Sources: The Steelers are planning to sign ex-first-round QB Dwayne Haskins today. Haskins is meeting with the coaches now, and if all goes well, a deal will be hammered out.

Even if Ben isn’t there, there’s is no way the Steelers can reissue that number.
Risky pick
JonC : 1/21/2021 1:57 pm : link
I think Big Ben gets one more season, but perhaps the late season fade and his diminishing arm force their hand.
I think Ben
pjcas18 : 1/21/2021 1:59 pm : link
retires.

If they reassign #7 or not, no idea, but I got the sense from him he was done, but he's said that 5 or 6 times already, maybe he heels over the next couple months and is interested in playing still, but I wouldn't be surprised even a little if he hangs them up
Ben and Pouncey
JonC : 1/21/2021 2:01 pm : link
apparently had a pact to retire together. Tough to say no to $40M if the Stillers are willing to pick up his option, though. Ben looked close to shot by the end.

I think there is zero chance they will pay Ben 40 million with the way he looked the 2nd half of the season. I think it will either be retirement or restructure.
You've got to hand it to the Steelers
HomerJones45 : 1/21/2021 2:12 pm : link
that is a smartly run team. They will sign Haskins for peanuts and see if Tomlin can improve his maturity. If it works, they have a first round pick at qb. If it doesn't, they've lost nothing.

If Roethlisberger wants to come back, the Steelers will welcome him with open arms- 69% completions, 33 td against 10 picks on the season even though their running game fell apart.
one year deal

Breaking: The Steelers and QB Dwayne Haskins have reached an agreement on a one-year contract, a source told @AdamSchefter
.
He's certainly worth at a gamble
ZogZerg : 1/21/2021 2:17 pm : link
with a low salary. Maybe the light bulb finally goes on for him.
That's a good landing spot for him
Heisenberg : 1/21/2021 2:20 pm : link
If he fails there, he's probably out of the league.
I would have rather the Giants signed
pjcas18 : 1/21/2021 2:25 pm : link
Haskins than Alex Tanney.

LOL

cue the "I don't know why Alex Tanney bothers people so much" brigade.
Haskins has the tools
Beer Man : 1/21/2021 2:25 pm : link
If he ever grows up and starts acting like an adult, he might be a steal for the Steelers (no pun intended).

C'mon man! Haskins is not good in the QB room!
As what?

Oh for fuck's sake. If the giants signed Haskins you'd be calling it a move from a desperate team signing a failed draft pick and bitching about every penny given to him.

It's a fucking parody at this point.

I can't help believing that if it works out for Haskins in Pittsburgh, he will do something stupid to undo it all. Or alienate his teammates.
Just for reference OTC shows 14 teams currently over the cap
BillT : 1/21/2021 2:54 pm : link
And 5 more with under $10m in cap space. This isn’t that big a deal at this point in the offseason.
And just for comparison the Steelers are $33m over the cap
BillT : 1/21/2021 2:56 pm : link
So if that’s w well run organization we must be geniuses.
If Tomlin thought Haskins
NoPeanutz : 1/21/2021 2:58 pm : link
was any good, he could have taken him at 11 iirc, or wherever PIT picked in 2019 ahead of WAS. But like Miami, Cincinnati, NYG, DEN who also needed QBs, PIT took a hard pass.

Haskins is being brought in bc it will cost PIT next to nothing, and he is as good an option as any plan B to play QB. Not because they think he is any super secret talent that 31 other teams don't recognize.

...it's gotta be Big Ben, right?

Maybe they'll hire Ryan Leaf as a special consultant.
Haskins may have been a first round pick

That's hilarous, but we should give Ryan Leaf his due. He actually does go around the league and gives speeches to not fall in the traps he did. Actually a good role model now for all accounts.

Oh no, he absolutely has the right guy. Not sure why you’d even question that. Don’t you live with yourself? You’d think you’d have a better idea of who you are by now but I guess it’s not surprising that you’re clueless

This. Their 3rd string QB is a free agent and they decided Haskins would be a better 3rd string QB.
WHAT'S THE OVER/UNDER
BelieveJJ : 1/21/2021 8:27 pm : link
on how long he lasts there before Tomlin decides he's not worth the time investment?
When someone posts Ben's stats even though he's objectively
Zeke's Alibi : 1/21/2021 8:30 pm : link
not good anymore tells you everything you need to know about stats. They are team and situation dependant. Ben had a bunch of talented pass catchers and an offensive line that could pass block in an offense that essentially become pass only without Conner and the line struggling to run block. Of course he put up stats, however he is toast and everyone knows it and he's essentially holding the Steelers hostage with his contract. 23 millioin dead cap money and 40 millioin total. They have a very tough decision, but no way they cut him, even if its for the best of the team. No way you can cut a franchise QB like that unless you have something in the wings and Rudolph is terrible.

Does he? I mean, does he really have all the tools? Maybe, I guess? I can't tell. He's flashed now and then but I can't tell what he could be with his head screwed on straight.
Haskins may well be salvageable
bc4life : 1/22/2021 8:23 pm : link
Did not play a lot of college ball, lot of pressure on him.

Will it work - Coaches ability + Haskins Want-to. Want-to =?
Zeke
JonC : 1/25/2021 8:20 am : link
That's the way I see it, don't see them cutting Ben at all.
