NFT: eReader and Book Recommendations

LawrenceTaylor56 : 12/3/2020 8:21 am
Winter months are upon us so when I'm bunkered in from the cold I get my best reading done. I've been reading a lot lately on my iPhone and I'd like to upgrade to something bigger.

I don't need an iPad. I just need a good, solid eReader/Kindle. What's the best bang for my buck?

Also, an Game Of Thrones fans? There's a guy out there named Brandon Sanderson who is phenomenal. I'm currently reading the Stormlight Archive series and book 4 just come out 2 weeks ago. Highly recommend.

So, give me a book recommendation. Thanks in advance.

It's cheap and pretty fantastic. It's small and can easily last weeks or even a month if you turn off wifi and all the unnecessary stuff. Work bought me one and I love it.

As for books, I've been working on this recently. It's a good sci fi series that doesn't take itself too seriously

I have used a kindle for the last 8 years or so...still using the same one! 15-20 books a year at least. Mine has no backlight, so I have one of those clip-on book lights as I typically read in bed.

If this thing ever dies, I will be getting one of the newer kindles WITH a backlight. They are cheap, easy, and convenient...and I am over having to used the clip on light at night.

For book recommendations, Ken Follet is a favorite author of mine. His books are mainly historical fiction, so they follow real events in history, but have a fictional story. Lots of actual history embedded. If you haven't read the Kingsbridge trilogy I would start there. The Century Trilogy covers everything from WW1 to the 2ks. I think my favorite Ken Follett book is A Place Called Freedom.

Since you mentioned Sanderson, have you read The Name of the Wind and The Wise Mans Fear by Patrick Rothfuss? Great fantasy books...he is due for the 3rd book in this trilogy but people have been waiting for years now.

Other fun to read series...The Jack Reacher series by Lee Child are fun, fast reads. The Harry Bosch novels and The Gray Man series are entertaining as well. I usually sprinkle these type of books in with some of the heavier, longer novels.

My wife reads a lot and she will have me read some of the best books she reads. Where the Crawdads Sing is a great novel that she had me read.

If you don't have a membership to your local library, you are missing out on free kindle books. I get probably 50% of my books this way through an app called Libby that works with the local library and Amazon. All free.

Always looking for a good book recommendation myself!
I second the app partnering with local library

I just finished-finally-Chernow's 'Grant'. I thought it was superb, as are all of Chernow's works.
Agree on Paperweight

Can get it on sale for $80-85 and it’s often on sale. Can read it in the dark and bright sunlight. Change the fonts easily if you need bigger type. Also, agree about taking books through the public library using overdrive. It’s easy. Only negative is now they’re limiting the borrowing time to 14 days maximum and that’s hard for me for longer books.

In case you hadn’t heard. Follett has a prequel it for The Kingsbridge series entitled The Evening and the Morning. Per my library app I’m about 4 weeks aut. Looking forward to it.

I'm a ten year vet of this site

and

I'm an author!

Clearly this is a shameless self-promotion, but my book takes place in NY, and would be a good read for lovers of food, history and philosophy.

I had a Kindle Paperwhite for years and liked it. However, last year I switched to the Kobo Libre and prefer it. Slightly larger screen, better standard cover/stand, water resistant, and has the natural light setting for reading at night. Kobo makes it easier to use the local library. And I believe you can set it up so an independent bookstore benefits when your purchase your books. But you won't have access to the Amazon ecosystem if that is important. And this take a little more set-up and initial attention.

For books, I agree that Chernow's Grant was fantastic (as well as Hamilton). Always like the Wheel of Time series if you are into scifi/fantasy.

Happy Reading!
I had the old kindle (no backlight, used the clip on as mentioned here

I LOVE My Kindle Paperwhite!

As others have noted, it's great to be able to have the regular e-ink when you're in the sun and the back light option when you're in a darkened room. I highly recommend it and I also love the ability to be able to borrow ebooks from the library. I have a Kindle Unlimited subscription and there are a few series that are always available through KU that have made the membership worthwhile just by themselves.

What genres do you like most? You can also get free ebooks - those that are out of copyright, such as many of the classics, from Project Guttenberg https://www.gutenberg.org/.I am a particular fan of historical mysteries and like the Jefferson Tayte series by Steve Robinson, as one example.

One of my favorite things about a winter evening is reading a good book on my kindle, by the fire, with my cat in my lap and an adult beverage nearby (winter also likely means hot chocolate and Baileys).

Happy reading!

Project Gutenberg is great. I'm reading a P.G. Wodehouse kindle file right now, and the quality of Gutenberg file is much better (meaning less typos, better organization/formatting) than the one I had previously gotten from Amazon for $1.00.

There is a Barnes & Noble in my town and if I buy a physical book I always buy it from them. So I went with their eReader. Love the nook the paperwhite screens are much much better than trying to read from the screen on a phone or tablet.

Historical fiction
A Burnable Book by Bruce Holsinger
a good read
