Wasn't Springer looking for $150m+? Is is that much of a buyer market that the Mets could get him that far off his asking price?
a couple teams willing to hand out 100+ deals, even the rumored PHI offer to JT was only "just north of 100" for 5 years. I think that the middle tier guys are still getting about what was expected, but the high end guys probably wont. DJ getting 6/90 was def low. Im not sure any of the big 3 remaining guys get 150, just not sure there are enough teams to hand out 100+ mill deals
Last week on the MLB Chat we had a discussion about the Spring Training games coming up. It sounded like fan attendance would be severely limited, and maybe even have a 'pod' restriction. They tried that 'pods' thing around Charleston for concerts this past summer.....it didn't work out too well.
I was thinking about taking a ride down to St Lucie for a few days in March -- it's only about 5 or 6 hours from CHS. But the idea of restricted seating doesn't thrill me.
What's the latest word on ST games and Fan Attendance ??
I believe the rumors with Springer were that his ask was 30m aav
I am fortunate to live about 5 minutes from Met's Spring Training site-now called Cover Park, Last local update is limited attendance for games and no public access for workouts.

George Springer’s free agent decision could come this week, multiple industry sources believe. The #BlueJays and #Mets are the two frontrunners as of today.
@MLBNetwork
It's likely going to come down to what he values. Flat out most $$ or geography (near CT, wife from Saugerties). That being said, the Jays likely need to up their reported offer to give him a real "conflict" between the 2. I think he's a Met unless that happens.
I guess Springer needs to decide which is more important to him...playing near family ?? Or playing in Toronto / Buffalo.
Would any contract take into account the Exchange Rate, if they do actually play in Canada ??
I don't honestly know the answer to your last question but I've never heard it mentioned before so I assume they are paid based on the american dollar but could easily be wrong
"Players have to pay income taxes in both the US and Canada for money earned in Canada. Brett Lawrie doesn't apply to the last statement ;) Internet money. They pay them in American Dollars, which are bought ahead of time to avoid market fluctuations whenever the Dollar dips."
@Mets
starting CF opening day will be George Springer. The starting LF will be Brandon Nimmo and Dom will be at 1b. Pete at DH. The DH shall be back. #Mets
I look forward to complaining Alonso is playing too much 1B. The Mets aren't going to make him a full-time DH, I suspect a 60/40ish split
I would not mind getting a quality RH defender at 3B so against difficult lefties you can DH J.D. Davis or play him at 1B while getting better defense at 3B

That would be beautiful if true and I really hope signing Springer doesn't preclude us from resigning Conforto & Thor

This is merely my educated opinion. NL teams are suddenly in on Cruz/Ozuna. Mets signed Martinez, Nightengale said there have been negotiations about the DH. I think teams know it will be back but aren’t supposed to tip their hands.

I think Guillorme is “that guy” as of now
I question whether Guillorme has the arm to play 3B even if he can get to more balls defensively. Not to mention the bat is very BABIP dependent unless he has actually learned some power. He makes Rey Ordoñez look like a power hitter.
where they decide to play McNeil is going to be interesting
2b is probably most likely but 3b would be the ideal since that's harder to find. If he can play 3b there are a few interesting FA's who could make sense or they can roll with Guillorme and go with elite defense up the middle.
Also Guillorme's offense may not be great but it's an insult to compare him Ordonez. Ordonez never had a single season rc over 62 (54 for his career!!!). As a Met his single season highest BA was .258, highest OBP was .319, highest slg% was .336. Guillorme's numbers over his 200 MLB ab's are better across the board. This past year he was obviously above league average overall but he wasn't far off last year either (87 rc).
If they still had Kelenic I wonder if they'd still be going for Springer. I'd guess yes and the move would be to replace 1 of Nimmo/Conforto with Kelenic as he phases in over the next year or two.

Depends on the Mets ETA and position for Kelenic if he's expected to a) stick in CF and b) start in the majors on opening day.
those two I think would dictate their pursuit of Springer.
or at least going to one over the other based off need for defense at times, Guillorme should play 2nd with McNeil at third. Up the middle defense would likely be stellar.
McNeil can head over to 2nd on days we want JD in at at 3B.
seems like the Yankees are conspiculously on the sidelines too (making a run at Colas?)
Anyway here are the Mets signings for over $300,000 so far, none in the top 30 player rankings as DMM has pointed out.
but it's also not like the whole pool was punted as I felt like many comments indicated. Just with the > 300k signings it seems they've spent over $2M so worst case they've squandered around $3M but will wait until it's all said and done.
and calling it a day. Ill add more pieces but they can be late offseason adds for cheap. There are a ton of interesting relievers and SP #5 types who's prices will fall I think.
With this strategy we might be close to the LT. An extra reliever can always be picked up mid season too but it's much more difficult to add a "Springer" once the season starts.
Was a top 3 FA for “everyone”. He’s an very good MLB regular with huge post season success. I won’t argue against Bauer or Realmuto but Springer would be a monster addition. No RP and no SP outside of Bauer would come close

Yankees gave Hans Montero 1.7 million, 23rd on BA's list. They gave up 1 million because of the penalty for signing Cole and Jesus Galiz reportedly had a deal for 1+ million but ended up choosing LAD. They are the heavy favorites to sign 2022 #1 prospecr Roderick Arias.
with as far back as these IFA's agree isn't this likely a BVW (omar?)
failure from the past couple years? Everyone has a cap of use it or lose it $ so I can't imagine this was the Wilpons being cheap because it's such a small chunk of the overall budget, but I'd never put anything past them.

This is a "failure" of the Wilpons/Brodie. Not Cohen/Sandy. Verbals are made as long 12-24 months out. This year was unusually "weak". Even in recent years they signed a few bigger IFA's each season.

Wasn't international FA's supposed to be Omar's thing? Could he have tried some different strategy?
was only in a part-time advisory role this time around. Rafael Perez and Luis Marquez did the heavy lifting. Considering
Rosario, Gimenez, Mauricio, Alvarez are easily 4 of the top talents they have produced over the last few seasons a "shift" simply because of some philosophical decision seems... dubious at best. I mean teams like Cleveland, LAD, and Houston (as well as the Yankees) are in on big names every year... and it's worked out.. just as it has for the Mets. Even down to Ali Sanchez, a big leaguer at 690K
should be a draft, not who can be the first MLB team to promise a 12 year old Dominican or Venezuealan kid $2M and a mansion for his parents when he turns 16 if he keeps the other teams at bay.
