Broncos sign LT Garett Bolles to an extension

Jay on the Island : 12/1/2020 3:41 pm
It’s a pretty dramatic turn around after they declined the 5th year option on his contract last season.

The Broncos signed Bolles to a four-year, $68 million deal that, at $17 million annually, makes him the NFL's fourth-highest-paid LT behind only Green Bay's David Bakhtiari ($23M per year), Houston's Laremy Tunsil ($22M) and Baltimore's Ronnie Stanley ($19.75M).

Dramatic is right...

Broncos fans wanted to run this guy out on a rail since S1. Expectations were pretty high, but good for Elway and their org to show patience. Happy for the guy. And my Bronco fan friends are all pretty positive about him now.

In all fairness though, trying to move him during his rookie salary might not have been that smart.
I’m glad that the Broncos re-signed him

I was worried that he would hit free agency and the Skins would sign him filling a major hole.
He was the guy I wanted

In the Evan Engram draft. If memory serves, he was taken prior to Giants' pick, and I wanted Ramczyk as the second choice. Good for Bolles. He has been a bit injury bitten in the first few years, nice to see his talent get rewarded.

There were reports after the draft that Reese was targeting Bolles in the 1st round. Bolles didn't just have injury issues but he also was one of the most penalized OL in the NFL up until this season.

"The No. 20 overall pick of the 2017 NFL draft, Bolles has started 58 games for the Broncos across four seasons. He was a lightning rod of criticism among the fan base during his first three years, regularly committing holding penalties and personal fouls — when he wasn't being beaten in pass-blocking.

But Bolles has transformed his game in 2020, his second under the tutelage of revered offensive line coach Mike Munchak, and it's led to elite production; he's drawn a 90.0 overall grade from Pro Football Focus through 11 weeks while his holding infractions are now almost nonexistent."

So he just happened to transform his game in 2020 ... a contract year. Go figure on that coincident.

What player does 2021 see?

Giants pick #23 was coming up. I recall a handful of Offensive Lineman still on the board including Bolles, Ramcyzk, Robinson and Lamp and was hoping NYG would grab one of these guys for that awful line.

All of them haven't played like Ramcyzk but the Evan Engram pick was probably not what to do there.

I don't know enough about O-line but it sounds like he progressed because of a new coach. The holding penalties were likely due to poor technique and the correction was the coach. You think he all of a sudden just started giving a fuck and stopped holding?

Ramczyk was who I wanted at the time, but I will admit that I would not have been upset with Njoku and wasn't upset with the Engram pick either.
