I'm assuming that Jones is going to be out this week. The Seahawks are the one team that scared me 2 weeks ago as they have the best quarterback by far that we will have faced. I think we've made great improvement but without Jones, it will be tough. We need a strong game from the defense but realistically, I think we need to score about 25 to win.
We absolutely need to change the game on specials. Whether it be a big return from Peppers or a trick play that finally connects (we have been very, very close on a couple this year), we need to not just win that phase but win big.
Which takes me to offense. This game goes back to the phrase, "Don't tell me what the player can't do, tell me what he can".
- McCoy is nowhere near the runner that Jones is. Jones is much faster and has good size. What McCoy does better than Jones is be able to throw on the run. We need to tweak those designed runs to rollout pass plays where McCoy will get out of the pocket and set up some 7-10 yard plays.
- Jumbo sets. Let's put Lemieux at tight end with Smith and Engram in. Pound on the defensive ends and linebackers. I've always thought the best way to hit on long runs is to go heavy and have the defense load the box. If you can pop an inside run, there are fewer defensive players with an angle to prevent a really big gain. Gallman has been getting real close to breaking one. We need one this week.
- Time for Jabril to see some time on O. It's pretty obvious that Slayton is hurting and he is our only real home run hitter. Peppers can be used on a lot of different ways. Send him deep. Set up a bubble screen. End around. I'm even for the wildcat. We have McKinney coming back so maybe he can spell Peppers on defense to free him up for this.
- Replace Board with Pettis. He can be used in a similar fashion as Jabril. Somewhat related... I've always hated the end around to Sheppard. He just isn't fast enough or has the ability to break tackles.
I'm in agreement the offense prob won't score enough.
Yeah I agree. Our defense and special teams are going to have to create something for us to have a chance to pull this one out.
With Slayton injured, all our receivers are short pass threats so it’s not like Seattle needs to play deep safety coverage.
Bingo. Even an improved OL has trouble when the defenders in the box outnumber the OL + TEs.
But Seattle's D front four can be pushed around, unlike Pitt's front 3.
