as I grew up in the 1970s. Springsteen and Billy Joel are my two favorites among many others.
For Bruce, I hate the commercial songs like Glory Days and Dancing in the Dark, and everyone loves the classics like Born to Run and Thunder Road. But a more obscure gem, one an average fan would not really be aware of, is Brilliant Disguise or Human Touch, two songs that have fantastic lyrics.
As for Billy Joes, a more off-the-beaten path song, underrated or not even known by casual fans, is Vienna.
And to tweak the thread slightly, anything by the band Marillion. Beloved in the UK but not known well here. All of their songs put me back in high school.
Elton John's Burning Buildings off his 1984 Breaking Hearts album is not just a very overlooked song in his vast catalog (was never a hit or got radio play or played live) but one of my favorite songs by anyone ever
Billy Joel's You Can Make Me Free from his debut album is my choice of a good deep cut gem from him. Also if you want to amaze someone who never heard it, play them Root Beer Rag
Jet has a song Times Like This that deserved at least some FM play

A good friend of mine practically worships Marillion
"Spaceman Came Traveling". Check-out his live Christmas Eve performances on You Tube. Gives me chills to hear his voice... classic song.
I'm also a big fan of "The English Beat"... they were never a big hit in the US, but their album, "Special Beat Service" is a beautiful blend of rock, jazz and reggae.
underrated since the album was critically acclaimed and they're not my favorite band, but...
Arcade Fire: Rebellion (Lies) is the epitome of life imitating art with what we're seeing now in America and I just don't think that song gets the proper recognition it deserves.

Here are some others:
Richard Thompson - Gethesemene; I Misunderstood

Saw this thread and the first thing that came to mind was:
"Reconsider Me" - Warren Zevon. Why wasn't this song a hit? There are some beautiful, beautiful covers of it. Grace Weber's version is especially good but I don't think it's online anymore.
Also Zevon: "The Indifference of Heaven," and his version of "A Certain Girl." A lot of stuff on his "Transverse City" album is underrated, but I would especially point to "Nobody's in Love This Year."
Roland and Excitable Boy both good too. Perhaps even more underrated: "Veracruz." I'd say "Accidentally Like a Martyr" but it popped up on some list of the 100 top rock songs ever, so I guess it's rated pretty highly by somebody.
And to tweak the thread slightly, anything by the band Marillion. Beloved in the UK but not known well here. All of their songs put me back in high school.
I was going to post that his entire “Desire” album is full of great and under appreciated songs, it’s probably my favorite Dylan album.

Led Zeppelin - The Rover (Tangerine a great call too)
The Police - So Lonely (I could listen to this on repeat for hours when I was younger and feeling melancholy - not sure why I found this song uplifting and kind of the "stop feeling sorry for yourself, you pussy" song)
not mentioned bands (that I noticed in mostly alphabetical order - and these aren't all my favorites, just cruised through my music and listed what I think are underrated songs)
The Ataris: Hey Kid
The Get up Kids: Forgive and Forget

Hate to be 'That guy', but I was never a Nirvana fan.
I can see both sides of the aisle when it comes to liking and disliking Nirvana.
I won't say I don't like their songs but I cannot listen to them anymore like I did in the 90s/early 00s. I used to be a big fan.
That Unplugged in New York City album is still my favorite performance on TV by a band or an artist. Sucks the 90s were like ... 30 years ago, man.
I liked Pearl Jam first and irrationally felt almost like it was a competition and I had to pick one of Pearl Jam or Nirvana (and forget Soundgarden or Alice in Chains), so I stuck with Pearl Jam, though I would still listen to Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden when they were all massively overplayed on the radio.
Still think Pearl Jam was better but I have grown to appreciate Cobain (and Grohl) a lot more and Nirvana unplugged is a classic.
Elton John - Hercules
Elton John - Amy

I've always thought "For No One" was the perfect song.
My underrated nomination is the Stones "Time Waits For No One"
The Band - Ophelia
Talking Heads - Sugar On My Tongue
Johnny Cash - The Legend of John Henry's Hammer
Nirvana - Where Did You Sleep Last Night
Nick Drake - Three Hours
Cake - Meanwhile, Rick James
The Black Keys - Chulahoma (Great Album)
Steely Dan - Kid Charlemagne
I love a good harmony, and here Paul sings low harmony until the chorus where he takes the high while John sings low harmony. And it's brilliant.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqVDvLDLsjI
The Who - Had Enough and Guitar and Pen
Springsteen - Night and AmericaLand
Meatloaf - For Cryin' Out Loud and I'd Lie For You
Billy Joel - River of Dreams
Elton John - Pinball Wizard
Southside Johnny - On the Beach
I'm also a big fan of "The English Beat"... they were never a big hit in the US, but their album, "Special Beat Service" is a beautiful blend of rock, jazz and reggae.
Oh man, I listened to The English Beat so much in high school it drove my friends nuts. I really loved Pato and Roger A Go Talk from that album.
RE: Into the Mystic & Down Easter Electra are both superb choices.
This is why I struggle with threads like these. When I think of Van Morrison, Into the Mystic is very likely to be the first song I think of.
Into the Mystic is indeed an all-time great song, but the thread starter said "underrated" and I don't think that applies to Into the Mystic - it's much acclaimed.
Route 9 said: The Killers - On Top
Seconded. One of my faves. That album is a gem.
This song takes me back to late 2005 and pulling into my friend's driveway at his old parents house across town. Being 18 - going on 19, meeting so many different people (who I never see anymore). Oh, the times.
Either way, no matter how many years later, the song reminds me of those days.

