First game is tonight at 7 PM and the second game is Saturday at 7 PM.
You know the storylines: Laf's debut. Miller's debut. Kakko's redemption tour. The beginning of Igor's reign. Jack Johnson's.....yeah.
First three lines:
Kreider | Zibanejad | Buchnevich
Panarin | Strome | Kakko
Lafreniere | Chytil | Gauthier
Top-4 defensive pairs:
Miller | Trouba
Lindgren | Fox
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!!!!
I'm a Rangers fan but not great on the nuts and bolts.

Wouldn't look too much into it. For all intents and purposes, we have two first lines and a very young but talented third line. The KZB line is a mainstay and Zibanejad is our #1 C.
I'm a Rangers fan but not great on the nuts and bolts.
The first two lines play pretty equivalent time at even strength so I wouldn't say he's really on the "second line"....kind of line 1b.
Also he averages around 20 minutes on ice a game when you factor in PP time which is right around where most of the elite level players are.
Not to mention if Kreider and Panarin swapped spots teams would just use their shut down D pair against that top line which neutralizes a bit. Same reason Pittsburgh splits up Malkin and Crosby at even strength.
Does anyone know if that line is going to be a thing?
that would be a really fun line.
Not a typical 3rd line by any stretch, but a lot of fun.
Not sure if that was before or after Barzal signed and if Wahlstrom or Bellows even made the team/taxi squad or AHL.

Malkin and Crosby are both centers. but I agree with your point.

That was in one of the scrimmages. Beats are reporting JGP with Bellows and Ross the boss. Wahlstrom did make the roster.
Your playoff run was impressive last September (still seems odd to say for hockey) and you are pretty much returning the same squad.
Obviously for the Rangers - we need to see how the kids develop. Excited for K'Andre teaming with Trouba. I hope Kakko develops and of course Lafrenière.
I had a rough week with some family issues so looking forward to tonight!

The bubble playoff run was a fun ride and they played great, but that's likely the high water mark for this group.
The shutdown really benefitted the Islanders. They got healthy. An older roster with a style that leads to injuries. The 4th line, Brassard, boychuk, all looked like different players after the shutdown gave them their legs back. They were deep too.
Now they have less depth and a condensed schedule. I'm seeing a low seed playoff team unless one of the kids makes a jump. Would not be surprised if they start shipping out the 30 somethings up front.
this guy is about as fun to watch as anyone I've seen in a long time. He was the guy who did the lacrosse style goal in a pro game (SHL) twice - before Svechnikov did it in the NHL.
just a super creative, smart, player.

ooze skill, but man they got pushed around in the playoffs (by Vegas?) whoever it was physically imposed their will on them.
Let's go Rangers
I plan on using http://bilasport.net/ tonight.
It'll be about 45 seconds or so behind live so be careful who you look at texts from haha

That has been the fan dream all off season, and both Wahlstrom and Bellows supposedly had string camps. I would bet that is the evntual plan, but doubt you see that early in the season.
Barry likes his vets and I would not be surprised to see JGP with Komarov on one wing. Dal Colle is on IR or he would likely be there too.
I hope I am wrong about that.

Komarov is heading to LTIR as soon as eligible. I think Johnston is rotating between 3rd and 4th lines depending on who is healthy when they want the extra tough guy in the line-up and sitting versus teams that require more skill guys.
Excited to see how the youngster do. Kakko, Lafreniere, Miller.
At best, they're unproven. If K'Andre can step up and Trouba redeems himself, we may have a shot. I think we're a fringe playoff team in the East based solely on our forwards, but how far we go in the playoffs (should we make it) will depend on the play of the defense.
They’ll need to beat out two of BOS, NYI, PIT, PHI and WSH. Sure they have young talent and Panarin but that’s a tall order to ask from such a young team with that d corps IMO.
They will keep Komarov handy because Cizikas is becoming oft-injured and the pk gets very thin with him out of the lineup.
Some of the old guard in the east look ready to fade, especially Pittsburgh
Rangers will be the sexy media pick the next year and the year after
I would imagine NHL tv will do a free preview for a few days. The game tonight is NHL Network I think as well.
yeah - they look pretty bad tonight
Holy hell
non-competitive first period is of concern.
Rangers picked up just where they left off....getting swept.
I think I am with Greg, fuck Quinn.
Quinn fired by game 10.

Not trying to be a dick here. I know Brooks in the Post says the playoffs is a realistic goal this year but is it? The realigned division for this year is absolutely loaded and this team is carrying so many young players.
Seriously dude, this is the 2nd time in a year where his team has not been ready to play at a competitive level. Ive seen enough.
You lay down for the Playoffs....completely, and then your stupid squad is not ready to play Game 1. Fuck this guy. Prep school knobber.

