Should Gettleman Win GM of the year?

Gettledogman : 11/27/2020 9:05 am
He wont bc record but if you look at what hes done this year its pretty freaking impressive. Mike Mayock will probably win media fav and with the job he did w Raiders.

Free Agents Signed
Lenny Williams DT
James Bradberry CB
Blake Martinez LB
Kyle Fackrell LB
Levine Toilio TE

Lets look at the draft -rebuilt the OL and added good pieces
Andrew Thomas OL
Matt Peart OL
Shane Lemieux OL
Xavier Mckinney S
Darney Holmes CB
Carter Coughlin LB
Cam Brown LB
Tae Crowder LB

This is the most improved team in the league. Its time to recognize what the Gettledog is doing.

We have the Coach, QB, and are stronger on both lines. Need to add a few more players =this will be a very tough team to beat.

It’s hard to argue he didn’t kill it this year, but GM of the year
Zeke's Alibi : 11/27/2020 12:11 pm : link
is essentially reserved for decent teams that kill the draft and FA to get them to next level. He could be in the running next year if he’s still here and kills it again (don’t see it happening, but theoretically they could collapse down the stretch).
IDK about "GettleMAN",
Dave in Hoboken : 11/27/2020 12:18 pm : link
but I definitely think "GettleDOGman" should!

(great name, btw)
Right now Jones is a bottom 5 quarterback
japanhead : 11/27/2020 12:21 pm : link
playing in a bottom 5 offense.

Both have looked better over the last 2 weeks and maybe Jones and the offense show sustained improvement and success here over the last half of the season.. but right now he's a marginal starter in an offense that struggles to score points.

I presume Gettleman drafted Jones because Shurmur wanted him and Eli's contract was up and the front office seemed obsessed with the idea of a rookie QB "learning from Eli". But I, like many fans, was hoping they'd take Allen, let Eli play out his contract with Lauletta backing up, and move heaven and earth to get Herbert the following year.

Any improvement this year can be attributed to having a better coach and DC in here than Shurmur and Bettcher, and Gettleman going and getting players they want.

Gettleman should maybe not be fired, but should definitely not win any awards.
Maybe

If this team finished 8-8, there is an argument to be made he’s in the running. On the flip side of that if this team finishes 4-12, there certainly an argument to be made he should “retire”

DG might be the only GM of the year

I don't think so,

Has he made mistakes? Sure but all GMs make mistakes. He has a head coach and staff who are on the same page and the result is that the abilities of the players - be them free agents of draft picks - are able to maximize their potential. GM of the year? If the Giants finish 9-7 and/or two win a playoff game, it would be a consideration. Firing him? At this point, it’s ridiculous to even suggest.

Side note: I love Leonard Williams and if we get 5 years of this level of play out of him then it’s a hole run no matter what we gave up.
No, he is not doing a great job.
LBH15 : 11/28/2020 5:51 pm : link

Gettleman has had by far, and I mean by 3 or 4 orders of magnitude his best off season during his tenure with the Giants.

Of course, he set the bar so low in his first couple that a league average off season by comparison looks like an award winning off season. But hey, its an improvement. I have no clue, but I gotta wonder how much of Judge's influence affected it though.
This is the kind of stuff I have been worried about.
Matt M. : 11/28/2020 9:53 pm : link
There is no doubt the franchise finally seems to be on the upswing. And, sure the NFE East is actually a possibility. But, the fact remains, that has more to do with the dreadful play of the division as a whole. This is still a below .500 team which has little to no chance of winning more than 6 games. That in and of itself, sadly, would be an accomplishment given the last 3 years. But, it is still nothing to write home about or give out awards for.

Is the team getting better? Is Logan leading in pro-bowl votes? Do we have the best corner in the NFC in Bradbury? How good is Jones becoming? How good is Thomas becoming? What does Martinez do for the defense?

Our general manager has at least earned his keep for next year.

Yeah, sure. “Trolls start fights.”

Fine.

But anyone with a sincere I terry in the team and half a brain can evaluate the state of the team and understand that the team is headed in the right direction and Dave is a reason why.

And the man had other concerns - like his life - due to cancer that may have made him a little off his game.

He’s doing a good job.

Period.

One thing to consider. I just took a look at the Giants depth chart,
Ira : 11/29/2020 6:08 am : link
and with a few exceptions, the starting team on both sides of the ball is very young. This is a team on the rise; a team molded by Gettleman; and a team that Giants fans will become increasingly proud of.

Notice that our two biggest free agent signings this past off-season - Martinez and Bradberry - are young veterans as is Leonard Williams. Gettleman has overhauled this roster. I like where it has gone and feel optimistic about where it's going.

I think this board needs a GH category for threads - Giants Hyperbole. Then folks can start threads like “are the Giants the best team in the league?” or “Will we ever draft outside the top 3 again?”

Finding a rationale Giant fan these days is like looking for a leprechaun riding a unicorn.

Premature. When everyone was clamoring for his head at 1-7, I said it doesn't look good now, but wait, the season needs to play out. We won 4 straight and everyone wants DG enshrined. The season STILL needs to play out. They don't give 3/4 season awards. They could go 0-4 or 4-0 and that changes this conversation 180 degrees. 9-7 is the moon from 5-11.

It looks good right now, but let's see the whole thing first.

I disagree and here's why -doesnt matter record going forward imo -DG had the best offseason Draft/trade/FreeAgency and in season additions of any GM this year -he wont win but this will go down as one of the best.

[/quote]We have to agree to disagree. I don't judge a GM over subjective opinions on whether an individual move is good or bad. Then, come up with a overall GM draft/offseason move report card. Silly and an endless conversation with moving goal posts.

I judge executives from a higher orbit. It is win or GTFO. You get time. I feel the right number is 3 years. If the Giants end up 5-11 there is nothing you could tell me that could convince me he had anything other than a bad year. Think about what going 0-4 the rest of the way out would feel like.
