NFT: RIP Diego Maradona

heart attack at 60. Absolute legend and one the greatest to ever play the game.
Fantastic..

footballer and a trainwreck off the pitch.

He's been hanging on for awhile now. Recently had bleeding on his brain and this marked his 6th or 7th heart attack.

Just a wild man with drugs and alcohol and it caught up.

no doubt.

His play in the '86 World Cup is among the greatest individual performances in the history of sports.

who interned as a physio (athletic trainer) in Europe and said Maradona was like if you took LT and ratcheted up his antics tenfold. Said there were legendary stories of him going to clubs and doing blow off of ladies asses and then going out the next day and playing like a superstar.
Maradona had a lot in common with LT

Magnificent player. Arguably the best ever. I'll never forget his game against Italy in Italy in the 1990 WC Finals. He willed Argentina to a victory.

El Pibe certainly had a lot of problems in his personal life, that was never one of them.

About his play on the field, the guy is an absolut legend, definitely top 5 in Fútbol history, possibly even the best ever, may he rest in peace.

2020 sucks.

Maradona was seen at the last World Cup making a slant-eye gesture to an asian person, I'm not so sure he's above reproach in that area

the HBO documentary (I think it's called "Maradona") is excellent. It's all footage from his career, and unnarrated. Some of the shots of the crowds are unreal - they seem closer to the Roman Coliseum than what we have today (in pre-COVID times, anyway).

This obviously depends which Ronaldo you're talking about, Cristiano sure didn't, Nazario sure did.

Zidane really was unbelievable.

I enjoyed the Maradona documentary too, one of the biggest pro sports figures of the last 50 years. It's not surprising that he only lived to 60 considering he probably snorted his weight in coke over the years, he was part athlete and part rockstar.

Cristiano achieved plenty. Doubtful that Maradona could have won the WC with those Portugal teams. Cristiano is one of the greatest.

his greatness is that he transcended the sport in a way that no other player ever did, before or since. Not so much here in the US, but everywhere else in the world Maradona is the most iconic footballer ever. When I talk to fans from the Middle East, Europe, Africa, Maradona's name comes up before all others, even Pele. Here in the US we think of Pele first. But the rest of the world it is Maradona.
Ronaldo (the real one, not Cristiano)

People that played with or against him talk about him like he was a god. He was on the bench for Brazil's WC-winning team at US '94, and there was already talk about this alien-level Brazilian kid that was going to take over the world.

Ronaldo may have been the more gifted player, and he certainly was the better WC player, but in club football Cristiano Ronaldo has the better resume - quite a bit better.
Cristiano (and Messi)

Has had the benefit of playing in an era where football is more stratified than ever. Comparing through these eras is difficult, but I'm confident that Ronaldo would have scored as many of not more goals than Messi and Cristiano had he played in this era.

Those guys have scored nearly 500 goals. I mean, Ronaldo was great, but he really started to lose his conditioning and was really one dimensional. You have to hold that apathy against him...

Joey,

It's not necessary to dislike Cristiano in order to think Ronaldo and other 90's and 00's greats to be better than Cristiano and Messi for that matter.

Those 2 are great players, I also think Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Zidane, Romário and maybe some others were better.

But I don't dislike any of them, actually enjoy a lot watching Cristiano's unique skill set and clutchiness and Messi's positioning and understanding of the game when he doesn't have the ball.

I don't have previous knowledge on this, but maybe this is how Terps views this too.

Terps is a really knowledgeable football (soccer) fan. If you followed him over the years, he views C Ronaldo as a selfish player, that is all about himself before team.

I think he was like that during his time playing for the Manchester United, then completely morphed his game into only caring about goals and titles, which is the right mindset.

I think he loves himself a lot, takes extremely good care of his body, but is definitely a good teamplayer.

God-like in Argentina and saint-like in Naples and on the Pele-level as a global icon. Listen to the interview James Richardson did with the director of the HBO documentary, like many prodigies Maradona got too much too soon.

Let's not get into discussions of Cristiano Ronaldo until he and Jose Mourinho show up in MLS in two years to face the Portland Timbers. It is destiny.
I also think CR7 is pretty damn self-involved...

Unless you lived in Europe or South America, there just weren't the viewing options in America we have today - Bien, NBCS, ESPN+, CBS, ESPN, etc.

I have certainly seen content on YouTube. And he was absolutely brilliant. But I don't think he was better than Messi. If I'm starting a team, and I have the first pick, I am wasting no time handing the card in for Leo. I think he's from another planet...

bw, no one in Argentina feels that way, they may even (likely)_pick Di Stéfano before Messi. I don't know a single person that watched Maradona and Messi plays and think Messi is the better player. But this isn't a shot at Messi, he definitely is a top-5 player this past decade.

for me Zidane is #1A and Messi is #1B.

Maradona was all that's described above but, along the line someone mentioned, I only saw him (on TV) in WCs and not playing for his club team. And never in person, unfortunately. So I find it hard to compare players across eras.

Anyway, RIP to a legend deservedly so.

Any Maradona comparisons to CR7 and Messi
dpinzow : 11/25/2020 7:59 pm : link
also have to take into account the fact that Maradona played in an era (80s) and leagues (La Liga, Serie A) where defenders could mug and kick at attacking players with impunity. Defenders can't do anything like that to Messi or C. Ronaldo
Yeah I don't care for Cristiano
Go Terps : 11/25/2020 9:10 pm : link
I do give him credit for an insane work ethic and competitive nature, but he's just so unbelievably selfish and self centered. I think he's the only athlete I've ever seen get visibly upset when a teammate scored instead of him. And his selfishness has cost his team...he's one of the worst free kick takers in history but insists on taking them all. And in 2012 Portugal lost a penalty shootout against Spain without Cristiano even taking one - because he wanted the last one for himself.

Incredible player, impossible to root for.