Not to mention vets who arent ready to go. Terrible prep for the mini season and now the first game in MSG since March. Coach stinks.
The Islanders will be a top team this year we have solid underrated talent and very well coached.....don't give up the ship so early yuck

I wanted him fired a year ago. This monstrosity of a game is just garnish.

Did you happen to watch the games in the summer? Because that was prolonged stink....coming from a team that was hot before shutdown.
Do you only watch sports to bitch about the refs? If the play is blown dead it is not a goal.
Loved the start tonight. Trotz runs a tight camp and Isles looked ready to go. Isles top 6 plays such a sound two way game. Dobson looked like he belonged. Isles will face a better effort on Saturday so hopefully are ready to play.
NYR fans shouldn’t overreact to the one game IMO. Sure they could surprise and contend for the playoffs, but it’s an awfully green team. More important from their perspective how the team looks at the end of the year rather than the beginning.
Does anyone think it’s realistic that we’ll see fans in the arena by May?
Hardy har har

Really hope so!
Eventually they'll get around to firing the right guy.
Flip the coaches in this game and play would have been very different.
And in a blowout and a game that was clearly lost, why would you not play the kids?

Shit, they'll probably hire Mike Sullivan next offseason if Pittsburgh lets him go.
They should try for Gallant midseason even though he seems destined to go to Seattle. Chances are it'll be Jacques Martin, Mike Babcock, Ken Hitchcock or that fat fuck, Bruce Boudreau.

Look at what Trotz has done with the Islanders since he took over. Can’t underestimate what the right coach can do.
You watch the Rangers tonight and they looked like a pickup team. No cohesion, no feel for their teammates, no idea what they're trying to do.
can't disagree with that

I am not annoyed by that although the Islanders have more talent than they are given credit for. The real problem is lacking someone like Panarin on Barzal’s wing instead of Jordan Eberle.
outshot by almost 40% and crushed on the dots, only I didn't expect Shesterkin to give up 4 goals.
were they good goals? I see two PP goals.
That's really the only thing surprising about this game from the box score IMO. The Rangers have two top 9 forwards who can't legally drink and one who has only been of legal age for 4 months, a top 4 D who can't legally drink either and a goalie making his 13th NHL start.

No offense at all. The Isles are greater than the sum of their parts because of coaching and buy-in. That is what I love about them. You can add talent (once they clear some bad contracts).
The Rangers, in time, will have better parts. The challenge is getting them to be better than the sum of those parts.
This was about defensive lapses and Sheterkin just didn’t bail them out.
Somehow we downgraded from Staal
This was about defensive lapses and Sheterkin just didn’t bail them out.
Ehhh, maybe the Barzal one, but it was a great shot by him and he used DeAngelo as a screen.
I knew Jack Johnson stunk, but my god. He makes me actually want Staal back instead.
I didn't watch the game, but 4 - 0 isn't much different than I expected for game 1 with such a young Rangers team at key spots.
just maybe because it was 3 - 0 just over halfway through the first it deflated the fans (remotely obviously) it seems worse.
Was Johnson too? I was talking about Brett Howden, who continues to take a regular shift for reasons that are mysterious to everyone but David Quinn
Quote:
But I don’t think any of the goals given up were bad goals. But there were no amazing saves either. He stopped the ones he should.

The Barzal goal was not a defensive lapse. It was a one on three. It was a nice shot.
nowhere to go but up.

Right, but you asked if there were any bad goals.
The Rangers had few quality chances, and the ones they had seems to bounce over sticks. After the first 10 minutes it didn’t feel close.
All that said, I don’t expect to see the same thing on Saturday.
yeah - I didn't watch much of the game as the Rangers were sucking and I had other things to do, but they looked *completely* unprepared to play this game. Credit to the Isles for playing well, but even unforced the Rangers were making fundamental errors. Difficult to understand, frankly.

Im convinced that Howden has all of the Infinity Stones at this point but he and Quinn havent figured out that a hockey glove cannot double as the Infinity Gauntlet.
The are Rangers afterall...not Avengers.
I dont know what the Rangers were doing out there, but it wasnt hockey. Can we shoot the fucking puck for fucks saje?! Looked really bad.
It was less than a touchdown, what more do you want?
the bad news is they're all division games and you play those same teams 9 or 10 times.
I'm just glad we have hockey.
Exactly. The team looked completely unprepared to play a game that counted in the standings. Contrast that with the Isles who looked like they’re coached by a great one who had them practicing the past two weeks. I’m starting to long for the days when my main complaint would be AV’s addiction to Nick Holden. At least the rest of the operation wasn’t a mess.
I dont know what the Rangers were doing out there, but it wasnt hockey. Can we shoot the fucking puck for fucks saje?! Looked really bad.
I'm not sure where you're getting this from. Off the ice, Quinn comes off as extremely likable and easy to root for. I don't find him arrogant in the least. If you want arrogant, look at our two previous coaches (AV and Torts).

