OBJ situation in Cleveland

Milton : 1/20/2021 2:19 pm
Awhile back I posted that there was a possibility of OBJ being released, but that was before I double-checked and found that his 2021 was guaranteed for injury (and he's injured) so if they don't want him back, there only option is to trade him and the $15.75M he is due this year, and I'd be surprised if they can pull that off.
yes

yes I would.
Well I don’t know what you’re implying

but we didn’t sign him to trade him to trade for him back.
His career is basically over...
EricJ : 1/20/2021 2:23 pm : link
I was listening to NFL radio and the two hosts were talking about the Browns and the team's outlook for next year. They were talking about the offense and did not even mention OBJ. Again.. they were talking about next year.

OBJ was a meteor...
Cleveland played better without him

They could give up a draft pick and player for someone assuming his contract

I can only imagine being that age, with that much access to things and no rules or limits.

That catch basically ruined his football career.

he is still very talented

I don't see why they would not keep him regardless of their record without him. I could see Cleveland going furthur next season.
if I could trade chicken fried shit for him
djm : 1/20/2021 2:38 pm : link
i'd be ok with it, assuming he cleared the medical and stupidity protocols. No guarantees there.

It's guaranteed for injury and he's injured.

From OTC...

Beckham has injury guarantees in 2020 and 2021 which vest on the third day of the respective league year. When we get a full breakdown we will update the salaries, workout bonuses, etc...
According to spotrac, $12.8M of his $14.5M 2021 salary is guaranteed for injury. So they could potentially save roughly $3M if they released him and took the $12.8M. So they need to ask themselves if he's worth $3M to them in 2021 or if they are simply better off without him and the distractions that follow him.

and mayfield looking worthy of his draft slot is positively correlated with beckham getting put on IR. hard to believe that is just spurious. why would they want him back, even if healthy. maybe for depth if he can't be cut outright.
Trading

can someone explain the guaranteed for injury part? Does that mean if he is injured he is guaranteed the money but if he is healthy and cleared to play then it is not guaranteed?
I don't understand

How the so-called disciplinarian Tom Coughlin got soft on OBJ and his antics. If TC puts the hammer down early and often on OBJ's antics he probably has a much better career. He did him a disservice.

If he can't pass a physical on a certain date (in this case, it's the 3rd day of the 2021 league year, which begins in March), the year's salary becomes guaranteed. If he can pass a physical on that day, the salary isn't guaranteed. I'm not sure if there is flexibility in terms of the date of the physical (maybe some contracts set the date at the first day of training camp and others at the beginning of the league year).

It is guaranteed on the 3rd day of the league year. Which sounds like they can cut him in the first 2 days and it won't be guaranteed.
Injury guarantee
mfjmfj : 1/20/2021 3:24 pm : link
Not a contract expert, by any means, but I would read the language as written as the injury guarantee vesting on the third day of the league year. That is, if they cut him before then nothing. If he is cut because of injury after that day (including the pre-existing one) then contract guaranteed. Not sure how NFL contracts usually work in this regard, but I could defend either (multiple years of injury guarantee of year by year injury guarantee) as reasonable.

maybe he was never that much of a "disciplinarian". Exhibit A is Shockey. TC's reputation came from his focus on nonsense like how high players wore their socks.

Oh so OBJ's behavior is TC's fault. It is always someone else's fault today right?

Nobody takes ownership for their own actions anymore. OBJ was an adult... get a grip. Why is it that so many other players in the league have their head screwed on properly?

Agree, to say TC was soft on him is not even known. OBJ acts like an ass on his own accord.

Made his QB crazy trying to get the ball to him so he'd shut up.
A distraction puts it mildly.
His QB only starts to play well when OBJ is vacant the scene,,, Perhaps coincidental, most likely not.
Can he straighten out and fly right and - if not forge a return to greatness - become a top NFL receiver.? I have no idea, but I've read that he is rehabilitating with Barklay and that makes me feel he has a chance. So maybe the song isn't sung.

He may have got lost in that scene, but I hate the implication that he was doing drugs. And even if he was, who gives a shit? It's not like he was some junky (outside of fame maybe).

There was actually a pretty well reported story about him and Shep being out in the clubs and being offered something, and they both were clearly sober and Shep said I don't do drugs.

Stop demonizing drugs, this clearly wasn't a Johnny Manziel story. Newsflash, lots of these guys party and do drugs, Pat McAfee talks about it all the time. The new age guys not as much, but thats more generational thing.

Ummm, ahhhh, NO!

What you read (on Twitter) was a report that OBJ and Saquon "compared notes" on their ACL injuries and that they plan to get together (in person) at some point during their rehabs.

They are NOT "rehabbing together." If you have evidence to back up yiur mis-statement, please link it.

It's actually a pretty funny image, those two potentially training together. From Saquon's to OBJ's sets on the squat rack, someone would have to remove like 500# of weights each set of reps.

I stand corrected, mostly, here's the full Saquon quote
BelieveJJ : 1/21/2021 9:48 am : link
from Kevin Patra at NFL.com, taken originally from a Jordan Raanan tweet, IIRC.

Quote:
Only thing I do know that I have planned for sure, I'm definitely going to link up with [Odell]," Barkley said. "Obviously, Odell tore his knee a little too. I think we both need just being there. We're really good friends. Competing with each other and pushing each other will also be good too. That's the only thing I know for certain I will do. Everything else is up in the air."

Added Barkley: "But obviously we both wouldn't want to go through this, I guess you would say, but I think it's very important that since we are really close and we know each other so well and we are two competitors and we think we can really help each other, I do think it's important to really link up. But at the same time, we both have to come in with the mindset of getting 1 percent better each day. That's what we have to get from each other. Any way you can get it."

Take what you like from that.
