NFT: Neighbor Horror Stories

Route 9 : 1/15/2021 11:21 pm
I've been staying at my parents old house across town for the week and the past three nights the neighbors have been yelling at each other non-Stop. Curse words and threats and all of that fun stuff.

I keep hearing "you're done! Your whole family is done!"

Well, the horror stroy here is they won't actually wipe each other out and will continue yelling. Brings me back to the late 80s/early 90s when I didn't have central air in the house and you could hear all of the nonsense being shouted.

Got any DREADFUL stories of your own? Turf wars and fights on holidays? Entertainment.

But about 9 years ago, two houses down and one across from my home, a guy started burning crap in his fire pit.

It was springtime, my windows were open and the smoke started to infiltrate my home.

I got pissed off because my young son, about 2 years old at the time, was suffering from severe asthma and had just got home from a four-day stint in the hospital.

I walked over to the house and saw a tall thin guy standing next to the fire pit. I called out "excuse me" and the guy answer "what the fuck do you want Lerch?" (I'm 6'8" inches tall).

I calmly replied that my 2 year-old has severe asthma, just got home from the hospital, and that the smoke from the fire pit is getting into my home and would you please put the fire out.

He says, go fuck yourself Lerch.

With that, I walk away and call the cops. I tell the dispatcher what is going on and she says that the cops cannot do anything and that I have to file a complaint with the local court.

I tell the dispatcher that I am not going to wait a month to get this guy into court while my son has a reaction to the smoke that is going to land him back in the hospital and ask her if she really wants me to handle this myself.

The dispatcher puts the Sargent on and he says that someone will be right over.

The cops come, talk to the guy, tell him that he cannot burn anything within the town limits and that he has to put the firs out.

This has occurred five times since, and each time I call the cops. Sometimes they come, and sometimes the fire department sends someone. Each time they come to my home and tell me that they spoke to the guy and instruct me to call back if there are any further problems.

As it turns out, the guy is my son's best friend's uncle. The kid tells me that his uncle is a really nice guy but has a bad drinking problem. His drinking problem almost got him lumped up.

It's not a true horror story, but it is something that just pissed me off.
I've been blessed with great neighbors in my 21 years in this house

even new people coming in have been as nice as the originals.

Growing up in Lake Grove on Long Island was another matter. We lived next to the neighborhood pain in the ass. You know the type. Mother always interfering in the kids games. You're one 1/2 inch over my property line. Your fence is too high, having to stop the job until the town came and told them they were wrong. UGH
I dont really have one but a close friend did.

At the time he lived in a twin and the guy on the other side was a schizophrenic. Long periods of nothing then he'd harass the hell out of them for a few weeks. Strange threats, banging on the shared wall in his and his kids bedroom at 3AM, the guy even set up cameras (on his own property) aimed into my friends yard and back porch. Cops were heavily involved and he was 302'd (committed to a psych ward against his will) on several occasions but this was pretty consistent for about 2 years. He was in his 60s, pretty frail, and had legitimate psychiatric issues but I still think it would be hard to restrain yourself. Eventually they moved, which was always the plan to begin with, but that man was a nigjtmare.

is being terrorized by a pack of coyotes.

they're coming out earlier and earlier and getting more and more aggressive.

We'd see a random coyote from time to time over the years, but now they're like a roving gang.

also there has been multiple bobcat sightings recently.

I think what we're facing is like one of those movies/books where the animals rise up and get their revenge

..was a nice guy but had quadruple bypass surgery. And was put on medication. And said medication was causing him to have suicidal fits. Twice he tried to kill himself. My sister is on the local volunteer EMT squad and he had cut himself up with a knife in the bathtub and blood was everywhere. Thankfully not long after they were evicted for being months behind on rent. I was relieved because I was getting paranoid he'd burn the whole apartment building down or something.
This was 12 years ago. I recently asked someone on Facebook who knows him and his wife how he's been and I guess he's ok now. They moved to another part of town.

20 years ago or so. My kids were small. We're walking out to the car to say our goodnight and like 5 doors away there's 20 people outside this house screaming, yelling, smashing bottles. Some are trying to break up different fights, some are pleading to stop, some are crying.
I ask my mom if she wants me to call the cops and without missing a beat she says,"That's just the Murphys."

My kids thought it was epic and we still bring it up. The Murphys are legends in my house.

Didn't you have this problem 5 or so years ago?

