NGT - Haskins to Visit Panthers This Week

FatMan in Charlotte : 1/10/2021 10:02 pm
The Panthers have some tough decisions coming up at QB. The deal for Bridgewater has him signed through 2022 and if they cut him this year, it will be a $20M hit is dead space. Dead space will only be $5M if they cut him at the end of next year.

Problem is, he played very poorly this season and they don't have a backup they have faith in. Word is that Haskins wants to be the starter (not sure why he's even making demands as he should just look to get with a team), but if they do sign him, their QB situation would seemingly be murkier, not clearer.

Haskins comes to Charlotte this week, so we'll see what happens.
What’s the buzz on Tepper down there?

Everyone all in on Rhule I assume? Is anyone upset to see Rivera leave?
Haskins
Mark from Jersey : 1/10/2021 10:33 pm : link
is young enough and talented enough to come back from his year of stupidity.

That being said, if I was a betting man, I would be that he is out of the NFL for good by 2022.
Tepper has some mixed reviews..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/10/2021 10:36 pm : link
he came in and shook a lot of things up. At first everyone thought it was good, but that has soured a little.

Tepper has cleaned house, but really the bad apple was Richardson. There were still a lot of good people in the house when Richardson was forced to sell and Tepper's has made a few interesting decisions. A lot will hinge on who the next GM is and if Tepper gives the guy room to work

Even the Rhule hire is getting some questions because of the way the team finished. For Bridgewater being a stop gap, they have a lot of money tied up with him. And their back 7 defense has been really poor. If Brady gets poached by someone, that will be another interesting situation.

Tepper should get the benefit of the doubt for a few years and with the new GM hire.

Need a Draft Day Party Coordinator?

:-)
Haskins should take Rosen's example

and get onto a team where he has ZERO chance of starting, where there's an established veteran QB, and where he can sit in the QB room and learn how to be a professional quarterback. Green Bay, Houston, Seattle, even Dallas.
Panthers may have a chance to grab...

Wilson or Fields at #8. That's the bigger decision.

So, sure, kick the tires on Haskins, but that's likely going to be a long shot situation anyway. He's not the solution.

The McCaffrey contract is going to be an albatross, too. Who knows if he ever gets back to form. Just another example of the obvious with RBs...
I don't watch

college football, but when I read that Haskins wasn't very mobile I just accepted it as fact.

To my untrained eye I saw a guy with enough mobility to do what he needs to do in the NFL. I don't think that is one of his problems. Of course, we all know that his biggest problem is between his ears.

You don't think both Fields and Wilson will be gone before #8? I would think one will be chosen by the Jets and Darnold traded. Miami may also be in the running for QB, too. I thought Tua was fairly unimpressive.
The view down..

here on McCaffery rarely focuses on his contract, but not surprisingly, we al know why bw went there.

And his contract isn't all that bad. The team can opt-out after 3 years, he received $30M up front and is making $16M a year.

Other contracts to RB's recently (Todd Gurley and Ezekiel Elliott) have not had the flexibility the Panthers possess with McCaffrey’s deal. The potential out after year three would only result in $8.6 million in dead cap with the contract totaling just $39.1 million out of the $64 million total. Additionally, McCaffrey will be locked into another $8.1 million next March, earning a total of $22 million in 2020 with only a $7.8 million cap hit.

Both Rhule and Tepper have said numerous times that the contract is mutually beneficial to both parties.

And at least from what I hear - there's never discussion about McCaffery's draft slot or his contract being bad. The fans look at McCaffery as the centerpiece of the offense and as strong of a receiver as a runner. And he's a great community guy too.
I wonder if Jameis Winston
section125 : 1/11/2021 7:42 am : link
would be a better fit in Carolina. A leopard cannot change it's spots, but he can throw. If they could cut his INTs in half, he may be salvageable. No idea what his contract with New Orleans is. But Brees is gone after this season and while Hill is a nice story, I'm not sure he is a viable starting NFL QB full time. Although the QB position is evolving as we watch.
I think..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/11/2021 7:57 am : link
the best option for Carolina would be a QB with good short to medium accuracy who doesn't turn the ball over much.

The season went downhill when Bridgewater started turning the ball over and Winston is much worse in that regard. So is Haskins.

I think if a decent QB is available in Round 1, they'll draft one and have him sit behind Bridgewater for at least the start of the season. With Samuel likely moving in the off-season, they can revolve the offense around McCaffery running and short passes and still have Anderson and DJ Moore for intermediate and deeper routes.
Bridgewater can be cut with cap savings
BillT : 1/11/2021 8:50 am : link
Either pre ($3m) ot post ($8m) June 1. So they can change course if the want to. Cap wise if they keep him this year they can get out with major savings. Don’t see how Haskins is a solution for anyone but I guess you could still believe he has some potential. However, he was such a failure on so many different levels it is hard to understand how his going anywhere is newsworthy.
