard, Darius Slayton, Golden Tate III, C.J. Board, and Damion Ratley. When the Giants published their initial 53-man roster, that last receiver spot was taken by Corey Coleman, but the Giants released him after claiming Ratley off of waivers.]

Quote:
“First off, we’re pleased with the wide receiver depth we have. I think we’re going into it right now with some speed at the position. That’s something we’re definitely looking to add right there,” Judge said. “I think we have good position flexibility with all of our skill players on offense. We feel good with where we’re at right now. Look, it’s the National Football League. We’re always looking to improve through our own roster development, develop through our practice squad, and throughout the year as different moves happen on different rosters, that can obviously impact our own roster as well.

“In terms of the guys that we’ve added to the roster, each one answers specific needs at that position group, really as far as establishing more depth and giving us some versatility within the position. We were able to add some speed at the skill positions, safety and receiver, obviously.”

Corey Coleman had a history of injuries leading up to the major 2019 ACL. I suspect that Judge was saying that Coleman had lost some speed and/or quickness, thus "We were able to add some speed at [receiver], obviously."

I am pretty sure that among "Sterling Shepard, Darius Slayton, Golden Tate III, C.J. Board, and Damion Ratley," the first three did not increase their speed much in 2020. Board and Ratley are fairly fast JAGs who apparently added speed to the WR position. I think Judge meant that Coleman had lost some speed.

Does that theory sound like speculation or reasonable interpretation? It is just a theory, so have at it.

True but that does not make him a bad guy. I was kidding about keeping him (see my thread on Connelly). We don't know that he did not try or was a problem. He just was not good enough.

Thanks for pointing that out.

The most recent cut of Coleman might well have more to do with Kaden Smith going to the Covid list than anything else. That's the most likely reason for his being cut, and he may very well be back on the PS once KS is cleared healthy to play again.
