What can we reasonably expect from Lorenzo Carter next year?

SLIM_ : 11/25/2020 7:55 am
He had the physical ability. There are many educated observers who think he turned the corner this year prior to getting hurt.

Just was looking for any recent comparisons of a younger player coming off a similar injury and predictions for him in the future.

I thought his problem was that he couldn’t bend around the corner.

The injury is not going to help him.
isn't he a free agent after this season?
Giantsfan79 : 11/25/2020 8:04 am : link
either way cut him. He's the perfect example of how linebacker starved we are that we overvalue average guys because we drafted him. 9.5 sacks in 35 games isn't enough production from a starting edge player on a good team!
Yeah, bending the corner was a problem

and being long legged it took time for him to get up to full speed to then come downhill at the football. He looked like a 6 sack guy to me who might hit 8 a couple times. Hard to say what his AA will be after an Achilles repair. His presence shouldn't preclude them from trying to get much better at OLB, same goes for X.

Next year, 2021, is his 4th year so he remains under contract.

What part of "starting to come around in the beginning of year 3" didn't you understand?

You get that the premise of "just starting to come around" precludes using his career total stats as a rebuttal?

when did Giants fans become so dumb?

Just cut him? He was looking like easily our best edge guy until his injury, and he's young. Sure lets cut everyone.

My first comment was a little bit frivolous, picking up on SLIM’s comment about Carter “turning the corner”.
Seriously, though, I never thought Carter was a good Edge candidate. Watch his play at Georgia. Better as the Weak inside LB in a 3-4 and best as the outside LB in a 4-3.
Post-injury, a change from the Edge may be necessary.
I mean can he replicate someone like Bud DUpree?
Jim in Forest Hills : 11/25/2020 9:51 am : link
Dupree was pretty average until he busted out in year 4. They have a similar skill set, size and speed.

Likely he will not, but I still see an ascending player, someone who can deliver 5-7 sacks per year as the floor.
Not giving up on Carter
Rick in Dallas : 11/25/2020 9:55 am : link
Let's see what he does next year. He definitely showed signs of improvement before the injury this year.
BTW, Fackrell has really played poorly the last couple of games.
He needs to step it up in these last 6 games or adios....
spots on the 45 gameday roster a finite
Giantsfan79 : 11/25/2020 9:58 am : link
I don't think Lorenzo Carter's production justified his roster spot & starter before he got hurt. now he's coming back from an achilles tear. I hope the Giants find a starting edge player who can provide more production immediately than what Carter might provide after he gets past the "starts to come around" label in - year 4.

and if the Giants do upgrade the starting edge position, it's entirely possible they cut Carter coming out of camp next year and go with a younger upside player as the backup.
It's not all about sacks
rasbutant : 11/25/2020 10:10 am : link
He was setting the Edge really well this year.

However, I'm not counting on him for anything moving forward. Anything they get from him is a bonus to me at this point.
These threads make me appreciate pro GMs.

Guys are like Jack the Ripper on here, wanting to cut everyone who gets hurt or even has a bad game.

As for Carter, I agree with the above: Expect nothing. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. That's a bad injury.

You can see he is like a butterfly just coming out of his cocoon .
Achilles injury is a very difficult recovery
DavidinBMNY : 11/25/2020 9:06 pm : link
For anyone, for a professional athlete, it’s going to be gruesome.

I’d expect Zo to be on PUP.. The question is would they carry him on the 53 and IR him. They choose not to do so with Connelly,

I take very possible he is waived/injured next year, would be a shame, he was playing well.
