Statement win

Walnut : 11/29/2020 4:18 pm
This was the type of character win that can propel a team on a winning streak. To lose DJ on the road and still win against a tough team is something the Giants teams of the past 4-5 years would never do.

Many positives to take away from the game but this team is building something special for sure. If we're playing so well without much talent, imagine when we start hitting on some draft picks/FA signings?

For only the 2nd time since Hurricane Sandy, there's meaningful football in December. Season is a success regardless of what happens from here on out.

Calling Cody Core!!!!

The Bengals are not a tough team.
Hardly a statement win
.McL. : 11/29/2020 4:20 pm : link
Barely eking it out against a bad team that had their backup the entire game.

But they are beating the bad teams and that is improvement.

I give a lot of credit to Judge and his staff for doing a really good job.
It is not a statement

win. It is just a win over a bad team.
I think it was actually more of a survival win
Ben in Tampa : 11/29/2020 4:21 pm : link
But the Giants of recent memory would have lost that game in any number of heart breaking ways.

This team got it done.
Sorry but this is NOT
Br00klyn : 11/29/2020 4:22 pm : link
a statement win. This was a game we should have won pretty easily and we just squeaked it out. Bengals are not a good team and we looked pretty flat on Offense and special teams today. lucky to leave with a W

The word "character" did not come to my mind in watching that mess.
It would've gone down as a workmanlike effort
BlackLight : 11/29/2020 4:23 pm : link
and the game should've been over at 19-10. But leave it to the zebras to try and screw us. Then the defense raised up on the file drive to make a play, and we call it a statement.

I don't know what the statement is. We didn't learn anything about the team that we didn't already know. Unless it's that Colt McCoy probably isn't going to lead us to a division title.
If that was a statement win...
SLIM_ : 11/29/2020 4:23 pm : link
the statement was, we suck less than the Bengals.

A win is a win. This was the game where you lose a game due to special teams. We overcame that and that was about the only thing you can say about this game.

Need to play (a lot) better next week.
I could careless what kind of win it is.
Tim in Eternal Blue : 11/29/2020 4:23 pm : link

5 games left in the 2020 season and The Giants are in 1st place and control their destiny. Fuck their record. 0-0.

Let's go!
Defense was impressive as hell again, big fuck up by LW
Zeke's Alibi : 11/29/2020 4:24 pm : link
on that play, and this was the sloppiest coaching job all year for sure. But we did win the game, and really controlled it, with our starting QB knocked out. Specials coverage teams killed us today.
Without Burrow and Mixon

Bengals are as bad a team as there is in the league. Bobby Hart is starting RT. If the Giants lost, it would, have been a statement loss. Do you think that the Giants can beat Russell Wilson and Seattle on the road playing the way they played today?
They found a way to win
BLUATHRT : 11/29/2020 4:25 pm : link
Honestly, I don’t care how. You were setting yourself up calling this a “statement win” but agree this team of the last 4 years would’ve lost. They are learning how to win as a team. Big D play to finish it.

Was just trying to stir the pot here. That was his first post since he joined July 2020. I’m sure he is anti-Gettledog.
I'm so sick of reading about their backup QB
BestFeature : 11/29/2020 4:26 pm : link
We gave up 10 points to him, 4 of those were a gift. Should have been 6 points. Were you expecting a shutout?
I think that people can think this was a statement win shows
Zeke's Alibi : 11/29/2020 4:26 pm : link
people are really just outcome dependant. There was one thing to like today. The defense. Played extremely well, and the TD at the end was essentially by design, but problem is fucking LW's roughing the passer call. Without that we are talking about the Bengals getting the ball most likely with 10 seconds left if they needed to complete a ball inbounds to get that 15. Massive brain fart and hopefully he gets ripped apart in the film room.
It's an OK win
Southern Man : 11/29/2020 4:30 pm : link
survived the post-bye trap and defense did what they should against a team like the Bengals with a back-up QB. Still, far less attention to detail than I've seen recently, especially in special teams. I'll blame it on the bye and you know Judge will have a thing or two to say about it. Of course, the biggest question mark is QB1 – there's a major drop-off after Jones.
Any chance coach judge....

Character? The Giants did everything but actually wrap that game up with a nice red bow to the shitty Bengals. What a fucking disaster of a game. This team has to kick scratch and claw for every g*dd*mn win. Geezus just once, ONCE I would like to see them kick a teams ass!!!!

And now Jones is hurt? Enjoy 1st place for this week, because it SURE as hell aint lasting very long.

We’ve had one of the best ST units in the league this year. Everyone has a bad game at some point.

That’s just it, the giants CAN and HAVE played better than they showed today. And yes, they need to play better next week and behind. But that’s the beauty of sports, you hold on and win today and regroup next week and try and play better.

You’re not going to bring your A game every week. Some times you give up a KR TD or a fake punt or lose your qb midway through the game or suffer a bad turnover when driving. The key is the win despite that. Live to fight another day. The giants did. No one gives a fuck how ugly the wins looked when you’re playing big games in December of January.

Remember that 16-10 win against the winless lions back in 2007? Or that ugly win against these same bengals in 1997? Nope.

Win. Reset. Play again. Hope to win. It ain’t a beauty contest.

