Wow. 19 years. I remember this game as if it were yesterday. We had to carry cows up hills back in those days.
The 2001 AFC Divisional Playoff game between the New England Patriots and the Oakland Raiders, also known as the Tuck Rule Game or the Snow Bowl, or sometimes referred to as Snow Bowl 2, took place on January 19, 2002, at Foxboro Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, the former home stadium of the Patriots.
Wow... does not seem like 19 years ago... at all
At the time, the rule was enforced correctly. The rule was that even if the QB began the throwing motion, if they stopped and tried to re-tuck the ball, it was considered an incomplete pass. The rule has been changed, and it sucked, but that was actually one the refs got right - based on the rule
You mean Charles? The call was correct, no matter how dumb the rule was. In the moment, it looked like a clear fumble & I too was confused over what was being reviewed. But the officials got it right.
Winning by the skin of your teeth is still winning...
Passer Tucks Ball. If the player loses possession of the ball during an attempt to bring it back toward his body, or if the player loses possession after he has tucked the ball into his body, it is a fumble.
But I just dont understand the logic behind it. Somehow with a pump fake and full "re-tucking" of the ball your arm is still deemed to be going forward?
People may have wanted the Raiders to advance, but how can a rule correctly applied be considered a reason they should have won??
It's like saying the Browns deserved to advance last weekend. why did the refs bring the ridiculous rule to bear about the fumble out of the end zone?
There's a better pic, but you can see his left hand on the ball here:
Couldn't believe he made it.
Couldn't believe he made it.
Excellent point. That's what gets lost in the sauce about that game. How high is the crossbar? 10'? That kick went - maybe - 12 feet in the air for the entire kick...

But, as another poster said, it certainly looked like Tom got both hands back on the ball. So at what point would he need to have lost it for it to be considered a fumble? He would need to have fully stopped his hands moving at all?
Tom Brady is the luckiest son of a bitch who's ever lived.
