-Mets interested in Albert Almora. He's a horrid offensive player. Think Juan Lagares. The Cubs non-tendered him despite a projected... 1.5 million award. 5th OF/minor league deal? Sure. Otherwise, nothing interesting about him.

-Kluber was 88-90, teams apparently came away intrigued. Cishek and Swarzak also threw.

-Martino says there is speculation Tanaka is headed back to Japan despite his denials

-Phillies met with Realmuto

Jose Martinez was worth 4.0 fWAR 2017+2018. Horrendous OF (more of a DH) but solid on a split deal

Love the signing. Great gamble if there’s a DH. Could be PH depth too. If Alonso or Smith went down, and there’s a DH, he could really fill in for us and give us some pop.

Nice sneaky move to add a bat. His fielding is Jay Bruce style bad though like you said.
Yeah

prior to 2019 he looked like a real find by the Cardinals. Was still a passable MLB hitter (101 wRC+ in 2019) he IS turning 33 so it's beyond reasonable he's "done" but at the cost no-brainer.

Agreed. Nice depth move.

They have made 0 moves that I disagree with so far. I didn't love 4 years for McCann but given the AAV and dearth of C's it made sense. May, Lindor, McCann, Carrasco, Porter etc.

Martinez is -24 DRS career in the OF, -27 OAA, so he's an OF in name only. DH/1b, still nice at the price.

Jose Martinez has been with... the White Sox, Orioles, Braves, Royals, Cardinals, Cubs, and now Mets. 33 in July, he's been in pro ball since he was 17 years old #Mets

I think it's just an example of Cohen being able to flex his muscles and throw 250,000 down the drain if need be. Split deal is why this makes sense. Pray his 2000 Yankees Glenallen Hill and not 33 and "done". Wasn't great in 2019 but still hit lefties.
hopefully this is it

for clubhouse guys, if that's what he is, and we don't see Todd Frazier signed again because he's a good clubhouse guy.

Same. I'd have perhaps been more aggressive on Realmuto and then Carrasco as a standalone pickup, but difficult to say if that was possible (they acknowledged trying both of those things). Would have also called on and considered Arenado, but hard to argue with Lindor AND Carrasco instead.

McCann on 4 years seems worth the upside. If his defense is as strong as it was last year that will be a great deal.

Jose Martinez is one of the true characters of the modern game. He’s carefree and frolicsome, quirky and clever, enthusiastic and elastic. He’s sort of like a human version of those inflatable dancing tube men in front of car dealerships. We take for granted that he’s in our lives most summer nights — it’s as if Max Patkin, “the Clown Prince of Baseball,” actually could hit .280 in the bigs. And Martinez leads the league in happy.

The bidding on Corey Kluber is moving quickly and will likely reach a conclusion by this weekend. The two-time Cy Young Award winner threw for scouts Wednesday, in a session that went well.

The Marlins (as usual) will be a pain in the ass in 2021. Sixto/Lopez/Alcantara/Hernandez/Rogers with Cabrera pretty close... huge Meyer fan, he's going to be nasty

Lets hope they don’t amend the schedule and give us all NL East games.

The reliever market, at least, might finally be gaining momentum in the wake of Liam Hendriks’ massive deal with the White Sox. Pedro Baez joined Houston yesterday, and Archie Bradley is closing in on a deal of his own, sources tell me and
@JeffPassan
. Team unknown at this point.

I know they've been expressing desire for a LHP but obviously Porter familiarity makes this something worth keeping an eye on.
Sounds
DanMetroMan : 1/14/2021 5:30 pm : link
like Theo is angling to become the next commish. Talk about a legend if that happens. Sox ring, Cubs ring, then becomes commish?

Don't think they have room for both Bradley and Hand.

