I think the Tide roll, pun intended.

They reacted terribly to motion all night long leaving WR's wide open.
Saban is truly one of the great college coaches in history. Alabama consistently under Saban brings in top 3 recruiting classes with high character every year.
Saban also made a strategic change in his philosophy to a more high powered offense versus stout defense about 5 years ago bringing him his last 2 national titles.

Totally agree and noticed this a few years ago. When Malzahn came into Auburn and then Sumlin he adjusted. He counter pounced the uptempo spread with heavily recruiting/develping the WR's while keeping the power running game.

its part of my own crazy armchair GM moves that I would make which include getting an outside WR via FA, someone big bodied who can make the tough catch - like Allen Robinson. Part of this fake plan is also cutting Shepard, drafting Waddle and putting him in the slot. So you'd have Robinson/Slayton outside, Waddle in the slot and Barkley in the backfield. I think they win a ton of games this way.

You draft Waddle at 11 to be a slot receiver? I think Shepard is fine at slot. Quick guy with good hands that can block and get open.

Too bad his ankle is still hurting. Would like to have seen him at full tilt because compared to Smith - well there is no comparison.

I do, again pending his ankle checking out. I think the Giants need who can win these matchups and Waddle vs the slot corner I think tilts the field. I like SHep but I think he's way overpaid for what he brings. I think Waddle would bring a homerun threat to the slot.
Alabama was on a different level to everyone else

Part of why this CFP was a dud. We had three blowouts which were not competitive games in the 4th quarter

The whole thing is a dud. Down 9 million viewers from the year before. The NCAA lets a few teams send their bagmen around to collect players and run what is essentially a full-time professional program on a college campus for the sole purpose of a made-for-tv event that it can sell.

It isn’t the bagmen. Most these power programs have that. It’s that the boosters at Clemson OSU and Bama are above and beyond and they pay the big bucks for the massive staffs, trainers, and coaches that are NFL level. That’s what’s really expensive, the players are fairly cheap.

becoming so innovative offensively almost shouldn't be allowed. Full marks to Saban for adapting with the times. They made a great Ohio State team (albeit a bit limited defensively this season) look comical with the ways they were utilizing Smith in various ways.

I love Ryan Day, but I think he got a lot wrong tonight. The defensive gameplan, very rarely deviating from base defnese with multiple linebackers on the field, was never going to work against this offense. And the option of kicking/punting shouldn't have been there unless absolutely necessary. At 21-14 inside the ten after the targeting, that has to be four down territory. The Sermon injury was rough, he was going to be a huge part of the gameplan to control the ball and also use him as a pass catcher. But that doesn't change what happened on defense.

Great season, just thankful we got to have it at all given where things were at in the summer. Full credit to Tide. That may be Saban's best team
Booster Support, Bagmn

massive "support staff' Ie, count how many times you see 'Analyst' Butch Jones on the Bama sidelines coaching up the players....

CFB has become a sport where 3-4 teams have a short every year and there's a massive, gaping chasm between them and everyone else.

No point in watching while the NCAA let Bama and others ruin the sport.

3-4 teams?

You don’t think schools like Texas, OU, USC, Mich, Auburn, LSU,, Oregon, to name a few have just as big a booster following and chance to compete as the 3-4. teams there almost every year? They can certainly afford the amount of staff teams like Bama have.

I don’t think teams like Bama, Clemson and OSU have ruined the sport. I think they have set a high bar the others need to reach in order to beat them like LSU did last year,

While OU and ND have gotten in and had their shot, they just haven’t been as good and need to get better. Simple as that IMO.

You didn't know that?

Nothing will ever touch Miami under Jimmy Johnson.

As others have noted, Miami was a bunch of arrogant but excellent football players. Yea Irvin did tons of blowski and Ray Lewis probably killed somebody, but that was in the pros.Nebraska was a team of steroid addled racists and girlfriend stompers.

When the NCAA let Newton sell his services to the highest bidder (Auburn), that opened the floodgates.

It is incredibly naive to think that an Alabama is relying on "large staffs" and its academic reputation to get players on a national basis. And no, I don't think those other schools have the "active" booster network at Alabama. Who would continue to watch the NFL if one team received draft picks 1-10 every year? It's a "high bar" alright, but not in the way you think and it is producing a bad product.
post Newton
HomerJones45 : 1/12/2021 4:03 pm : link
in the 10 games since Newton didn't know his Dad wanted $80k for him to play, Alabama has won the "payoff" 5 times and Clemson twice. LSU is the only other team to win since 2014. Where did William Swinney come from and go to school. You guessed it; Alabama.

Oh please. I wasn’t the one who brought up “large staffs” and I’m not naive, I know exactly what was meant by that.

We definitely disagree on thinking Bama is the only school to have that “active” a booster network. You can’t seriously believe schoosl like Texas or USC have less than Bama in that regard. Did you pay attention to the college admission scandal? People were paying $500K just to get their kids into USC!

I’ve never claimed Bama set a high bar academically just as far as how they coach and play the game. The kids they get could get into any of those other big football schools with the “perks” that come with them. It’s also pretty clear to me Bama does a much better job at getting serious athletes who have their eyes on Championships, while also eyeing pro careers. The coaching they get on the field at Bama is the best and accomplishes the goals these athletes are looking for. That’s the high bar other schools need to reach if they’re going to compete.
Whether Miami, Nebraska, or OU

wins the award for biggest dirt bags, I think the main point we can all agree on is Saban has done a great job focusing just as much on recruiting AND building good character as he has good talent (okay, not JUST as much lol). Similar Belichick that's likely also a big part of why Saban's success has lasted as long as it has as opposed to just being a flash in the pan like some of the other programs we mentioned.