Maybe with less traffic the coyotes are out because of COVID in the beginning they were gaining confidence and moving to the neighborhoods?

A couple years back, I lived in an apartment with my family
MadPlaid : 1/16/2021 11:59 am : link
where our downstairs neighbor was an angry noise sensitive jerk. We would walk in our apartment, and if we didn't do so lightly, she would bang her ceiling, our floor, with I assume a broom. Bang bang bang. She'd bang on her ceiling even when we were moving about and not wearing shoes. Didn't matter how careful we were, she'd bang away. She left an unpleasant note under our door once, and I attempted to discuss it with her. She wouldn't face me. Just a miserable person.

We had enough of her harassment, and too high rent, and chose to move to a new location. About a week before we moved, things had been very quiet down stairs. Hadn't heard a peep from the crappy neighbor for some time. While I was fantasizing that the new tenants would be Clog Dancers or family of elephants, we started to notice a very unpleasant odor in the building. We thought a mouse had died in the walls or something. Ultimately I found out from the super that our annoying neighbor had died and had begun decaying and attracting a swarm of flies. Yuck. I didn't ask, but I was tempted to inquire if when he found her body if she was holding a broom. Very sad ending really. She had no immediate family, other than an uncle who lived outside the city. Kind of explains her miserable disposition.

we'd see an occasional coyote. My neighbor ran over to my house maybe 7 or 8 years ago in tears with a wiffle ball bat in her hand and said she saw a wolf stalking her golden doodle. I thought well thank god you have a wiffle ball bat.

I just caught the "wolf" running away and it was a coyote. but the sightings were rare.

We have a lot of foxes, turkeys, raccoons, rabbits, fisher cats, deer, etc - so maybe that has attracted larger prey. Not sure.

But now it's nearly every single night with the packs of coyotes and not sure if you've ever heard coyotes "yelping" but it's pretty unique sound. Plus the frequent bobcat sightings. Something is going on.

I don't live in an area with a lot of new construction or development (typical non-elastic New England), it's definitely suburban, but not really rural.

So, I'm not sure what causes it other than pheromones maybe like in the James Patterson book Zoo.

Oh boy, so I had the double neighbor asshole problems
montanagiant : 1/16/2021 12:53 pm : link
The one next to us and the one kitty-corner to our backyard.

The one next door was an older lady who inherited the house when she was 70 years old from an older couple that were absolutely great. The other house was a childless couple who moved there to work in management at a casino nearby. These two were backyard neighbors and the couple would get Witch Hazel all fired up over the most absurd stuff.

I had 2 kids in high school at the time (12th and 10th grade) and our house has a big great room connected to a game room that was the hangout for my kids and all their friends. When these two first moved into their respective houses our backyard was not yet fenced in and it would be a regular thing on weekends when the asshole couple would call the cops to complain that my kids were too loud while using the firepit prior to 11 PM. Was it louder than not using the pit? Sure, but nothing outrageous because I myself didn't want them loud and we had a rule that at 9 music gets turned down to conversation level. Kids always honored that and were conscientious about watching the noise. Cops would tell them we were in our rights to have people over and that the noise rules don't go into effect until 11:00. Yet he would get the lady all fired up so he had 2 complaints. We finally had to go to the City Council to get addressed once and for all.

Had the older lady come out and tell my kids the parking on the street in front of her house was hers only. she actually filed a complaint to the CC when I told my kids to be polite but ignore her.

The older lady had her son snowplow her driveway and dump the snow on her property but at the base of the street as far over to our driveway as possible. Blocked any way to see pulling out of our driveway from that direction.

Put a 6' vinyl fence in around our whole backyard for our dogs, asshole went to the older lady and both filed a complaint with the CC that we refused to take care of the yard next to the fence that was on her side next to the fence. They got laughed out of the meeting over that one.

When the asshole moved in he built an oversized garage right at the property boundaries that overhung our shared neighbor's yard that was next to both of us. The normal neighbor had just had extensive landscaping done and had built a natural berm on their property st back a few yards with pine trees planted to stop any erosion and water drainage flow in towards their house. Asshole decided to build up the foundation for the garage to a bit higher than the berm just because he's an asshole.