Familia, Betances, Diaz, May, Brach, Barnes, Lugo, Castro all have guaranteed contracts. 2 more? I find it hard to believe. Gotta believe they add one more (likely hand) and then some non-guaranteed types unless they make a few trades.
yeah I thnk it would be 1 or the other
Eric on Li : 1/14/2021 5:37 pm : link
Bradley for his career doesn't have strong L/R splits, might be reverse if anything, but if you take out his career as a starter and just focus on his career as a reliever he basically had 2 good years vs. lefties in 17/18 before last year sandwiched between 2 poor years 16/19 (.800+ ops against). Last year he was excellent vs. lefties but just 10 innings so pretty small sample.
Related but also

unrelated looking at the 40 man they have a few guys they could dump pretty easily.

Garcia, Zamora, Tarpley (I like his stuff, just saying he could easily be dropped), Drew Smith.. Oswalt and Gsellman are probably safe "for now" but they also could go with no problem.
Bradley
DanMetroMan : 1/14/2021 5:42 pm : link
to the Phillies, I assume he'll close.
going back through Hands numbers I'd still prefer him by a good margin
Eric on Li : 1/14/2021 5:45 pm : link
but Bradley would be an arguable choice. He is higher velocity. And I'd imagine will be cheaper.

And if they do deal Betances/Familia to save money maybe they could fit both of them?

Matz too, but I doubt they'd do that before ST. His roster spot would likely only go to the person who beats him out.

I have to believe Matz is safer than the others I named. I'm not saying he makes the team but barring multiple SP's added I assume they risk the 833,000 to see what he has.

NL East
DanMetroMan : 1/14/2021 5:48 pm : link
should be fun

Marlins will be annoying, Phillies aren't as bad as people are saying, I'm not big on the Nats but I'm sure they will be fine/good. Braves are looking for yet another SP.
1 year 6m for Bradley
Eric on Li : 1/14/2021 5:49 pm : link
wonder if we would have chose him over May had Porter been around earlier. Very similar so not second guessing or criticizing may, just curious.
I just moved across the street from Nationals park....
Italianju : 1/14/2021 5:52 pm : link
hoping we get to the point where it safe to go to games so i can go to a bunch to root against them, haha.

NL East is going to be very tough.

the Phillies... people are laughing at them because of the owner.

Nola/Eflin/Wheeler is as good of a top 3 as any. Howard/Velasquez round out a very solid rotation on paper and then their lineup is solid throughout. Obviously, they need to keep Realmuto.

Robles was supposed to be THE guy for them (I'm not jinxing the Mets, he can still be good) but then Soto went and went MVP-supernova stud. Luckily the Nats farm sucks.
I think they are gonna get Hand for 2 years
Eric on Li : 1/14/2021 6:20 pm : link
I’d guess slightly lower aav than his original salary. There’s always downside just like the Betances deal, but I’d rather roll the dice on having control the 2nd year if he’s good. I’d rather risk the extra year if he’s bad than miss the extra year if he’s good.
Phillies have no depth
CMicks3110 : 1/14/2021 6:54 pm : link
They are very top heavy. And there big bats are not that good. Harper, McCutchen, Segura, they don’t scare me. Their bullpen, even with Bradley, is still awful

They have 3 above average SP and Howard should be very good as well (was rushed heavily). Their lineup is strong throughout
7 hitters league average or better by OPS+, 5 over 120. They aren’t some great team at all but they are very solid. Any team with 3 SP with a 3.19, 3.22 and 3.39 FIP is going to be decent.
.
DanMetroMan : 1/14/2021 7:35 pm : link
Quick reminder.. the Mets bullpen finished 15th in fWAR, 16th in FIP. I like the May signing a lot but... the Mets 100% could use more help in their BP.

The Twins had 6 RP in 2020 with sub 3.50 FIPs. Nope. The Mets couldn't use more help the pen. The Dodgers had 7 RP's with 10 or more appearances with a sub 3.42 FIP and added Knebel career 3.31. The 2021 Mets have ONE RP who posted a sub 3.42 FIP in 2020 (Diaz).
