Judge reviewed the roster on the train into the facility, brought no notes, had done little preparation (one assumes no tape other than game prep), yet Mara said it was the best interview he's been in since 1997? I really really want to know how that conversation went.

He always seems prepared so that's surprising.

I realized it is behind paywall. If you don't subscribe, and it's totally worth it,

I'm not looking at a calendar so IDK how many days in between but the article says that Judge only learned about the Giants interest the night before the playoff game vs the Titans. Then he had to interview with Mississippi state the day before the Giants.

"As Mississippi State tried to close the deal, Judge boarded a train the next morning, Monday Jan. 6, to meet with the Giants. There was a slight hiccup when he got off at New York Penn Station, while Abrams was waiting to pick him up at Newark Penn Station.

“I was like, ‘OK, I’m here,’” Judge said. “And he said, ‘I’m outside Dunkin Donuts, you want a coffee?’ I said, ‘Yeah, that’d be great.’ And I’m in Penn Station and I’m trying to find Dunkin Donuts and obviously Kevin’s not there. We connect the dots and he’s like, ‘Oh, I know what happened.’”

Judge, who is quick to point out that his ticket said New York Penn Station, hopped in an Uber and got to the Giants facility on time for his interview with Mara, Gettleman and Abrams. Judge reviewed the Giants roster on the train ride, but otherwise didn’t prep for the interview since he had been so focused on the Patriots’ playoff game. He didn’t even bring any notes."

This is a really interesting article if you want any additional specific backstory details on Judge that at least I haven't read before. Article goes back a few years on Judge about his path to the Giants.

well, Bill Arnsparger was ultra prepared coming off multiple SBs as the NFLs premier DefCo and was a flop.

He likely was very prepared, and discussed how he was going to build a program instead of talking specific players already on the roster.

Yup I think of it as he'd been preparing for 10 years. The story of Belichick holding internal coaching seminars during the season with Judge, Patricia and McDaniel is really interesting.

But it is an interesting contrast to the story of Coughlin walking into his interview with binders showing everything about his program dialed down to the minutest detail
That was a great read

.
Now that I read it I understand why he didn't do more prep

It's good when a coach is prepared but also good when he can be off the cuff as well. So considering he didn't get a chance to prepare and still was able to impress them, well that means a lot.
Judge was a Mara Hire
Red Right Hand : 1/8/2021 12:16 am : link
Mara spotted him a few years ago when they went to interview McDaniels and Patricia after McAdoo left. Was Mara who noticed him, was intrigued, and did follow up research on him, and put his name out there in the coaching search, and Mara who spoke to Bellichik about him, repeatedly. Is Mara who sits in on his meetings. Mara had his eye on him for awhile, he wasn't some gift hire or recommendation, though he had plenty. If we are going to constantly excoriate the guy for his poor decisions, then we should give credit where it's due. Nice job by Mara, methinks.
