NYG Postgame (at Cincinnati Bengals) Transcripts: QB Colt McCoy

November 29, 2020

Q: Colt, obviously you’ve been in this league a long time, but this was your first time coming in as a Giant. How did it feel to come off the bench and get this win?

A: You never want to see DJ [Daniel Jones] go down like that, but we always have to be prepared and be ready. It felt good to get out there, call some plays and execute. There’s a few I’d really like to have back, but always thankful to get a win. I thought the defense played outstanding today, kept us in it. This is a tough league, so when you can get three in a row that’s big for our confidence and for our team.

Q: Colt, obviously you’ve been in the league for a while, you’ve come into games like this before I’m sure. How ready did you feel like you were going out there and then how do you feel like you played without watching the film?

A: I felt okay. I was out all last year with an injury, felt like I had a good training camp. Again, I’m always going to be ready to play, but I hate it for DJ. He was playing really well, just like he has been the last several weeks. I just didn’t want to let our team down, I was going to be prepared and you never know when these situations pop up. I work hard in practice and I know my teammates have confidence in me, and I just tried to go out there and secure the win for us.

Q: Colt, I know it’s not something you’re thinking about in the moment, but now that you’re at the podium here postgame – all that you went through after that broken leg to come back and lead the Giants to a win that puts them in first place for the first time since 2016. Can you reflect on that?

A: Honestly, I haven’t thought about it too much, I try to live in the moment. This locker room was extremely excited afterwards. We work so hard and I didn’t want to let anybody down in here, coaches, players. We’ve worked so hard since training camp started. I think I’ll reflect on that at some point, it was obviously a really tough thing to go through and I think it was a lot worse than what everybody outside of me and my family knew, but to be standing here and playing a half of football, I’m excited for it. Hopefully, DJ can get back healthy, but I’m going to do what I need to do to help our football team and that’s kind of where I’ll keep my focus right now.

Q: Hey Colt, did you have a chance to talk to Daniel at all? Do you have any sense of how injured he is?

A: Yeah, I talked to DJ. He was still on the sidelines, he was helping out on the side, so I don’t know anything about his injury. He’s a tough guy, he’s smart, he works hard. You hate to see that happen to anybody, but he and I are really close, and I thought he was playing a really good football game, too.

Q: On that run where you went out of bounds, what happened on that?

A: There was a lot that happened on that play, but I obviously tried to stay in-bounds and kind of fall – I didn’t want to get hit on the right side, I was trying to fall down on the left and then somebody gave me a pretty good shot and I landed out-of-bounds. Obviously, not what you want to do there, but if I could do that again I’d definitely stay in-bounds.

Q: Hey Colt, congratulations on the win. Players always talk about needing to stay ready if they’re not starting because you never know when you’re going to get your number called. Can you just talk a little bit about the looks that you get from the Giants defense when you’re running the scout team and how that kind of has kept you ready to go in at a moment’s notice?

A: It really doesn’t apply to what we do on offense because we were running the other team’s plays. But what I can say is going against our defense every week gives me the ability to talk to DB’s, talk to linebackers, talk to safeties to see a lot of different coverages. Our defense is playing at a really high level and see a lot of different pressures and looks. I think that helps me prepare, but as far as our offense DJ gets all those reps. Again, I was a little rusty today, I’d like to hit [RB] Dion [Lewis] out in the flat, overshot that one. If you make a play like that, it’s a different ball game. I’ll go back this week and correct some of those things. I felt okay out there, it was nice to be back out on the field, hadn’t felt that in a while, so my juices were flowing a little bit. But this is a team sport, our defense came to play today and they played outstanding. We secured the win and we’ll move forward to next week.
