NFT: MLB Talk: the Padres are in talks with Tanaka

two blurbs from a larger athletic article

Padres still on the prowl

Even after trading for left-hander Blake Snell and righty Yu Darvish, the Padres are doing background work on multiple free-agent starting pitchers, sources say. One of those pitchers, righty Masahiro Tanaka, has connections to two significant members of the organization – Darvish and pitching coach Larry Rothschild.

Darvish and Tanaka are friends and Rothschild was Tanaka’s pitching coach with the Yankees from 2014 to ’19.

The Padres’ interest in Tanaka and other starters might reflect continuing concern over righty Dinelson Lamet, who did not pitch in the postseason due to biceps tendinitis. Rival executives, meanwhile, express surprise the team is willing to ponder additional expenditures, including a monster extension for shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. The Padres play in the league’s fourth-smallest media market, and their luxury-tax payroll of $165.2 million is within $45 million of the first threshold.

at least one team is spending money to try to win.
I'd rather the Yanks not bring him back.

His UCL is a ticking time bomb.
Nothing in the article says they're in talks with him

Tanaka has previously said he'll go back to Japan

If he doesn't sign with the Yankees, hasn't he?
Cashman

Has run the Yankees now for about 16 years, about 2005 when he took over, the 1996 - 2003 run was Gene Micheal and Buck building the foundation, George and Torre added a few pieces as they progressed through that dynasty. Then came the years following, Cashman and his afinity with the home run, George always loved the big names, and Giambi, Sheffield, Matsui the home run king from Japan, and Arod. One championship with all the advantages in the world. Now we have Judge, Stanton, and Voit. Maybe someday Yankee fans will see it.

No, he said he's open to returning to Japan, but isn't limiting his options at this point.

What the hell does this have to do with Tanaka? Your obsession with Cashman is freaking creepy. He’s in your head. You think about him 24/7. Did he bang your girl?

Yanks need to sign 1 more SP, but I have no issues if they let Tanaka walk. They've got Cole, Severino, German, Monty, and Garcia. They can get a SP or tier 2 or tier 3 of FA not a lot of teams will be spending this offseason.

LeMahieu is the guy they must retain. I would like to see Michael Brantley brought in as well. Perfect contact guy come October to go with the sluggers.
Yeah the Japan thing was a rumor

And he and/or his people shot it down, if for no other reason than to preserve his leverage.
Yankees better start worrying about the pen
Ron from Ninerland : 1/13/2021 8:08 pm : link
They've got the five solid starters with Nelson and Schmidt right behind. But now the bullpen is uncharacteristically thin. What have they got behind Chapman, Britton and Green ? Don't say Ottivino or Cessa
I agree they need to bolster the pen
Dunedin81 : 1/13/2021 8:23 pm : link
But I don’t see five solid starters, I see one or two (Monty) with a lot of maybes. Some of the maybes are very talented, but you need at least one established starter, probably more, to head into a 162 game season.
I maybe wrong and I tend

to be a pessimist, but I can see a major fail year coming up.
Do not like the SP staff and think the BP is weak.

Hope the young guys can improve but IMV Cole, Montgomery and German will be ok. Garcia may be fine but his lack of innings is concerning and Schmidt had his head handed to him every time he pitched last year. Nelson did look better than Schmidt.

People poo-poo Cessa, but he has been as reliable a long relief pitcher as can reasonably expected. I never liked Ottavino. When he throws strikes he is fine, but he rarely does so. He has a VG fastball and uses it to infrequently loving that slider way too much.

I would also like to see them rotate Chapman, Britton and Green as closer. I also think Green maybe the best guy to close. Rarely walks people and goes right at them. In fact, while I love Chapman, I think he is decidedly the least reliable of the big three. But I have strange POVs.
I like Nelson a lot...
Dunedin81 : 1/13/2021 9:00 pm : link
But I’d be (pleasantly) surprised if he became a reliable, consistent rotation option because he wasn’t that in the minors. I could see him as a strong multi-inning reliever though, rearing back for max velocity. Unless he’s turned a corner with his command and control he doesn’t seem like he’s cut out to be an every fifth day guy. I think Schmidt will be fine; it wouldn’t surprise me if he earned a regular rotation spot in the spring and stayed there.

Agree on Nelson. He does well two maybe three innings. I worry on Schmidt because we were told how well he was pitching in the Minors and just got hammered in MLB. It is about time some of these pitchers in the system started producing.
Schmidt didn’t have the benefit of a normal MILB season
Dunedin81 : 1/13/2021 10:05 pm : link
I think he’ll be alright. Deivi is a little more boom or bust just because his stature is so unique. There are other guys who could turn into serviceable back end types, like Keller, but the real studs are a year or two away thanks to Covid. They almost have to deal a few because they’re occupying so many 40 man spots.
