somebody this weekend said "Watch, they'll give the female official a spot in the Super Bowl". They were right!!
She is terrible. She should have been demoted for the errant fumble call alone.
1) She awarded a team the ball without evidence
2) The league was too afraid that she would look bad that they never reviewed the play properly
3) It happened in a game where the Browns were down 4 points in the 4th quarter and the turnover led to a Skins TD
She altered a game with a bad call that wasn't due to a simple mistake - but from gross incompetence
And here's the saddest recounting of events you'll ever see.
But don't worry, the NFL can explain.
"The on-field ruling was a fumble, recovered by Washington," the league said, via Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot. "It was confirmed as a fumble in instant replay without the need to stop the game. As to the recovery, several different angles were looked at, but with nothing definitive shown, there was no need to stop the game because the on-field ruling that awarded possession to Washington would have stood."
Not that it matters now, but Johnson thought he had the ball, probably because, you know, he had the ball.
They supposedly review all turnovers, but that "review" never paused the game and the league said that there was no possible reversal. But they never stopped the game like normal to do the review!!

Duke Johnson fumbled. Duke Johnson recovered his own fumble. Washington was awarded the ball.
Despite the NFL’s attempt to explain away what happened with 9:40 left in Sunday’s Browns-Redskins game, video evidence points rather obviously to the contrary.
Johnson definitely fumbles—there’s no disputing that. But keep your eyes on the left side of the screen about eight seconds into the above video. You’ll see Johnson holding the football aloft after recovering it and standing up. Meanwhile, line judge Sarah Thomas races in as several other players wrestle for possession of a ball that’s not there. She points Washington’s direction, ruling the play a turnover.
I'm all for elevating women, but competence should come first.
But thats the thing with this widely adopted, modern mantra....competence is NOT prioritized. Only appealing to sensitivities and posturing. Imagine if the outcome of a project you were working on was determined by someone who is not qualified yo do so and then that decision is defended by the powers that be for fear of poor optics.
It is the world we live in now and unfortunately, there is no adapting to it. We have to skip right to not only acceptance, but also applaud and cheer for that way of thinking going forward.

officiating because they have old men out there, and then they elevate an obviously poor official because of the optics. Can't we just emulate the officiating college does? They are so much better on every level and don't miss nearly as much stuff on the field, and I'm having trouble coming up with any other reason than age.
College officials are noticeably younger. Brain processing speed and mental sensory input starts to decline around late 40s and early 50s. These guys just can't keep up with what they are seeing. On the flip side of that I'm not sure women can keep up eitehr considering their spatial awareness is much worse but I'm not positive on that.
50 and 60 somethings simply can't keep up as well as younger officials, either physically or mentally.
I still like the idea I laid out here a few years ago - the NFL should target young guys who are smart and passionate about the game but on the fringes of rosters because they lack the talent and physical ability to establish themselves. Recruit young guys in their 20s and put them in a training program to become officials in a year or two. Get the average age of NFL officials down into the 30s.
RE: I've long complained about the age of officials

Insane the NFL with its huge financial empire doesn’t have a top flight program for training and retaining full-time employees.

How funny would it be if Evan Engram got cut, became an official and cjased down the play from behind with his hat flying off like DK Metcalf did to Budda Baker?
Then we have scrubs back in the league. Theres your hole Greg. 😉
Well we soon will have a transgender assistant secretary of health
who looks like they are closer to a coronary than anything that has to do with health. So this is really not shocking. Appeasing and optics is way more important than choosing the most qualified person in 2021.
Should be instant grounds for not being granted the privilege of officiating the Super Bowl. And you can bet there will be segments dedicated to how this is warranted and a huge step forward for the league.

Something that happened four years ago (I believe) should not render her permanently ineligible to work the Super Bowl. That being said, I think there are better officials at her position. For example, the DJ who did a great job with the spot at the end of the CLE/KC game has been one of the top at his position the last few years, has also never worked the Super Bowl. He got the alternate DJ spot (due to COVID they are having an alternate at each position).
the reason I go back to that botched call continually is that it was completely avoidable AND reversable.
There should NEVER be an instance where a team is awarded the ball when it cannot be established they had possession, but more importantly, an official should NEVER signal possession without knowing where the ball is. That isn't just a mistake - it is sheer incompetence.
She's also been very poor since then.
What still bothers me about that fumble call is that all turnovers are supposedly reviewed, but I was watching that game in real time and the change of possession happened without a stoppage in play and they did not break for a commercial, so the play started right up again. The officials had to instruct the Browns offense that they no longer had possession.
It is like they intentionally didn't review that play because it would have shown her call to be completely wrong.
Maybe because she's a female, but how many side judges
do you notice actually make bad/missed calls? She may be a victim of sticking out in that sense, but it just seems like she's the only side judge I notice just consistently being poor.

She'll be protected by any form of criticism no matter how shitty of a job she does.
We're in for a real treat these next couple of years.

You gotta give some of these refs credit for keeping up with young pro athletes.
Has she ever jumped in a pile when there's a fumble to see who has the ball?