That's what I meant... I can't classify it as underrated when it's on the immediate tip of my tongue whenever Van Morrison is mentioned.
Fair Play - Van Morrison
Rock And Roll - Velvet Underground
The Soft Parade - The Doors
Sweet Thing or What Will You Say - Jeff Buckley (he has so much good stuff other than Grace)
but will first give a thumbs up to whoever mentioned Marillion, one of my fave bands since High school. Seen them live twice.
a few off the top of my head:
Billy Joel - Zanzibar
Macklemore - How to Play the Flute / Levitate
21 Pilots - Trees / Goner
Tragically Hip - In View
Lenny Kravitz - The Chamber
The Poice - No Time This Time
Squeeze - Up the Junction
Elbow - The Fix
Last one I will add -- if you have never listened to or hear of Jon Bellion, I highly recommend. Prolific song writer for himself and others.
Deep Purple's Purpendicular Album Is a classic from front to back. Right up there with In Rock, Machine Head and Perfect Strangers. It was the first album with Steve Morse and he brought the life back to the group. Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming has that infectious riff.
Ghost - Life Eternal
Def Leppard - Run Riot
Avenged Sevenfold - Buried Alive
Trivum- The Wretchedness Inside
For anyone that listens to Metalcore
Parkway Drive - Wishing Wells and It's hard to speak without a tongue.
Killswitch Engage - Eye of the storm (Howard singing) and Us Against the World (Jesse singing)
but will first give a thumbs up to whoever mentioned Marillion, one of my fave bands since High school. Seen them live twice.

I love My Wife!
Izzy Stradlin and the Ju Ju Hounds do a great version too
very cool 90's band, and my vote for underrated from them is Sugar Free Jazz. If you have a good sound system this song has awesome bass.
and my guess is it may be the only song in history to use the word "paleolithic" in the lyrics.
Along the underrated Soul Coughing stuff, Mike Doughty did an acoustic cover of Mary J Blige's Real Love that is also really good - linked below

Yeah, great cover
Just a good song with a great message, that's been covered a ton, but I like most versions of it.
And the original by Toots and the Maytals is really good too.

I'll check that out!
The song is kind of like a "standard" if that term exists outside of jazz. The toots and the maytals original in my favorite.

Love Steely Dan..
for lesser known I would choose Show Biz Kids, Any Major Dude
They also did a really good cover of Country Road, Take Me Home if you can believe that.

Nirvana was the better band. They broke the scene open. Pearl Jam is pretty good but they're so damn derivative.
That's a great song. Written by Tom Waits, though, not by the Eagles. But they did it justice.
That's the Way
also agree on Ten Years Gone
(also someone mentioned Soul Coughing - Soft Serve, another great great song)
he used to only do it live, then released it on 18 tracks
its around 9 minutes long, but a great tune
Temporary Thing
Come to think of it there is also a DLR solo album called DLR band that was very good and underated. He didn't promo it.
Funny, I'd go with Isis from that same album.
Your Time is Gonna Come by Zeppelin.
Afraid of Everyone by The National.
Have a Cigar by Floyd.

That's what I meant... I can't classify it as underrated when it's on the immediate tip of my tongue whenever Van Morrison is mentioned.
Or That's The Way... but right, that whole album is underrated.

I'd add...
Fair Play - Van Morrison
Rock And Roll - Velvet Underground
The Soft Parade - The Doors
Sweet Thing or What Will You Say - Jeff Buckley (he has so much good stuff other than Grace)
a few off the top of my head:
Billy Joel - Zanzibar
Macklemore - How to Play the Flute / Levitate
21 Pilots - Trees / Goner
Tragically Hip - In View
Lenny Kravitz - The Chamber
The Poice - No Time This Time
Squeeze - Up the Junction
Elbow - The Fix
Last one I will add -- if you have never listened to or hear of Jon Bellion, I highly recommend. Prolific song writer for himself and others.
well, the interrupters in general are underrated, but Title Holder specifically
Ghost - Life Eternal
Def Leppard - Run Riot
Avenged Sevenfold - Buried Alive
Trivum- The Wretchedness Inside
For anyone that listens to Metalcore
Parkway Drive - Wishing Wells and It's hard to speak without a tongue.

I dropped Marillion earlier. And Zanzibar is a great addition to the thread.