This is the 2nd time Quinn has shown up with his team woefully unprepared for a big game. He sucks. He is an arrogant, New England Prep School (came from one myself....shuttup) asshole who thinks he is afforded talent and only has to wrangle personalities.

I guess its from pressers and he seems to sound like he has it all figured out. I dunno. Prob got a little carried away because I expected so much more from the team last night.
Should have hired Laviolette, if for no other reason it would have pissed off a lot of Boston people having to root for the Rangers.
The Rangers lost. They looked really bad. They also have a lot of new pieces an young players. Was Quinn supposed to do something special to rise to the occasion of "the big game"??

That's always been the case. We were rebuilding and he was brought in to develop the young guys. I don't think anyone could've realistically seen Quinn as a guy who would lead them to the Stanley Cup.

Its not ao much it was a big game, or even losing to hated rival. They looked downright pathetic. Scored zero times. When the divisions were realigned the way they were, I figured we'd be fucked to make the playoffs. But I did not expect them to look as piss poor as they did.
Every MLB season, Yankee fans want the coach fired after the first week of play.
I have no idea where this team will shake out, but acting like the season is over and that Quinn has no shot to get through to the players because they looked bad Game 1 isn't really very smart.
It isn't too surprising that a young team with a G getting his first play as the leader might look bad, especially without a crowd, a truncated training camp, etc.
And it's not like the Islanders suck.

I think you might be reading a little too much into my reaction. However, dating back to the playoff bubble, the team has looked woefully unready to play. As far as Im concerned thats on the coach. I simply saw last night as continuation of the trend.
2) Georgiev will make the start tomorrow
3) DeAngelo may be a healthy scratch. He skated with the taxi squad, while Anthony Bitetto moved up to skate with Jack Johnson
Has to be a scapegoat.
The people who said Johnson would just be a bottom-pairing, sparely used dman should feel pretty stupid.
The Rangers have been terrible analyzing NHL dmen the past decade. Extending Girardi and Staal as they were declining, letting Stralman go, signing Johnson, etc. It's a huge blind spot.
Quote:
Brett Howden has been pure shit since he first entered the lineup and Quinn never holds him responsible for anything, but in a game where Jack Johnson was one of the worst defensemen to ever suit up as a Ranger, he makes an example of DeAngelo. Absurd.

Serious question, is Jack Johnson even a better defenseman than Brendan Smith at this point?

Jack Johnson was arguably the worst full-time defenseman last year

Well Smith DID play wing much of last year right? Lol.
I mean, at least Smith can be physical when he needs to be.
I expected Johnson would be bottom pair, maybe PK.
and it's been one game, so I'm not sure how solid each person is in their role.
His contract is low enough (basically league vet min) I'm not sure the consternation is warranted. yet.
Smith, even if better than Johnson (and that's a tallest midget contest), Smith's contract (and the trade) is/were terrible.

Hah yeah. Should've said, "go with the more experienced Russian"
whoa - just checking in - WTF!?!?!
From his Wikipedia:
"Born in Bulgaria, Georgiev started playing hockey in Russia, where his family moved shortly after he was born"
This divison is going to be a war. It’s not fair to the teams in the division, but it’ll be entertaining fuck.
These games have become lopsided wins in both directions lately. On the broadcast they mentioned something like 4 of the last 6 NYI/NYR games have been decided by four or more goals.
I think both fan bases saw each end of the spectrum for their team in the last two days. Honestly I feel about the Islanders right now exactly how I did on Wednesday.
I was disappointed Sorokin had to have that kind of debut. The first Buchnevich goal was soft, but making your highly anticipated NHL debut unplanned with 15 minutes notice is probably a little unsettling. Probably more unsettling when your sound defensive team makes uncharacteristic mistakes in front of you all night.
Smith and DiGiuseppe were also big factors for the Rangers last night, and while the Islanders didn’t have a ton of chances, Georgiev was steady back there. Zibanejad and Panarin looked like they played with another gear last night compared to Thursday. Trouba arguably played his best game as a Ranger and looked like the guy they traded for. It doesn’t get any easier for the Rangers though with NJ playing some very good hockey to start the year, and Pittsburgh is always dangerous. This is going to be a hell of a season. These all feel like playoff games!

Sorry, yes Bulgarian is correct.
- K'Andre is a dream skater. So smooth, covers a lot of ice
_ Lindgren, two games in, his face is already fucked up
