The league certainly can’t be happy. The want to keep their division game filled drama ratings bonanza. If you have teams do what Eagles blatantly did it would force your hand to at very least move division games outta that spot. I don’t think it honestly got anyone off the NFL or even Giants fans because it seems so dumb to do. As well as a perfect storm of a coach on hot seat playing a shitty team playing for playoffs that generally would beat up.

It sucks as it is when one team had to play 6 division games and one played 5 and 1 with deck stacked heavily in their favor. Really annoys me they play division games at end of season as is, but to have openly tanking in a league where every game matters and margins are razor thin it would kill my passion for NFL. Fortunately this is so dumb that it seems like it will be anomoly and the next head coach that gets told this by his FO sees they can fire you anyway.
I think its the GM
Essex : 1/11/2021 2:45 pm : link
wanting him out because when you hire a new coach it kinda gives the GM a lifeline. As we saw here with Judge. You can't just get rid of a GM so quickly when you hire a new coach because it complicates what you do with the new coach and who works with him. The GM probably thought nothing was going to get better next year, so his survival instincts crept in and said how can I get more time to be here on the rebuild. Get a new coach, sell it as a rebuild, and next year when you are 71. million dollars over the cap is going to be a mulligan.

As I said above, that is why the GM probably engineered this coup. If he is good at anything, Roseman has showed he is good at the internal politics of staying alive in Philly. I mean, Chip Kelly had him dethroned and he convinced the owner to let him stay employed in the building.

Pederson's
JB_in_DC : 1/11/2021 2:50 pm : link
relationship with Wentz was beyond saving. He's had his staff micromanaged for years now by Roseman and Lurie. Some are saying Pederson threatened to quit last offseason when they made him change OC. That's a tough way to treat your SB winning coach. Coughlin wasn't happy moving on from Gilbride, but he got a longer leash after the SB win than Pederson (granted for Tommy it was #2).

The Pederson-Wentz relationship, the Pederson-Roseman relationship seemingly both at impasse. Lurie has to make a call on the three most important men in his organization, and it seems that he's hoping that by choosing against Pederson they can a) salvage Wentz, and b) avoid an even greater organizational overhaul.

This is like Coughlin getting fired in 2010. Except Pederson actually won playoff games in between 17-20.

May the Eagles rot in misery for all time. It never seems to work that way but one can dream.

I don't know, the next year he got them to the division game and probably would have gotten them to the conference title game if Alshon Jeffery didn't drop a ball and Reich was in Indy. Reich has been moderately successful in Indy but let's not. make it out like he has taken the world by storm. He was the 7th seed this year, had a losing record last year. Doug Pederson has made the playoffs 2 years without Reich. Not sure Reich is the missing piece in this equation, but who knows.

Is this verified or reading the tea leaves sort of thing? Would surprise me at all and Roseman certainly seems like that type. Lurie loving him doesn’t surprise me either. I think he’s a guy that really gambled for a SB and came up aces. He went all in for a couple years and it payed off. That usually ends up poorly in NFL.

Of course we see the aftermath of all that today. Eagles are in a ton of trouble for years and I thought they were gonna suck last year. The old injured roster squeezed out one more year at 9-7. It only gets worse for them next year for sure and another bottom of the barrel of year after is likely.

Kind of reading the tea leaves but a couple tweets I saw:

On Pederson-Wentz

Quote:
Doug Pederson firing significantly increases chances of Carson Wentz staying in Philadelphia, a source told ESPN. Became clear keeping both would be difficult. Eagles could always gauge market or adjust with new coach but relationship appears salvageable.

On Pederson Micromanaging
Quote:
RE: Doug Pederson’s firing. This has been boiling since last offseason when Jeffrey/Howie Roseman pressured him to fire OC Mike Groh.

As I reported in Sept., Pederson was angry. He initially threatened to quit, per sources close to him. #Eagles didn’t take seriously then.

It's comical that you people think not playing Hurts who was 7-20 and 72 yards (2-11 and 7 yards after the middle of the 2nd quarter) was 'tanking'. Hurts sucked. What you don't do to management is leave its 160 million dollar asset inactive so when the rookie blew chunks, like he did, he couldn't be replaced. If you are going to pull shit like that, you better win. Pedersen's bet came up craps, he's out.

And before you all get high and mighty, McAdoo did the same thing leaving a multi million dollar asset on the bench for a bum. Unlike Hurts, the bum wasn't a total embarrassment, but he didn't win either. What happened to Johnny?

I tend to like more divisional games at the end of the schedule. Let the teams fight it out directly. But I get your point to a degree...

This is one of the problems I had adding a 17th game. One more game for more injuries and one more game where a team can be even more out of it by that last game.

Your argument would hold water if Sudfeld wasn’t as bad as I am throwing a football. Hurts’ ability to run keep them in that game, and could be a factor on any given play regardless of how bad he’s passing.

Sudfeld looked like he never played football before, something his head coach surely knew about already.
I wonder if this was like the McAdoo fiasco

Pederson chose Hurts. Wentz is likely back next year now.
I apologize if this was already discussed, but
gmenrule-va : 1/11/2021 4:21 pm : link
there is speculation that Pederson made the decision to take Hurts out all on his own and no one knew it was going to happen. This has appeared mostly as chatter and has not been written in any articles so take it with a grain of salt.

The speculation is he chose such a critical time because he wanted out of Philly and he saw that as the way to get it done. The story going around is that he had zero belief in Wentz but he saw no way for the team to move him and his contract. He felt he was stuck with Wentz for at least 2 more years and would be under pressure to play him because of the money.

Pederson saw some opportunities on the horizon - - more specifically Houston rather then the Jets and wanted the chance to be available for consideration.

Hard to believe that any pro football head coach would tank.
Ivan15 : 1/11/2021 4:22 pm : link
However, he could have saved his job by winning or coming close in a loss, if he really wanted to save it. He was playing short handed anyway.

I really don’t know what to conclude here other than assuming that he went against his professional instincts and did tank it. The only other possibility is that the front office told him he was out but he could coach the last game or resign before the game. Sort of like Fassel.

The coach wins the super bowl, has been to the playoffs, and now the team sucks but has an aging and depleted roster.

I don't follow the Eagles so I guess I missed a rising dissatisfaction?

I do see that the QB situation is a mess, but I think Wentz is a head case and needs a break and a psychologist or something. Too much talent to give up on. I just think it is strange because with my limited view, I thought he was a decent coach.
