NGT: Seattle fires OC Brian Schottenheimer

montanagiant : 1/12/2021 7:23 pm
One day after Pete Carrol says he will keep him on. Seattle cites "Philosophical Differences" as the reason.

I believe they made him a fall guy for Wilson's less than steller 2nd half of the season

Seattle needs an OL upgrade. Badly.
I mostly agree with the OP...

Schotty was the fall guy for Wilson's second half slide.

They still finished 8th in the league in PPG at 29ppg. Upper half in rushing yards and passing yards per game, too.

He'll land on his feet.

Unless there's something going on behind the scenes we fans don't know about.

to fired OC.

More evidence that the NFL is a week to week league.

was the reason I had a great first half of the fantasy season and was VERY disappointing in the second half. At the end (during my condolence run-off, sigh) I started Kirk Cousins, and he did better. But their offensive line did suck. Wilson didn't suddenly become a much worse quarterback in the second half
I had a similar FF experience with Wilson

Schottenheimer is another "establish the run" guy. No matter how well the passing game is going, he'll revert to running the ball. Wilson saved his ass a lot over the years.

It wasn't just this year for Wilson either. Last year his production dropped off big time in the second half as well.

He's a smaller guy, maybe the miles are catching up with him.

Couple of things here. Carroll is a run first coach. And that's largely why he hired Schotty after he fired Bevell (he of the infamous call to pass on the goal line in the SB vs. the Pats). Bevell was more of a finesse, gadget guy.

Wilson is a great QB. And he's best when he's in full improv mode. But that team has had OL issues for the last five years. That falls on Schneider. Until that gets fixed, I have a feeling the next OC's tenure will also be short lived.

Amazing what a bad OL can do to to a top level QB

And Wilson is relatively mobile. Ask Eli what that’s like. Bad line play ruined the second half of his career.

I remember Mark Rypien looking like Joe Montana during 91-92 season. The hogs make a huge difference. YUUUGE believe me
Wilson is a super anamoly QB

does certain things amazingly and others things worse than the QBs of at least half the teams in the league. A killer deep ball and really good improv skills cover up for a ton. His intangibles keep them in many games.

In the playoffs when defenses can take those two things away, you get what we've been seeing all along with Wilson his entire career -- a very ordinary postseason performance. And once Lynch faded and the defense was no longer suffocating, they couldn't get back to an NFC championship game. Hell they struggle just getting to the divisional game these days.

OC in Seattle is not a desirable job because of the micromanaging head coach but also to a good extent the QB who doesn't play within the structure of the system.

If I were them, I'd find a way to get Derrick Henry on that team. That would be the most dangerous thing that franchise could do.

The playoff game. Wilson was bad. Sacks were taken because he hung onto the ball far too long. Staring down receivers. And so on.
