College QB who you thought would excel in pros, but sucked..

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 11/30/2020 7:28 pm
We all have our misses. For me, it's Cade McNown. I saw him a ton at UCLA & thought he'd be a no doubt about it NFL superstar. Boy was I wrong...

I thought JaMarcus Russell wouldn't translate to the pros & wasn't surprised he was a total bust. I was on the fence about Leaf; the character concerns were hard to ignore even at the time.

Who did you whiff on?

Josh Allen has been damn good also.

I wanted the Giants to draft Darnold or Rosen in 2018. Once again I am glad that I do not make personnel decisions for the Giants.

I saw a bunch of his games at Oregon and he was just studly. Great kid, great competitor, athletic and smart. However playing out of the spread his whole career hurt his ability in the pro's. A number of good posters here pointed at this as a fatal flaw and they were right.
This is why the idea a team should tank..

Both Darnold and Rosen have played for the worst teams in football and will get another chance. Of the two, I think Darnold has been worse, but too many variables to make a fair comparison. If Rosen hasn't shined by 2023 (give or take a year), I will include him with Akili Smith. Never liked Darnold. He was my least favorite of the four who went in the top ten.

It's getting late early for Rosen. The dude is on the practice squad. That's like one step out of the league. My problem with Rosen in 2018 was his commitment to the game. He seems like a pretty bright kid from a good background & there were concerns that he wasn't 100% invested in football. I have no idea if those concerns are legit, but they were a huge red flag at the time to me.

It's a unique situation for him because his contract was guaranteed and so he is still being paid big bucks by Miami. Any money he earns with Tampa Bay is subtracted from that which he gets from Miami, so it makes sense for him to prefer the practice squad, which gives him more freedom to jump to a team that would give him a shot at starting if a starting job opened up. It's not like Miami released him in March. They waited until July. If this had been a normal off-season (no COVID) and if his 2020 salary wasn't guaranteed, I think he would've landed on a team's active roster. Choosing Tampa Bay under the current circumstances was a very wise move on his part (considering Brady's age and Tampa's offense).

Darnold has been worse?? Have you watched any of Rosen's games? Darnold had a few very strong games during his rookie season and during the end of last season. Rosen hasn't played well in any game in his brief NFL career. Honestly I would be shocked if Rosen is on an NFL roster in 2022. It wouldn't surprise me if his career is over after this season.

I was living near LA at the time and found both dazzling. Couldn't decide who would turn out better.

Turns out I was half right, to this point. The question has just morphed into who is turning out worse...
I thought both Jameis and Mariota
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 11/30/2020 8:04 pm : link
would be good. Jameis threw some INTs in college and had some clear character concerns but he also seemed to have that "it" factor and he might have had the best Freshman season in recent NCAA history. His Sophomore season wasn't as good but I was just so blown away by what he did as a Freshman that I kind of ignored all the question marks. In hindsight, that 25 TD to 18 INT ratio in his Soph season sticks out like a sore thumb.

Mariota was a weirder prospect due to the crazy Oregon offense but he was just an absolute machine in college and looked like an awesome blend of passing and running ability. I thought both of these 2 guys could be stars.

I also thought RG3 was going to be a menace in our division for a decade. People forget how hotly contested the Luck vs. RG3 debate was at the time, Luck was the safer prospect but RG3 had the higher ceiling. There was a brief moment in American Sports where RG3 and Derrick Rose were the two most popular athletes in the country and considered the future of their respective leagues, but that was truly a fleeting moment.

I said this on the Rosen thread earlier today. Rosen made some great throws his rookie season. Definitely showed he had the arm talent. He was just "protected" by five parking pylons. Hell, that Cards team was a train wreck everywhere on offense...

I don't know the exact timetable, based on a quick search it seems like Rose was already hurt a few months before RG3 played a regular season snap. But this was before all the countless setbacks Rose faced so there was still a ton of hope he would bounce back to his previous MVP level. And RG3 was also heavily hyped before putting on an NFL jersey. But I definitely remember Derrick Rose and RG3 being everywhere in terms of marketing, they were both being pushed so hard.

Are you sure you aren't mixing up years and thinking of the LB/Edge I'm pretty sure DG mentioned him post draft...

As for the QB Josh Allen, that was the miss right now. He's having a break out season and is a real dual-threat NFL QB with a generational arm.

One interesting thing about Rosen
Milton : 11/30/2020 11:20 pm : link
He's been benched a few times but he hasn't missed a game due to injury. Darnold has been injured repeatedly and both Allen and Mayfield have missed time to injury. Of course I realize it's hard to get injured when you are on the bench, but for all the criticism over his college injuries and concussions, he held up pretty good behind inferior lines in Arizona and Miami. It's not like he didn't take a beating when he was on the field.

It'll be interesting to see what Brady chooses after the season. Does he call it a career or give it one more year? If he calls it a career, will Arians sign Rosen to be his starter (or with a clear shot at the starting gig)?

Sorry, Steve, just seeing this now. It's not so much that I still believe him, it's that I haven't seen enough "bad" to shut the door on him, especially given the circumstances in which he found himself. Kingsbury had already professed his love for Kyler Murray before even becoming head coach of the Cardinals and it is was widely reported that the Dolphins already had a hard on for Tua when they made the trade for Rosen.

What I liked about Rosen in the draft was his courage in the pocket and his picture perfect mechanics. That hasn't changed I don't think, so why assume he can't rebound under the right circumstances?

I was really rooting for him because of all that. But at the same time, his Uncle Rico throwing motion and his infamous Wonderlic score were major red flags. My heart said he'd overcome it but my brain said he'd have a tough time succeeding in the NFL.
