-Kluber works out for teams today. It's believed the Red Sox and Yankees are the favorites.
-Per The Athletic, the Mets offered Porter the GM job 1 week after speaking to him once.
-Mets have hired ex-big leaguer Carter Capps as a minor league pitching coach. Extremely intelligent guy. Nice hire.
-A brief summary of what Sandy said yesterday to Jon Heyman
-Sandy has met Steve Cohen... ONCE
-The Mets initial talks with the Indians were general talks about who may or may not be available. To his recollection, Lindor and Carrasco were not discussed at all. The Mets learned Lindor may be available via reports in the media. They discussed trades involving Carrasco/Lindor and then both.
-Dom isn't being traded, Sandy does not see Dom as an OF but Dom will see time in the OF is the universal DH is not here
- Sandy believes the Mets have 2 starting caliber OF's and believes they need to add up to 3 additional OF's including one more starter.
-Thinks the lineup is already overly LH (would imply JBJ isn't on the radar).
-The Mets did have talks with Realmuto but he wanted to wait
- The Mets are still "loosely" (his words) engaged with Springer.
-The luxury tax is a consideration but in the right situation, they would be willing to go over. There is not an unlimited budget
-Sandy "One of the things we want to be able to do is sustain excellence. Which we weren't able to do before. I think part of that was my fault, but part of that was a lack of infrastructure" (made sure to note it's not only about wealth of the owner)
- Said going forward the focus will be the bench, and they will build off of that and see where that takes them.
-Lugo likely in the pen but that's not set in stone. They would like to have his role set by the beginning of ST
-Sounded sky high on Dom and Lugo, pretty "meh" on Davis but said "right now" he's our 3b and we are okay with that"
-Thor "right now I expect him back in the June time-frame, that could move up, that could move back, that was the last projection that I saw..."
Porter is/was considered a home run. His name has floated around as a potential big gm "prospect" for years now.
Excited about Dom. Wait for the DH for him to move to 1B and Alonso. Don't trade him. Was arguably their best hitter last year and he is just getting going. He has been a revelation.

It's always GM talk but Sandy sounded sky high on Dom and flat out said he won't be traded. I actually appreciated in the same breath Sandy saying Dom isn't an OF. It said to me they really do recognize the value of Dom Smith while also noting his defense isn't good enough to be an OF. The "old" regime would have forced the issue.

Mets fans should be most enthusiastic about the née two trains running: not only immediate player help, but the long term Sandy Alderson/Jared Porter/Zach Scott rebuilding an 18th century research and development program

I expect they will still play Dom in the OF if no DH this year.
Eric... it's was obvious because of the pandemic. Nobody was suggesting otherwise. Still interesting Sandy didn't meet him a single time during his previous time as GM and only once since he's been hired. It wasn't a critique.

Spring Training tickets can be sold in small groups of pods, seated 6 feet from one another, but team workouts will remain closed to the public
- Rival executives would be “shocked” if Boston Red Sox outfielder Andrew Benintendi wasn’t traded this week, per Mark Feinsand.
I liked the McCann signing but their lists have been in a word... bizarre.

This is the key. As Shecky has noted so many times, the Mets desperately need to rebuild the minor league system, and with so many MILB players becoming FA's, now is the time to find some under the radar guys.
As Sandy said, it isn't necessarily about having an owner with money, but it definitely is about no longer having owners without enough.

Hate to burst the bubble, but there is a 'non zero' number of teams not currently selling spring training tickets at this time... And were supposed to. Could change any second, but take it for what it's worth.
From Lakeland, you could swing a dead cat and hit several Spring Training sites....HA.
We will expect full ST Reports once you get down there !!

there are fans in the stands at some point this season I'm pretty excited my GF's family is moving from Maryland to Lakeland Florida. I should be able to see at least one St. Lucie Mets game which will be a first for me.

They bought a beautiful house with a screening room and a pool and all I could talk about was going to minor league baseball games lol
I live about an hour south of St. Lucie. Try to go to at least one spring training game up there a year. With three kids, it's often difficult. Will end up going to WPB stadium more often to see them play the Astros or Nationals.
A friend of a colleague of mine works at St Lucie ballpark. They just redid the stadium. Said it was excellent.
Quattlebaum helped out the big league team last summer when hitting coach Tim Laker worked remotely.
I'd be all over that. I'd probably do Betances for Cain straight up if they kick in a prospect. That's only +5.5m against the LTT.
I'd love to get Springer but I think I'd be almost as happy with Cain. He will probably be a better defender than Springer the next 2 years even if he has a little regression and his 2 years $33m is very reasonable.

suggests Familia and Betances for Cain. That's a yes from me if Springer doesn't happen. Still a + CF, a RH bat, and reportedly a very good dude

Betances for Cain is +10. Cain is owed 16, Betances guaranteed 6. The Mets would be 16-18 million under the lux tax
Will be almost 2 full years older at 35 than his last full season, but even factoring in a little dropoff he should still be among the best CF'ers in MLB. Put another way, he could save 10 fewer runs by DRS than his last season in CF this upcoming season and it would still be better than Springer's best defensive season in CF. His 2019 sprint speed was actually lower than Springer's the past 2 years so it appears even if he was slowing down a little bit he was still going and getting it.

Free agent Albert Almora is among the center field options that Mets have looked at.
He's been awful with the bat since 2017 (and never a particularly good offensive player). Minor league deal? 5th OF? Sure. Starter? Yuck. Almora is post-hype Juan Lagares. He's filler. That's it #Mets

Spotrac has Betances lux tax salary counting 10.5m (presumably becomes of the escalators in his contract?).

Lorenzo Cain 2018+2019- +35 OAA in CF (best in baseball), +40 DRS in CF, again the best in baseball

Sprint speed isn't the end all be all anyway. JBJ somehow has shitty sprint speed and is still a + CF.

Yeah it's less relevant comparing player to player, but comparing the same player to their previous years can somewhat track their own regression.
Plays good defense at a premium spot, plus baserunner (even aside from just swiping bags), strong OBP without a lot of Ks.
It's been reported the price is very high because of what he brings to the team beyond the numbers. He's also always hurt.. and a lefty. I doubt that's the direction they go.

Yea Porter has used the phrase "I like the way he takes his at bats" numerous times describing multiple players. Nimmo, Conforto, Lindor obviously most recently. Cain fits that description along with the run prevention mantra.
If they can get a prospect out of it since he's also a salary dump it's a win-win. Though I'd still prefer Springer on a reasonable deal if there's a way to make that work.
Here’s what the Mets are thinking about a potential Francisco Lindor extension - ( New Window )
