bummer for the Mets. Hope they can pivot to someone like Cain. Cain/Hand/Kike would be a great finish to the offseason.

#BlueJays deal with FA George Springer complete at around 5/$135 million dollar range, Ross Atkins gets the man he’s been after all offseason
Former #Mets GM Jaret Porter scandal had a very large impact on the decision
Not gonna lie. But there are upsides. Makes it easier to deal with Conforto and Thor. Also pretty much guarantees not being a luxury tax member before the new CBA. And who knows what the tax ramifications will be after this whole new CBA is done.
Work stoppage next year seems a real possibility given how mlbpa and owners never start the process early.

Springer deal with #Bluejays not finalized but optimism strong. Thought #Mets would get him when offseason began, but turned to Lindor and without sure DH in NL how do you play Springer/Nimmo/Conforto/Smith/Alonso at same time. Tor has been big-game hunting. This would be huge.
Springer and/or his agent told the author of that tweet above that the fact a GM the Mets had for 2 months sent dick picks to a reporter 4 years ago, influenced him to sign with the Blue Jays?
Do I understand that right?
Significantly influenced the decision?
Good riddance.
I'd have more respect if he made something up and said he wanted to win and thought they had a better team, he liked Toronto better than NYC or the always popular "I wanted to be closer to family", but that is silly IMO.

For whatever it's worth, it seems likely now that the leaks yesterday about Springer's preference to play close to home (CT) were probably intentional to draw the mets back in knowing things were getting close with Toronto. I suppose that means the NYM just stuck to their guns.
Here's the latest from Rosenthal - seems like he's going to be a Blue Jay unless he decides at the last minute to take less to go to NY or NYM have a last minute decision to spend more.

One source estimates Blue Jays stand 70 percent chance of getting Springer, based on momentum of negotiations. @Joelsherman1 reporting deal is close. @_bkuh_ reported earlier that agreement is in place. Also on it: @jonmorosi, @JonHeyman.

I call BS on his decision having anything to do with Porter. No chance that determined where he's deciding to spend the last of his prime years and live for the next 5 years.

As long as this winter has been for Toronto, in the end the Blue Jays land their top target. A huge get for a team that is on the rise and going to be a threat to the Yankees and Rays in the AL East. @_bkuh_ first said Springer was headed to the Jays.
looks like Toronto caved on the 6th year - good deal for Springer
Ken Rosenthal
@Ken_Rosenthal
Source confirms: Blue Jays in agreement with free-agent outfielder George Springer. Per @JonHeyman, six years, $150M. Pending physical.
Get Stearns on the phone for Cain. Hopefully send a little money the other way or get a prospect attached.
but definitely agree they should extend him. 5 years is plenty.
Shrug..
Springer is 4 years older and just got 6 years.
Conforto should age better than him given the type of player he is. I'd rather give him 10 for 220 than 5 for 140 since AAV is the lux tax metric
I think both of those are way high. Conforto is a corner outfielder not a CF. Let's see where Ozuna clocks in. I'd guess Conforto ends up getting closer to Ozuna than Springer.
Dude has been only a part time CFer and probably won't be one at all by end of his deal.
By most metrics he's been a plus CF when he's played there. Agreed the aging curve may push him to a corner eventually but he's being paid as a CF for the next few years. And while he may not be Beltran he may be the best CF on the open market since Beltran (albeit 5 years older than Beltran when he hit FA).
In the PED era we saw players having great years 35-40 years of age. That was unusual before the PED era. In general a six year contract to a 31 year old player does not end well. I would pass on that and hope to see 5 year contracts for Lindor and Conforto
With Springer signed to play center for the Jays, the Yanks need to acquire Randal Grichuk to prevent the Red Sox from adding him. This guy has been a Yankee killer for years and it would be just like the Sox to make a deal for him. Seems like he hits 75% of his yearly HR's against the Yanks. Imagine him aiming for the Green Monster.
i think that money can be used better for the Mets. Most mets fans will think the same and if cohen is going to be worried bout the morons on mets twitter who wont understand roster construction, luxury tax penalties, etc.. then he is going to have a stressful time as owner. Luckily i dont think he will.

I agree that market has not fully adjusted to post-PED era.. (if we really are in such a thing, see: Cano, Robinson)...
However, I think the standard set with a lot of the 25-30 year old stars is locking them up through ~age 35-38..
Harper/Machado/Betts all examples of this..
You'd have to pay an average annual value premium to Conforto/Lindor in order to keep the years down. I'd be shocked if we get BOTH of those guys to sign deals for less than 8-10 years.
Not sure on that. Springer turns 32 this fall, not exactly a good time to give a 6 year deal out for huge AAV. Not a Mets fan but this wouldn't upset me.
Seems to me like Cohen needs to be careful not to go all in on year 1 - play the long game and just ignore the fans that can't accept that. I don't know his thoughts on the luxury tax, but if he wants to stay under it then there are naturally going to be limits to what he does.
but the AAV is super low so him falling off a cliff even after year 4 kinda doesn't matter.
I wouldn't give a 10 year deal to anyone anymore outside of a Mike Trout situation. The risk is too great for most of these players. Unless somehow the AAV is close to halved I'd rather pay a premium for 5 years.
But a good bit of his value is derived from his ability to play CF so once that declines he’s emphatically not a $25 mil a year guy. Toronto paid a premium.

yep, that's the rub. do you just realize you have to pay the extra years in order to get 3-4 good to very good years out of him? that's the issue with baseball contracts i guess. I wanted Springer but didn't think he was a "must sign." Mets had a good offense already WITHOUT Lindor.
on any planet, the Mets should be giving Michael Conforto a 10 year deal.
Sorry - he can walk. 5-6 years. Fine.

I don't get it.
But like I said, you can do 5-6 years for him, but be prepared to pay a premium, like $25-28M+ per year vs low $20-21M for a longer term
Dj can be an all star caliber 1B and hit for average until hes 40. He doesnt steal bases, he isn't dependent on power. He can be Paul Molitor minus the steals.
