Manning, Burress "secret plays"

crick n NC : 11/27/2020 10:10 am
I read this article where Burress talks about he and Eli's own private adjustments they had for defenses. Cool stuff. I know fans are still a little sour with Burress, but I don't think the Giants win the super bowl without Burress, so I am thankful for his time as a Giant. And of course thankful for an all-time great Gianta player in Eli Manning.

Quote:

“Eli and myself, we spent a lot of time together when I wasn’t playing,” Burress said. “I was playing some of the best football in my life and I kind of attribute that to my ankle was in a lot of pain, but my legs were fresh on Sunday.

One of the things that always stood out to me.....

and I can't remember where I read it, might have been in one of the books written after the first Superbowl, maybe Ralph's...

Was that Burress had very, very intricately detailed notes in a notebook that he kept in his locker of adjustments and plays. Wonder if that was tied to this.
I remember this when it happened

apparently Manning & Burress watched so much film together that when they saw certain looks they had signals between each other to switch the route Burress ran and none of the other 9 guys knew about the change.

but remember Gilbride's offense was all about WR changing their routes at the LOS based on the D. But when communication between the WR and QB wasn't 100% it led to quite a few of Eli's INTs.
In-game signals or "secret plays" are not uncommon

with a lot of QB/WR combos. For example, Aaron Rodgers implements actually a fairly comprehensive and complicated set of signals and route adjustments that he expects his favorite targets to memorize (i think weekly).

The Eli/Paxico combination was so much fun to watch for a few years back when they were on top. That classic Green Bay NFCC game was great watching these two on the same page giving the defense fits.

I really didn't have a clue how well Burress knew the offense until I heard he basically was Steve Smith's tutor for the offense. Steve Smith would regularly rely on Nuts for what route he was supposed to rub in his rookie year
Rely on Nuts lol

physical issues on 07, that was one hell of a season. He doesn’t get enough credit for it IMO
It’s very easy to remember Burress only as the idiot

Who shot himself and derailed the 2008 season. But he was an exceptionally talented receiver who was smart and worked hard at what he did. This doesn’t surprise me much at all.

was one of the most aware players on the field on those Eli teams. Lots of homework and research was done on his part and he knew exactly where not only he was supposed to be, but where everyone else was supposed to be. Great example of this was during the Spike Lee documentary The Greatest Catch. Watch around the 7:10 mark when Plax talks about Steve Smith.

Thanks for sharing. Great that they got Harrison in on it. Coulda done with Beckham at the end in hindsight.
Great video!

Not Eli, but the rest remains the same. That ball felt like it was in the air for years.

If memory serves, he slipped in the shower that week leading to the Super Bowl, which put his status up in the air up until game time. I don't know if that was publicly known at the time.