Mrs. Asshole got caught by my wife spraying Round-up on nice neighbors now 2-year-old pine trees that separated their yards by my wife. My wife asked her what she was doing and she ran back inside and then came out later that day when she thought no one was around and sprayed water on the same areas hoping to wash it off. That one cost Asshole a bit of money. To this day all, it accomplished was that the side that faced them is dead, not the rest of the tree.

Asshole had 2 Basset Hounds which barked and howled quite a bit but I have 2 dogs also and they bark so no big deal. He actually called my wife (Would not talk to me because after the BS complaints about the kids I told him to kiss my ample ass) to say that he was going to file a complaint that my dogs were harassing his dogs.

Busted Asshole walking his two dogs while I was walking mine a block away and behind him. as he went by our front yard he veered in towards our yard and let out the retractable lease on the 2 dogs and I watched as the took shits in our yard and he just kept going. I yelled out "I know you're going to be back to pick that up" he freaked out and hurried away. I gave him one day to pick it up, he never did, so I then walked our Puggle (that would shit in the middle of a busy street if he wanted to) right over to his driveway where he dropped a nice big steaming one.

Because Asshole built his garage so close to the yard boundaries we had a couple of trees that overhung in his yard. We had severe wind one day and the top of the tree got knocked off and hung in some telephone lines above his garage. I got an Arbor service to come out and trim back all the trees that overhung and to get the top of that tree off the lines. Asshole went to the City Council to demand I cut down all the trees near his garage. CC said they can't do that and at that point, I decided to get a survey done of the yard line. Turns out the asshole was 2.5' over into my yard. It was at this point that when he realized I could demand he demolish that garage he decided to sell his house.

Here's the "it's a small world" moment: I was doing some consulting work for a company in Des Moines, Iowa. The owner of the company and I became good friends and while down there doing some work he mentioned that he had a neighbor of his moving up to where I live (which is a smaller town). He told me his name and then actually said: "But he's a real asshole", yeah it was this putz of a neighbor.

Growing up, our next door neighbor was pretty intolerable. A racist who was constantly complaining about the kids who were part of the 2 Jewish families on the street. He was meticulous about his lawn and anytime we’d play baseball in the street and the ball would end up on his lawn, he’d scream at us to get off his property. Though I have no proof of it, thinking back on it now I’m convinced the guy was a severe alcoholic. Really sad.

to live in a throw-back neighborhood.

so, 80's-like. kids out at the crack of dawn, playing, running around, just having fun doing kids things until night time.

People often talk about kids today being online/plugged in all the time, and it's obviously true, but my neighborhood might be an anomaly.

the only issues we had were dogshit related. I think I even started a post about it a few years ago when it happened. One neighbors dog shit on another ones yard and a 3rd neighbor saw it and narced. so there was some brief dogshit wars. the one neighbor took the shit off his yard with a shovel, walked over to the other guys house and flung it in the guys driveway. the other guy claimed his dog didn't shit there and confronted the other neighbor and then the other neighbor said he saw it happen and the other guy kind of apologized but still wasn't happy he had shit in his driveway (but it was from his own dog, so there's that).

I watched the whole thing unfold (from the initial shit and I knew if the home owner found out how he'd react), but I stayed out of it.

that was short lived and the only drama in the neighborhood in 10 years other than the revenge of the wild life going on now.

actually one other thing, I had someone narc on me for using my irrigation system outside of approved hours and I got a warning from the water company. I think I know who it was, but no confirmation.

Yeah, his original proposal for a license for the Garage had it 3' closer to his house and was smaller. He claimed his surveyor was off but could not provide the person's name who did it.

I've got at least 5 more stories about this idiot, like him spending all day watching the guys putting in my fence and measuring how close to his garage it was. It got to the point where the construction co. owner told him to fuck off and leave them alone

He was meticulous about his lawn and anytime we’d play baseball in the street and the ball would end up on his lawn, he’d scream at us to get off his property. Though I have no proof of it, thinking back on it now I’m convinced the guy was a severe alcoholic. Really sad.

Ha. The town racist is obsessed with his lawn, too. I think someone finally punched him not too long ago.

Would've enjoyed seeing that event transpire.

Ha!! we have both. One racist family with a Confederate flag live in a shit hole and another one's lawn and small house are absolutely pristine to the point where they will walk around picking up stray leafs

Lived in an apartment complex in Portland, ME circa '02. Dude in the next appointment would throw massive ragers every Wednesday night/wee hours of Thursday morning with somewhere between 15-25 people. And it would get loud AF. I'm up for a party as much as the next person, but not in the middle of the work week.

