On the one hand, a team does have a right to see what they have with backups. But this really blurs the line, and does just seem like transparent tanking for draft position.
Assuming the NFL has that ability, I'm not sure what I'd do. But I think they'd have to at least consider it.
All we can hope for is it costs Pederson his job. Hes lost wentz and now most of the rest of his team now too who tried to win tonight
It’s also a black eye on the league for putting this game on SNF to begin with. To me the packers : bears game whether for a playoff position or a bye was always the more logical primetime game.
A lot of fuckups to go around.
Oh. And we were 6-10 so we have to keep that in mind with the outrage
2008 we pulled the starters at half time and lost to Minnesota. Killed the momentum and lost the Philly in the divisional round.
Unfortunately, Pederson treated it like a preseason game in August.
And I didn’t really care that much who on since Giants would benefit either way.
Don't worry, he won't

We didn't deserve the playoffs. I'm upset I intently watched a game and then in the 4th quarter the coach obviously tanked for draft position. I've never seen something like that in my life.

Agreed. It’d be one thing if the Eagles lost a hard fought game. But the fact this was blatantly tanked with a QB who may be the worst QB to ever be on the field for an NFL snap.... just makes all of this feel about as dirty as the Eagles organization is and always has been.
Extensive research reveals that tanking is very rare. Yet repeated, false allegations of tanking can make it harder for millions of eligible Americans to participate in watching football.

The worst quarterback to be on the field for an NFL snap is a bit over the top. Just one example, remember when Dan Reeves as the Giants coach played Tommy Maddox?
but because his team had been mathematically eliminated and he made that same decision (to rest players) you want to make it punishable.
it's basically the same thing. Unless the league is going to fine/punish teams who in meaningless games don't play their best players, this is a sour grapes discussion by the Giants fans.
A draft lottery is probably long overdue for the NFL anyway not just to discourage tanking but to take some of the pressure off the coaches at the bottom of the standings - I just find it hard to wrap my head around all the bullshit Jets media and fans has been posting on social media because they lost Lawrence by winning too many games, and IMO you can't "legislate" your way out of this with fines or penalties since it's a judgment call.
Green Bay LT tore his ACL in practice and will miss the rest of the season. Injuries can happen any time, but I find it hard to penalize someone for not wanting to risk it.
And I'm not "taking the Eagles side" or being a contrarian this is just probably how we'd view it if it were the a game the Giants were not playing in or impacted by.

Sudfeld last night was worse. They guy looked uneasy even catching the snap. Had to look it into his shaky hands every single play.

we played all our starters in week 17 against the Pats to give the NFL a show for the 16-0 Pats game; we had clinched the playoffs. We had every excuse to pull guys in that game but generally didn't. Guess there's no karma....?

People keep bringing stuff like this up. It’s not related. It is an entirely different thing to rest after clinching and heading into a tough postseason.
The players on the Eagles were visibly upset about what their coach was doing..
We’ll see about Pederson, MAB makes a good point, he risked losing his locker room over the hijinx he pulled last night.
I know Pederson isn't saying he rested anyone, but that's really all he needed to do. How much does it flip the script here if Pederson says "you know what, by the end of the 3rd quarter I realized I've seen enough from Hurts, and with 9 starters out, I decided it's not worth him getting hurt in a meaningless game so I pulled him"
If he said that is it ok? does that change things?
If so, it's semantics. and all it does is encourage coaches to lie. Once a game is meaningless (for either team) there is no rule about how a coach has to handle it.
Tanking is simply gaming the system.
That is your case; good luck with it. Let me know when the representative from the League office stops laughing.
but
resting players because you don't want them injured in a meaningless game, made meaningless because you have been eliminated from the playoffs = you didn't earn it and you HAVE to play your stars or you are gaming the system.
Do you realize how idiotic that sounds?

Flawed premise. Your saying Pedersen pulled his rookie QB to keep him from getting hurt?
Do you realize how idiotic that sounds?
A playoff team that is resting injured/older players is trying to win what everyone shares as the ultimate goal, a chip. They've earned their way into the next level. And, perhaps with a hand tied behind their back, they're still trying to win the meaningless game.
Do you really not see that the context matters?
coaches lie to the press and the fans. all the time. For many reasons.
If Pederson said he pulled Hurts to avoid injury, my question is does that change things?

To the degree that there is any evidence and/or Pederson has credibility, yes it does. Justice is rarely perfect, and rules usually leave room for exploitation. So, if is in the gray area, it slides.
But Pederson's stated rationale that he wnted to give Sudfeld some reps is pissing in the face of his audience. The approbation coming down on Pederson is universal; consequently the league office has to do something or the game loses credibility.
That said, I'm drawing a blank on what the league finally did when Belichick repeatedly put down half his roster as "questionable."
It was no longer up to the team to provide a questionable, doubtful, etc.
they had to provide practice participation stats (full, limited, no practice, etc.)
