Asking around about SP asking prices, I’ve heard Corey Kluber is at $6M-$8M (plus incentives), James Paxton is around $12M and Tanaka’s is about $15M. Continue to hear the Yankees won’t go past the luxury tax so we’ll see how they address the rotation
-Dom Smith 2.55 arbitration reward
-Mets talking to Hand and Wilson per Heyman
-IFA's can officially sign today. The Mets are not expected to sign any of the top 50. IFA pool room they don't use is lost and does not roll over to 2022. 2022 IFA signing date will remain January 15
Nice! Wonder if they got him cheaper than the $10 million if they got him off waivers.
McWilliams likely opens in AAA. Obviously a huge spring changes things.
Awesome. Some concern with him declining, but he was still pretty good last year (over 1 WAR as a reliever in a shortened season).
Makes our pen better.
So far I’m a fan of the new ownership if for no other reason to see Dan excited and making daily Mets posts in January. I was worried we were going to lost him if Brodie kept trading the farm away in stupid deals.

Is it possible "that's so Mets" is becoming a positive thing?
Other than the volatility of relievers, what is the concern with giving Hand more than 2 years? I know you've mentioned this before with him. Is there a particular issue with him?

If completed, deal expected to be for two years.
I like the move, Hand fits like a glove!

I truly lost my interest in the Mets at the end. It became "reflex" to read about them etc but it wasn't much fun. I would never root for another team but I drifted toward just enjoying the league overall. So exciting to have that excitement back. I have zero doubt in this FO/ownership.

good read. Thanks. Interesting even with those issues, he still had a 2.05 ERA and .77 WHIP last year

Correction: Mets engaged on Hand and in discussions, but two other sources say my initial report is inaccurate and the two sides are not close to a deal at this time. Mets have been interested in Hand since Indians declined his option.

The #WhiteSox pick up a couple of outfielders: Sign Cuban outfielder Yoelqui Cespedes, the half brother of Yoenis Cespedes, to a $2.05 million deal, per
@JesseSanchezMLB
. They also sign former #Phillies outfielder Nick Williams to a minor-league deal worth $900K if in big leagues

Well, it was an exciting two minutes.
Anyway, Mets desperately need one more starter before the season. There’s just not enough to go all year with SP’s coming off 80inning seasons, IMO.
Obviously want Bauer, but kluber is an interesting choice as well.
Anyone with general thoughts on innings limits this year? Ar SP’s gonna be targeted for their usual load after 30% of normal last year? Can’t see that there isn’t some attempt to aim for 160 rather than 200.
Adding May and Hand (and hopefully getting Wilson back) is a great hedge.
Still need a starter tho.
Of course Cohen could say F’it and target springer and Bauer and just become a 105 win projected team.
well done Rosenthal.
Mets have as much high-end talent as anyone at the moment, but we don’t want to have huge gaping holes that could threaten to sink the whole operation.
Hard to say given the fact it was clear he wanted to stay with NYY
There's talent to be found in this market.
There's talent to be found in this market.
It's not the first one. The period was moved BACK 6 months so agreements were made, just not announced. The pool money not spent as you said, is simply lost. This seems to be a Brodie/Wilpon final gift.

Check out Zack Wheeler's 2017 (first year back from 2 year TJS) numbers compared to 2018.
Walker threw 14 innings in the 2 full seasons prior to this past season. Making 11 starts and posting semi-comparable numbers to his prior best (2017) is what's meaningful. And honestly his statcast #'s in 2017 weren't particularly better then either.
no 2 players have the same talent or respond the same way to injury, but it's possible Walker has upside beyond what he showed this past year if his body continues responding as it gets further from the surgery. Some guys come back from TJS right away and others need more time. He's still only 28 so I think he's a worthy dice roll depending on cost.
He's only 3 years older than Peterson and was pretty much better across the board last year. He'd be a nice fit to bring to ST to compete with both Matz/Peterson and would have at least even up odds to beat out both.

Part of it is likely mental as he completely unravels whenever something goes against him. But he also did a far better job keeping the ball in the park earlier in his career. First 183 innings pitched (6+22) he allowed less than 1 HR/9, since that time he's closer to 1.5./9. His FB was above average by pitch value his first 2 seasons, it's been below the last 4.
He posted his best K rate (8.44 k/9). That's not nothing and that's a fairly solid number.
Random meaningless fact - it's actually the exact same K-rate Wheeler posted in 2017 (though that wasn't Wheeler's best to that point).
Again, not trying to beat this horse to death or anything, but that K rate and his decent walk rates tell me his stuff isn't terrible and he has decent control. Add in a little upside due to his age and more time removed from the injuries and of all the options out there he's just more appealing if they can get him on a creative deal of some kind. He is a full year younger than Matz.
Mets have more competition, NL has some pretty top notch teams in the Dodgers, Padres, and Braves, but I think they will be right on that level if DeGrom and Syndegard are healthy come October.
They should really pay Trevor Bauer over George Springer if both are not an option.
Quote:
Walker's stats nearly across the board were worse in 2020 than even his career Marks. Other than getting very lucky (BABIP) what could you point to? Higher BB/9, higher HR/9, worse GB% than his career marks. I know you keep coming back to Wheeler for some reason but Walker has ONE season in his career where he was league average. What in the numbers suggests he should be a target? His age is the only positive he has against the rest of the field.

Eric.. he posted 8.44... career 8.17, given the shortened season... that's not exactly something that gives much hope. I have a very hard time giving credit for upside for players who have both "okay" stuff and have never shown themselves to flash this upside. In his "best" season his FIP was still mediocre (4.04). If that's his "upside" vs. his floor.. not particularly good.
He's just at the top of the FA SP options that will presumably be taking low risk deals because he's got youth and I see some potential upside. Sort of like Wacha last year.

Multiple sources maintain that the Mets are still a ways off from a deal with lefty reliever Brad Hand. Clearly there is mutual interest here, and the Mets could use some left-handed balance for their bullpen. But we will have to wait to see what unfolds.

Sources: The #BlueJays remain in contact with multiple top free agents -- Trevor Bauer, J.T. Realmuto, and George Springer -- after failing to lure DJ LeMahieu from the #Yankees.

Not advocating they do this but would be fun to watch the Mets and Yankees get in bidding war on Kluber and this time Mets win.
