He is not that far removed from a SB win and has generally had the Eagles relevant since he got there. This season his team was ravaged by injury, as much or more than anyone, in key areas.

on other hand, Wentz fell apart under him which has to cause concern.

the big question IMO is that last game... we all speculated that pulling Hurts could cost him the locker room and maybe it is that simple. But if we believe that decision came from upon high then why is Pedersen paying the price?

Interesting to say the least.

Zeke's Alibi : 1/11/2021 2:18 pm : link
didn’t come from top. Pederson full knew the repercussions and hard to believe even a nerd like a Roseman whose been around the game as long as he has couldn’t see this coming. WFT was so bad with Smith that they couldn’t even take advantage of Eagles defense that sat Cox, put a krimp on the plans. Imagine conversations were had at halftime. I remember they came out and ran the ball like 3 times in a row. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Pederson do that.

Probably best for Pederson honestly, that team is in for rough waters next two years. After stink wears off, Pederson may be able fool another owner that he’s a good head coach with a SB and good win loss record. I pity the fan of whatever team that is.
That’s what happens when you lay down and quit.
Vin_Cuccs : 1/11/2021 2:18 pm : link
This shouldn’t be that surprising.

I’ma little disappointed. Pederson proved to be totally outmatched as soon as Frank Reich and John DeFilippo left the organization.

I really thought his coaching style/decisions the second part of the year were essentially to get fired.

Esp when the Jets seemed primed to get the #1 pick.

That team is in a lot of trouble over the next 3-4 years......

I doubt that week 17 shitshow came from ownership. An owner never wants to lose. This was a coaching decision that ended up costing Pederson his job. It's one thing to try Sudfeld seeing Hurts wasn't exactly lighting it up but after just 1 or 2 series it should have been obvious that Hurts was the only real option of putting the team in position to win.
Great, now they are probably going to hire Bienemy.

I disagree. It's definitely possible that Pederson pulled that sh!t to get fired. He's looking at an aging roster (Lane Johnson, Kelce, Peters, Cox, Graham, etc) plus a potential disaster at QB, unless you're sold on Hurts and one of the worst cap situations in the league.

That's the way I'm reading this. If the directive came from above - he has no reason not to call out ownership for being duplicitous. I think this was him trying to get fired, likely because he wanted out seeing the mess they are in now and getting a fresh start. Plus, he doesn't have to take the rap for Philly having an extended decline if it happens.

3. He wants to move on completely at QB and did a really bad job showing his cards

I can see any of these being options, though I lean more towards 2 and he simply fucked up the timing of pulling Hurts since Washington couldn’t score either.

The league certainly can’t be happy. The want to keep their division game filled drama ratings bonanza. If you have teams do what Eagles blatantly did it would force your hand to at very least move division games outta that spot. I don’t think it honestly got anyone off the NFL or even Giants fans because it seems so dumb to do. As well as a perfect storm of a coach on hot seat playing a shitty team playing for playoffs that generally would beat up.

It sucks as it is when one team had to play 6 division games and one played 5 and 1 with deck stacked heavily in their favor. Really annoys me they play division games at end of season as is, but to have openly tanking in a league where every game matters and margins are razor thin it would kill my passion for NFL. Fortunately this is so dumb that it seems like it will be anomoly and the next head coach that gets told this by his FO sees they can fire you anyway.
I think its the GM
Essex : 1/11/2021 2:45 pm : link
wanting him out because when you hire a new coach it kinda gives the GM a lifeline. As we saw here with Judge. You can't just get rid of a GM so quickly when you hire a new coach because it complicates what you do with the new coach and who works with him. The GM probably thought nothing was going to get better next year, so his survival instincts crept in and said how can I get more time to be here on the rebuild. Get a new coach, sell it as a rebuild, and next year when you are 71. million dollars over the cap is going to be a mulligan.

As I said above, that is why the GM probably engineered this coup. If he is good at anything, Roseman has showed he is good at the internal politics of staying alive in Philly. I mean, Chip Kelly had him dethroned and he convinced the owner to let him stay employed in the building.

Pederson's

relationship with Wentz was beyond saving. He's had his staff micromanaged for years now by Roseman and Lurie. Some are saying Pederson threatened to quit last offseason when they made him change OC. That's a tough way to treat your SB winning coach. Coughlin wasn't happy moving on from Gilbride, but he got a longer leash after the SB win than Pederson (granted for Tommy it was #2).

The Pederson-Wentz relationship, the Pederson-Roseman relationship seemingly both at impasse. Lurie has to make a call on the three most important men in his organization, and it seems that he's hoping that by choosing against Pederson they can a) salvage Wentz, and b) avoid an even greater organizational overhaul.

I don't know, the next year he got them to the division game and probably would have gotten them to the conference title game if Alshon Jeffery didn't drop a ball and Reich was in Indy. Reich has been moderately successful in Indy but let's not. make it out like he has taken the world by storm. He was the 7th seed this year, had a losing record last year. Doug Pederson has made the playoffs 2 years without Reich. Not sure Reich is the missing piece in this equation, but who knows.

Is this verified or reading the tea leaves sort of thing? Would surprise me at all and Roseman certainly seems like that type. Lurie loving him doesn’t surprise me either. I think he’s a guy that really gambled for a SB and came up aces. He went all in for a couple years and it payed off. That usually ends up poorly in NFL.

Of course we see the aftermath of all that today. Eagles are in a ton of trouble for years and I thought they were gonna suck last year. The old injured roster squeezed out one more year at 9-7. It only gets worse for them next year for sure and another bottom of the barrel of year after is likely.

