I was reading an article in the Athletic by Jim Bowden about underrated prospects for each of the 30 MLB teams. He had him above average in hitting, fielding, and base running. He said that, “he can hit high velocity, breaking balls and off-speed pitches as well as any teenager in the minor leagues.” I hadn’t heard much about Volpe but Bowden was quite optimistic about Volpe’s future. Have you heard similar things?
But unless that hit tool is plus or close to it, he’s going to have to hit for more power if he’s going to approach elite prospect status. I like him, but they’ve had a number of these “sum of their parts”/high makeup shortstops in Culver, Wilkerman Garcia, and a few more and to date the only one to see the bigs has been Tyler Wade, who has a carrying tool (speed).
It's imperative all the young hurlers take a step forward this year.
He looks slimmer in this video, which is good, at one point he looked like a fire hydrant with legs.
