NFT: Electrical Question/Fan

GruningsOnTheHill : 11/26/2020 5:18 pm
Hello--

I posted a question earlier in the week about putting longer blades on one of our fans, but this issue is not related.

The fan in our kid's bedroom had an issue, and as there is a lifetime warranty, the company said they would send us a new one rather than have us send back our old one for repair. I got around to installing today on the day off, and it didn't go well...

After I got the old fan down, I put the new one into place with new receiver piece (exact same model as the old one), and I wired it up just as the old setup was. I then turned the double-gang wall switch on--one for the light, the other for the fan--and both functions powered on. Success, I thought. I then turned the switches off, and I snapped the three fan blades into place. Turning power back on, I was disturbed at how noisy operation was, even though it was spinning at high speed. The blades only go in one way, so I didn't install them upside down.

I turned it off once more and attempted to program the remote, in order to switch the fan to low speed. The instructions were to power the fan/light on, and keep the "stop" button on the remote pressed for 10 seconds until the light blinks twice, indicating successful programming. With power switched on, I held the button down, and oddly the fan stopped spinning almost instantly. I kept the button pressed, but the light never blinked twice.

I re-tried programming 6-8 times, and though I kept hearing the receiver in the ceiling click, I could not get the remote to program. More troubling is that I cannot get the fan to spin again. I even went back up on the ladder, pulled the collar down, and double-checked the connections; everything is fine. With the identical fans in our other bedrooms, I note that I can spin them by hand (turned off) and they will make @2 rotations before stopping; with this new fan, it goes maybe 1/4 rotation when spun by hand before stopping.

I should mention that this "new" warranty-replacement unit was evidently an open-box/return, because there were scuffs on the plastic receiver piece and I could see circles around the fan collar holes as a result of someone obviously having tightened down screws. Plus the special tool for removing the fan blades was missing.

I know it's hard to diagnose sight-unseen by my description, but does it sound as if this is a defective unit where the motor bound up? Do I throw $$ into this by calling an electrician? Do I call customer service and tell them to send me another one? Kind of aggravating to have spent a few hours of my day off for nothing, and my kid thinks I'm incompetent to boot.

Thanks for reading through...
Can you

put the old fan's receiver in there to see if perhaps that is what is bad on the new one?
Did you buy it

Open-box; as-is? If not, and it’s from a big box store (HD, Lowes, etc), bring it back - with a scowl on your face. Sounds like you’ve spent more hours troubleshooting than installing. Painful as it may seem, that’s the most direct way to getting what you want.

Oh, just in case (stranger things have happened) try another pair / set of batteries in the remote.

If the noisy operation in high wasn’t just fan noise (airflow), you can complain about unacceptable noise also.

Otherwise you could be messing with a faulty remote forever.
Figured out the problem

Due to a manufacturing defect, the glass lens bezel presses up against the rotating fan mechanism when it’s twisted into place. When I take the lens off, the fan spins flawlessly; whisper-quiet. It appears that a few washers behind the lighting assembly will give the little bit of space needed so the fan can spin unimpeded.

Kind of hokey, but it won’t be seen. So long as it works, I will be happy.
Good Deal.

Not everyone here knows about Grunings. From West Orange, we were there often in the 60s. Great food, great view. Is it still open?

Hello Pivo—

There were 6 or 8 Gruning’s restaurants, but they are all long gone now. I’ve been out of NJ since the late 80s, and I think they were closed up even then. Anyone over 40 who grew up in Essex County would likely remember Gruning’s.
I was about to reply..

that the blades should absolutely spin freely and that something is not right. Then read down farther and saw you found the problem. Good job in identifying the issue.