PS since when is a great defensive performance not pretty? Speak for yourselves I fucking loved this game.
Statement?
jeff57 : 11/29/2020 4:39 pm : link
What’s the statement.
Quite frankly, this game was disappointing
Greg from LI : 11/29/2020 4:39 pm : link
Coming off their best win in years, they served up a turd of a performance against a Bengals team that is utterly hopeless without Joe Burrow. I was hoping to see them build on last weekend's game and really throttle a terrible team.
We were going to win going away IMO - but the Jones went
PatersonPlank : 11/29/2020 4:41 pm : link
down and that changed everything. We had no choice but to run a lot more, kill the clock, and depend on the D. All this means of course it would be a closer game
Here we go

What wrong with you people?
redwhiteandbigblue : 11/29/2020 4:48 pm : link
It WAS a tough team.....To lose to!
Lotta whiney bitches 'round these parts...
j_rud : 11/29/2020 4:52 pm : link
It doesnt have to be a signature win. It doesnt have to be some indictment either. They went on the road after the bye, handled some adversity, and ground out a tough win in a game they were supposed to win. Its what you want from your team.

However...have you watched this organization the last 4 years? Can you not recognize that this has typically been the kind of game they lose? If you absolutely gotta bitch and moan about something go watch some cable news bullshit. Otherwise enjoy the first full month without a loss that this team has experienced in nigh on half a decade.

We’re we? It was 13-10 when Jones got hurt and we couldn’t finish drives despite dominating time of possession and yardage.

They laid a turd from the the get go and pulled out a win. Nothing wrong with being honest.
jeez , the negativity!
Victor in CT : 11/29/2020 5:04 pm : link
okay, lets get the biggest negatives out: Special Teams were an unexpected disaster. 103 yd TD that was the only reason the game was close, and a huge punt return allowed. Jones is hurt and that sucks unless he makes a quick recovery. Another Engram TO, and maybe Slayton could have caught that ball.

Eric, what about all the "learning how to win" stuff?? Didn't they show that today? They needed to close out a game and they DID IT!
Be careful

If you don't agree with this nonsense you will be called a hater. I lve it, only been a fan since the 1961 championship game, but I am a hater because I don't think Jones is a good QB right now. Bastard that I am.

Its not that you're a "hater". There are plenty of areas to level criticism at this team. But Jones has been very, very good the past few weeks, including today. You're completely inflexible in your opinion, and so you filter evidence as to only reinforce it. Rather than objectively take in information and allow it to inform your views.

Its kinda sad, really...59 years and you still dont know what you're watching.
Not sure about the "Statement" part Walnut.

Really? When's the last time we won after a bye week?
This was a game they lose for most of the past 9 years
joeinpa : 11/29/2020 5:57 pm : link
Instead the defense made plays to in it, a win that keeps the season very interesting

The positive differences in this team from the past several years is so obvious, don’t understand why so many refused to enjoy it.

People need to manage their expectations better.....Hard to believe but I think some here actually felt we could not lose this game with Burrow out and thus were angry at us barely squeaking by.
This is our third win in a row. We are officially on a win streak.
glowrider : 11/29/2020 6:12 pm : link
We are in first place. We are currently slated to host a home playoff game. We control our playoff destiny. Football in both the fall and winter. Amazing.

In week 12 of the shittiest of shit years. We will have meaningful football the rest of the way. A season where every game may end up mattering.

This was an ugly win, off a bye, on the road, after a couple weeks of in-house drama plus a coaching change. This was an important win in terms of the development of the program. Maybe not a “Statement Win” as is usually the idea, but for the org, it kinda is. And for Judge, it kinda is.

That said, if we lost the QB, that’s prob the end. In other news, we see how important DJ is to this team.
I actually thought this game was a good demonstration
mfsd : 11/29/2020 6:20 pm : link
of who the Giants are. Young, short on talent, play hard, better than expected on defense. But short on playmakers on offense, which keeps us from putting away a team like the Bengals

Defense made enough plays to beat a bad team. Not really a statement game. Beat Seattle next week and let’s talk. IMHO
even great teams have lazy, mistake filled, out of rhythm games
Bill2 : 11/29/2020 6:28 pm : link
they won.

I dont think it says much of anything. Just a game within a standard deviation of their current typical play norm...average.

Better than bad teams and worse than good teams.

About what you would expect. A team improving compared to past years. A team with a long way to go who has a tough time winning if it makes mistakes
"Statement" Is We Won the Kind of Game
clatterbuck : 11/29/2020 6:30 pm : link
we've been losing for more than two seasons. Bengals are, indeed, a bad team that plays hard but finds a way to lose. We used to be that kind of team. Maybe we're on the way to not being that kind of team. I'll take it.
There’s definitely a “statement” worthy trend
mfsd : 11/29/2020 6:33 pm : link
regardless of quality of opponent, of 3 straight games where Jones had zero turnovers and the defense put the game away at the end. That’s worth noting and building on, even it none were against a Chiefs caliber team
It seems spoiled to
crick n NC : 11/29/2020 6:55 pm : link
Me to complain about a game this team would have lost not that long ago. This team is still a work in progress, so of course there are still areas that need work as well as more talent. Grateful for the win. Winning margins are so thin for most of the league.

Also, just because a team has a ranking doesn't mean they always play to that ranking whether a good or not so good ranking.
