There were a number of issues compounding Speaks’ early success in the league. He was playing in the 3-4 scheme and out of position to start in Kansas City. Then he showed up to training camp the following year and he was a bit overweight. The final issue with Speaks seemed to be in his recovery from his 2019 season-ending knee injury. He’s healthy, but still apparently working back to form after not playing football for an entire calendar year.

“I think, to your question, guys certainly handle rehab situations differently and how they come back,” Veach explained. “Everyone kind of progresses at different rates. And listen, without having any medical documentation in front me, I would say that bigger people – offensive linemen, defensive linemen – are probably a little bit slower to come back in regards to skill players, running backs, receivers, safeties, what have you. But again, you go back to the scenario in which we were in.

He came into camp and had lost weight and was healthy and I think he was able to practice throughout the course of the preseason and he worked hard to put himself in that position, so when guys are ready to go, we defer to the medical expertise of our staff and we let them go out there and compete and see how everything shakes out.

Again, it certainly did put him behind the eight ball in that regard. Not having a year of football is certainly going to be tough, and then when you throw in the factor of having (Frank) Clark and Tanoh (Kpassagnon) and (Alex) Okafor, Taco (Charlton) had a good camp, obviously he made the roster, and Mike Danna had a really good camp, so it was just one of those scenarios for him where having the year off, having to go through a lengthy rehab process and going out there competing against that deep defensive line was a tough ask. He competed his tail off and I’m sure he’ll learn a lot from this experience here and it will help him in the future.”

The depth the Chiefs acquired at the defensive end position allowed for a competitive training camp. Rather than holding onto a player for too long because of draft status, Veach and his staff chose to go with the best players. It’s a tried and true strategy for winning football teams.

“Our staff, both coaching and personnel staff, we’re always committed to doing what we feel is best for the team and playing the best players,” Veach said. “And the guys that are on our active roster, we felt that day-by-day and the way they graded out, they just performed better and they deserve to be on the team.”

Speaks was not claimed on waivers following his release from Kansas City. He wasn’t among those signed to the Chiefs’ practice squad and he’s yet to find another team.

Spent last season on the Cowboys PS. They released him on 1/11/2021.
Interesting player

He's 25 and was a former second rounder, so you know there's potential there. He's versatile in both a good and bad way. You can line him up as a 3-4 DE, 4-3 DT or even as an EDGE rushing the passer, but that also means he's kind of a guy without a position.

Worth a shot

if they think they can find a role for him. Nice to have a coaching staff that seems like they can actually develop players.
I feel like we do an awful lot of bottom churning

for Judge (Miss. State) to greenlight another Ole Miss Rebel on this team. ;-) I saw a good bit of Speaks in college. Glad to see him get a shot here.

The team is not in a dire cap situation, they have many options to clear space; plus with the large cap space projected for 2022 & 23, they have the resources to do what they feel they need to do; they just have to be smart about it. As for Speaks its a one year futures contract. I can't imagine it's a very big contract or has a lot of guaranteed money in it.

That's ok. When you are a bad team, you have to do that just on the chance something turns up. In all likelihood this guy is a washout-he couldn't crack a Cowboy defense that had a hard time stopping their grandmothers, but there is nothing to lose by giving him a try.

All you need to do is add a comma to your thread title. Giants sign, Breeland speaks!

intrigued with picking up former early round draft picks. There’s usually some untapped potential there. If anyone can find it it’ll be coach Chaos.

So better at rushing the passer then?
Probably a 5 technique in Giants defense...

This means we are cutting LW and this is his replacement. LW has gotten really good, so we need to let him go because he will want more money. This is how you build a team.

Ya think? I think too.

I do agree with the bottom churning notion. Giants can't draft to save their lives

I think this thinking is common on BBI, but I also think it's fallacious. Three years in, a guy's draft position doesn't tell you anything about his potential.

Presumably every team has scouted these guys, so they go back to their scouting reports. It's like "Well, we liked him back then. Maybe he needs a change of scenery?" "Sure, why not." So the guy who is nearly out of the league, for one reason or another, gets another chance. More often than not, he washes out. But sometimes it works out. Corey Coleman was drafted at #15 overall, to take one example close to home. The Giants gave him a second chance figuring he still had potential. Nope. But somehow Damontre Moore stuck around the league for a while. Darian Thompson was starting for Dallas last year.

Having said that, sign the guy to a reserve/futures contract? Sure why not? He had a solid rookie season and maybe he's healed and can make a comeback. It's a roll of the dice, but the stakes for the Giants are low.

I knew someone would get it!!!
Why
AcidTest : 1/22/2021 10:21 am : link
not? He seems like exactly the type of player the Giants should sign to a reserve/futures contract. He was a high round pick, and is coming off an injury. KC was also loaded on the DL. I had forgotten all about him, but this looks like a good decision.
