Thanksgiving Day 1982: The Great LT on Full Display

kinard : 11/26/2020 11:24 am
Still one of the greatest individual performances I've ever seen.

I was a 20 year old kid skipping out of family dinner to watch the game in a restaurant bar with my dad. What special Thanksgiving that was.

Thanks for the memories #56.

I was 20. Traveling that day and caught the last quarter in the airport bar.

It gives it a special thrill having seen it real time back in the day.

having thanksgiving dinner at my aunt's house. That was an awesome performance by LT. If I recall correctly, this game may have been the first time John Madden said he'd seen a defensive player win a game by himself.

When people sadly over hype so elf today’s best and try to compare them to LT. Doesn’t mean there aren’t great HOF level guys playing. But we haven’t seen his like since on D. Not even close
Remember watching that game with my old man

I was 7, one of my earliest Giants memories. That interception return was insane. 260 lb linebackers aren’t supposed to be able to accelerate and run 100 yards that fast
i love telling this story...

we were at my cousin's house for Thanksgiving in Sayreville NJ. We had a small TV sitting on a chair in the dining room so we would not miss the game.

We just sat down and food is getting passed around. My aunt was standing behind me holding a bowl of peas just over my right shoulder.

Then, LT intercepts the ball and I see him start to run down the sideline. Immediately knowing nobody is going to catch him I pump my fist in the air punching the bowl of peas.

The peas fly straight up out of the bowl.... and then right back down into the bowl.

That day... my aunt goes into the fall of fame for not fumbling.

Your old man is correct. By the way, teams back then did not have the same strength and conditioning programs like they do today. LT really was not a weight lifter.

I also have to say the game was better back then. Living and playing through it at that time to me is no comparison.

The game was more violent and raw.
There were fewer penalties called because there were not as many rules.
unbelievable. I was 18 at the time. W'ell never see his like again

* runs over a OT - INT
* runs over an OG - SACK
* Plays off a zone block - FUMBLE
* drops in coverage - Reads play, PICK TD OPENS IT UP ON A HALFBACK!

3 minutes refutes all the stupid, jealous assholes who said at various times that he didn't play the run, couldn't play pass coverage, and the all time best by Howard Cosell "He's one of the smaller linebackers".

Thanks for posting.

and uncle. We were visiting for the holiday (by coincidence Detroit was hosting the Giants :) ). LT was on the Gameday program cover. My uncle asked "is he really that good? Replied: Yeh too bad he's not playing today"
Rest is history.

WOW! that had to be something to see in person
Yes it was. People forget he

if I’m remembering correctly, he came in to start the second half. Most dominant half of football I’ve ever seen - with 1 arm!
Great game

LT chasing down Simms from behind saved the game. The pick 6 was icing on the cake.

DET was a 6 point favorite. My sister bet a co-worker on the game who thought he was pulling one over on her. She gave him DET +6, a 12 point advantage.

I'm sure he was counting his money with DET about to score and put the game away. But LT had other plans. His pick 6 and subsequent PAT provided the 7 point margin for my sister to win her bet. Karma is a bitch.

I was 36, our son was 4 months old (our youngest). There must have been 7-8 women in the house, either in the kitchen or in the living room watching Thanksgiving Day specials.

I was in one of the bedrooms; me and my son rooting on LT, as he wrecked the Lions.

I wonder what caused that knee "injury". These days it would leak out. Back then the miracle halftime cure was a secret and it never got out.

Knowing the what we know now it was probably a curfew violation and if you're familiar with Detroit nightlife it would be an upset if he wasn't in Windsor Canada.

To the poster above whatever your father told you, none of it, not one word was an exaggeration.

There are HOF players that weren't even near his level.
He planted on a "Bad Knee"

and threw a left tackle (that probably had 40-50 lbs advantage on Taylor) .... on his ass.

He really was super human.

Your old man wasn't wrong. I was watching some youtube clips a couple months ago and my girlfriend was looking over my shoulder, She asked which one was LT. I just said "watch, you'll know in a second. He's the one playing a different game."

So nice to hear Madden and Summerall too. Madden's adoration of him is just great.
There are no words too great

and nothing is really an exaggeration. I do not believe this comes from Giants shaded glasses...LT is the greatest football player I have ever seen play and it's not even close. As someone else put it, there are HOF players not even in the same stratosphere as him. He did things nobody did before or since. No other defensive player could take over a game like him. The next closes guy in my lifetime was probably Reggie White, and believe me, he isn't close.
Thank you