My horror story, she moved out!

If she wearing a thong technically she wasn't nude

our neighborhood turkeys aren't aggressive, but they are fearless, they'll walk right across our lawns, the street, etc. doesn't matter, like they have no predators who eat them - maybe another reason for so many coyotes.
Have had bad luck with two neighbors at the same property

We live in a townhouse. When we moved in, there was a single woman living alone. At first we got along. Then problems started cropping up. I think it may have been when she had a boyfriend living with her, and he and I were shoveling leaves at the same time, and he was complaining about her. They broke up a month or two later, and then she turned nasty.

I accidentally dented her car when the wind yanked the door fully open one day. We asked her to get an estimate and we've pay for it. She refused and insisted we pay a certain dollar value for the repairs. We did, and she never got the dent fixed (by comparison, we had another neighbor accidentally back into our SUV and caused a small dent; he offered to pay for it, but we never got it fixed and never asked for anything).

Garbage would show up sometimes on people's lawns. She decided that we must have done it, so she would collect it all and drop it on our front step, even mail that had other people's addresses on it. That continued until my wife had to say something to her, in front of other neighbors.

That continued until she passed from cancer. And if you think I should have been nice to her because of that, I was. She went away another time, and I drove her and picked her up from the airport. Years later, once she got sick, she had to go to the hospital. She didn't have any family nearby, so I drove her to the hospital, sat with her in the waiting room for two hours until she was admitted, and picked her up two weeks later when she was released. I found out she passed the day of her church service. I called up her workplace to let them know that she had passed, and then took off work for an hour or two to attend her service (which was very empty).

So anyway, she passed. Her family finally shows up and cleaned her house out. The house is on the market for a few months, before a single guy moved it. He's very unfriendly. I don't think he's ever said a word to me. He's got a huge dog that would probably kill someone if it got loose. The few times I've seen him taking it for a walk, it barks and tries to lunge at anyone it sees. And when he takes it for a walk, he never picks up the shit. I don't know what he feeds it, because it pisses out pure gasoline. He used to let it go on my front lawn, and the grass would start dying anywhere it went. He would let it shit on my lawn, too, until I started relocating the shit onto his front step.
I live in a fairly residential area of southern Maine

but far enough north to be tucked deep enough into the woods where we have coyotes in the fields and eagles in the trees.

I have a neighbor across the street and one next door.

Lived here over 5 years.

The neighbors across the street I wave at when we make eye contact. That has been maybe once or twice a year.

The only time I talked to the husband was when he came to offer to help me push my mom out of a snowbank. I said "Thank you, very much." "You're welcome." he said while waving to my mother.

3 winters later he helped my wife shovel our driveway while I was at work.

I talked to the wife once about a stray dog running around.

The neighbors next door I haven't even had a word with or seen in 5 years.
Their nephews saved my ass during a 24+ inch blizzard, however, plowing my way down the street after freeing my car for just 20 bucks.

Neighbors helping neighbors but living our own lives. I wouldn't mind the occasional chatter though at the mailbox or on a summer day.

Maine. Love hearing the coyotes. Haven't been a pest since I don't have chickens and cats are indoors.

Fisher cats are terrifying and make demonic noises. Hell Cats.

I see the turkey and deer and moose.

Reading your neighbor stories I am thankful for what I have.

I may have attended some or many of those parties....

My apologies. ;-)

OG

Were they the originators of the phrase "Murphy's Law"?

where our downstairs neighbor was an angry noise sensitive jerk.

Ok, I laughed.

confined to her condo in Connecticut. Lovely home, but they lived on the ground floor, and the upstairs neighbors were routinely inconsiderate and loud, often playing music late at night, 2-3:00 in the morning. My uncle politely asked numerous time if they would refrain in consideration of my Aunt’s illness, but no change. So she had to be hospitalized over the weekend for some kind of procedure, and before leaving my uncle took his stereo speakers and put them on his bookshelf’s foot from the ceiling facing up at the neighbors’ floor . He put a recording of bagpipe music on his record player and set it to repeat. Top volume. And then left for three days.

friends' neighbor had an issue with his family. I don't even remember what started it but being teenage assholes, we decided to endlessly fuck with them. Bags of poop, mailbox explosions, grass killing with chemicals, etc. I don't know how we didn't get arrested.
