NFT: Honor among chess players

Milton : 11/24/2020 9:55 pm
Magnus Carlsen vs Ian Nepomniatchtchi in an online tournament. It's a well-fought game with Magnus eventually pushing through with an enough of an edge that he will in all likelihood win, but then he accidentally drops his queen on the wrong square while moving it (it's an easy mistake to make, I've made the same mistake several times playing against the computer but I'm able to take back moves and Magnus is not).

So what happened? Magnus immediately resigned before giving Nepo the opportunity to offer him a draw. It shows the character of both players that Magnus believed Nepo would offer him a draw under those circumstances and so he quickly resigned because he didn't want such charity.

Here is the game cued up at the pivotal moment... - ( New Window )

In years and years. Just started playing again online vs the computer after being inspired by the Queen's Gambit. Forgot how fun and frustrating the game can be.
Check out The Queen's Gambit

For fans of the Netflix miniseries...

Agadmator does a nice analysis of the show's final game using the real game it was based on (Vassily Ivanchuk vs Patrick Wolff at the Biel Interzonal in 1993).
Spoiler alert - ( New Window )

There also was a great documentary on chess ... I am sorry that I cannot remember the title or where I saw it. It was either on Netflix or Prime (those are the only 2 I have). But Magnus Carlsen was very much part of it ... it might have been a documentary on his career because I hardly remember anyone else. Great Movie.
Nice Reminder

Have not played for years, but sucked in some by the wonderful film and book to which it is quite faithful. Alpha Zero, of course, has taken everything over now.
