No I’m not a masochist lol but I realized I had never brought myself to watch this again and figured enough time had passed now that I could handle. Turns out I was wrong. I’m like just as pissed now as I was back then...
I’m watching this thinking: not only was it 3rd town, but the Giants also had a time-out left. What the hell was Matt Allen doing? The whole point of kicking it on 3rd down (the advantage that is) is you can spike it or fall on the ball and try it again. Either one since they had a TO. How did he not have that situational awareness? Or, was this the play that inspired the concept of kicking on 3rd down? Just like “the fumble” Inspired the victory formation?? It just seemed so obvious to me that once that snap was bad and he didn’t get it down he could’ve just spiked the ball. I had forgotten that aspect of it. I mean of course “65 was eligible” was the WORST part of the whole thing, along with it being a 24 point lead erased, but this all just made it worse.
I blame Fassel too for not preparing his special teams for that situation, and I blame him for not arguing with the ref about Seubert being eligible since that was the whole point of that particular fucking “fire” play. He literally just nods his head and runs to the middle of the field to give Mariucci a kiss on the lips (okay I made that part up).
Also, question: seubert was called for ineligible man downfield... were there other Giants linemen also downfield and they just named his number? Or no? Was wondering if the refs had realized 65 was indeed eligible they would’ve called the PI but would they have also gotten one of the other lineman causing offsetting penalties? And does offsetting penalties end the game? Or is there still an untimed down after that?
Or was it really that the ball should’ve been placed inside the 5 for one more untimed down?

Ah yup I remember that!! That’s a good point lol how could I have forgotten that it was 69 in the first place lmao
How about the fact that as a kid my earliest Giants memories began in 1992, so when is saw all these horrific losses I didn’t have the super bowl memories to make me feel better. Hence why 2007 was so particularly glorious for me. Whole time during that playoff run I was wondering how the Giants were planning on fucking everything up lol.
you didn't like Chris Calloway?
And his stupid smile afterwards Didnt help matters. He was selfish. Same thing early in the game instead of getting a touchdown he decided to try punish Julian Peterson falling short of the end zone
I talked a ton of trash all the way through, then had to sit in silence while we blew it, and skulk home a beaten man. I’ll never get over it.
Aside from the obvious big plays (Shockey, the clusterfuck FG attempt at the end), I just remember our defense was totally gassed, and they kept having Sehorn try and cover TO man to man. Zero ability to adapt and stop the momentum down the stretch

Worst loss I've ever experienced as a fan in sports. XXV sucked, but that was a blowout. Collapse vs. Eagles in 2010 hurt like hell too, but it was regular season.

1989 Rams playoff loss was worse. That team was a legit contender, the 2002 Giants weren't.

I don't know, the 2002 team was running pretty hot at the close of the season. I think they would have had a legitimate chance to beat the Bucs. Now would they have beaten the Eagles in Philly. That I don't know. We barely beat an Eagles team that had nothing to play for in Week 17 and started the immortal A.J. Feeley.
That being said, I remember after the season, Mara said the look in everyone's eyes after the game was the same look he saw after the Bears game in '85. So I was excited for 2003.
How wrong Wellington (and I) was...

Haha nah I actually remember I liked him. But when I posted that last night I’d just seen that onside kick go off his hands right into Minni’s hands. And I just felt a wave of hatred come over me. Like— come on Chris, catching a ball coming right at you? Do you remember what you get paid to do exactly?