Kind of reading the tea leaves but a couple tweets I saw:

On Pederson-Wentz

Quote:
Doug Pederson firing significantly increases chances of Carson Wentz staying in Philadelphia, a source told ESPN. Became clear keeping both would be difficult. Eagles could always gauge market or adjust with new coach but relationship appears salvageable.

On Pederson Micromanaging
Quote:
RE: Doug Pederson’s firing. This has been boiling since last offseason when Jeffrey/Howie Roseman pressured him to fire OC Mike Groh.

As I reported in Sept., Pederson was angry. He initially threatened to quit, per sources close to him. #Eagles didn’t take seriously then.

It's comical that you people think not playing Hurts who was 7-20 and 72 yards (2-11 and 7 yards after the middle of the 2nd quarter) was 'tanking'. Hurts sucked. What you don't do to management is leave its 160 million dollar asset inactive so when the rookie blew chunks, like he did, he couldn't be replaced. If you are going to pull shit like that, you better win. Pedersen's bet came up craps, he's out.

And before you all get high and mighty, McAdoo did the same thing leaving a multi million dollar asset on the bench for a bum. Unlike Hurts, the bum wasn't a total embarrassment, but he didn't win either. What happened to Johnny?

may have leaned into the Eagles to really consider this move.

What Pederson did that last game against the WFT was a disgrace to professional football. There is no way a game of the significance - especially one changed to prime time - should be coached and treated like it was a game in early August.

I tend to like more divisional games at the end of the schedule. Let the teams fight it out directly. But I get your point to a degree...

This is one of the problems I had adding a 17th game. One more game for more injuries and one more game where a team can be even more out of it by that last game.

..concerning the switch at QB/tanking game.

Could have been an organizational decision, and Peterson was just the scapegoat to appease the locker room.

Your argument would hold water if Sudfeld wasn’t as bad as I am throwing a football. Hurts’ ability to run keep them in that game, and could be a factor on any given play regardless of how bad he’s passing.

Sudfeld looked like he never played football before, something his head coach surely knew about already.
I wonder if this was like the McAdoo fiasco
Greg from LI : 1/11/2021 3:41 pm : link
He and the front office talk about it, and then when the coach actually goes through with it, the backlash causes the front office to panic and make the coach the fall guy.

McAdoo didn't bench Eli at all. Eli benched himself...Eli was supposed to start the game and Webb start the 2nd half. That was what was pitched to Mara. When Eli balked McAdoo started Geno....and never got to Webb.
And they announced

well before the game that Geno would start. The Raiders and bettors knew that it would be Geno.

This is exactly why the Eagles are so diabolical, and why any club that trades with them is so maddeningly stupid.

No they chose Hurts

Pederson chose Hurts. Wentz is likely back next year now.
I apologize if this was already discussed, but
gmenrule-va : 1/11/2021 4:21 pm : link
there is speculation that Pederson made the decision to take Hurts out all on his own and no one knew it was going to happen. This has appeared mostly as chatter and has not been written in any articles so take it with a grain of salt.

The speculation is he chose such a critical time because he wanted out of Philly and he saw that as the way to get it done. The story going around is that he had zero belief in Wentz but he saw no way for the team to move him and his contract. He felt he was stuck with Wentz for at least 2 more years and would be under pressure to play him because of the money.

Pederson saw some opportunities on the horizon - - more specifically Houston rather then the Jets and wanted the chance to be available for consideration.

Hard to believe that any pro football head coach would tank.
Ivan15 : 1/11/2021 4:22 pm : link
However, he could have saved his job by winning or coming close in a loss, if he really wanted to save it. He was playing short handed anyway.

I really don’t know what to conclude here other than assuming that he went against his professional instincts and did tank it. The only other possibility is that the front office told him he was out but he could coach the last game or resign before the game. Sort of like Fassel.

This has been my feeling all along....he no longer wanted to be in Philly give the circumstances of talent/cap and structure.
Maybe someone can enlighten me.

The coach wins the super bowl, has been to the playoffs, and now the team sucks but has an aging and depleted roster.

I don't follow the Eagles so I guess I missed a rising dissatisfaction?

I do see that the QB situation is a mess, but I think Wentz is a head case and needs a break and a psychologist or something. Too much talent to give up on. I just think it is strange because with my limited view, I thought he was a decent coach.

If my owner was saying what Lurie is saying now I would lose my shit. It makes almost no sense, his face almost turns red when he is saying it because even he doesn't believe his shit.

If this truly is the case, Pederson is even dumber than I fucking thought. Probably won’t sniff another head coaching job if this is case. I mean he may be able to bamboozle someone still and it only takes one owner, but how is an owner going to look past this?

$150 Million reasons to fire Doug and Try with Wentz
Rafflee : 1/11/2021 5:46 pm : link
There's no good way to trade Wentz.... so maybe they try with someone new, because they can't win with Doug in that situation....and they can't salvage wentz with Doug There.

I don't know if DP is a good coach...I know He had enough Balls to win a Superbowl, and Not everyone does (Doug Marrone).

They combined a Huge contract with Some Old Bodies....thay suck
I might be wrong but I don’t see a way back for Wentz
bigbluescot : 1/11/2021 6:15 pm : link
Hurts got worse the more he played but he had enough initial success that the next costly int or fumble Wentz has the boo birds will be screaming for Hurts. Actually sitting Hurts in that Washington game hurts the Eagles because I don’t actually think he’d have won them the game and him stinking it up to completion might have soured the fans on him enough for Wentz to get some room
They could hire McAdoo!
Fishmanjim57 : 1/11/2021 7:10 pm : link
That would be hilarious! I hope they're in the revolving door hell we went through, and I hope the Eagles remain in dead last place for the next century!
