NFT: Knicks @ Jazz 9pmest

nygiants16 : 1/26/2021 9:04 am
This will be a tough game, Jazz have been rolling since they lost to the Knicks, i believe 7 in a row..

Based on Thibs comments yesterday hr is stickong to the same stsrting lineup, i just hope he starts mixing and matching more and gets at least 2 shooters on the court at the same time..

Like to see Quick get some minutes with Randle and Rj with Burks on the court as well..

Hope for the best but this will be tough..

Should have been 2-2 on this trip.

Maybe they'll shock the world tonight.

Jazz have won 8 in a row & have had plenty of rest, last playing Saturday. This is going to be a tough one to win.
Id be shocked

If the Knicks keep this within 20
So...

How many more awful starts from our current starting PG, do we need to see before Thibs names Quickley the starter? I get that Thibs does not trust rookies but he's gotta be getting sick of seeing Payton's selfish game, which is funny in itself since the guy literally can't shoot or play defense (even though he's supposedly known to be a "good" defender.) And don't give me the "But he can set up the offense stuff." Please.

There are better PG's to be had on other team's benches and we are right around the time that report came out about the Knicks wanting to wait 20 games or so before making a move. Time to make a move.

Its not that Thibs doesnt trust rookies, Quickley is flourishing coming off the bench and he doesnt want to start him to early and he struggles..

It has nothing to do with trust, if he didnt trust him he wouldnt let him finish games
and i want Quick to start more than anyone
nygiants16 : 1/26/2021 10:16 am : link
i actually wouldnt mind if Thibs started Rivers at point and Payton was completely oit of the rotation..

Completely agree on Payton out of the rotation but Rivers is not the answer at PG either. Can't have your PG overdribble and not be able to get in the paint. I like Quickley off the bench too and think it would be the right spot for him, IF we didn't have argubaly the worst starting PG in the league in front of him.

Ideally, Frank or DSJ would have shown something in practice but clearly that hasn't been the case, even with Frank always banged up. Was hoping Harper would get more of a look but he might get roasted on defense with his size.
The insistence on starting Payton is frustrating
Mike in NJ : 1/26/2021 10:58 am : link
He just is not a good fit with Barrett, Robinson, and to a lesser extent Randle on the floor. The spacing is crap with the starting lineup which is forcing Randle/Barrett to take more mid range jump shots when they are both at their best when they can drive to the basket. Having Quickley or Rivers unclogs the paint because now there is more than one guy to defend on the perimeter that can make 3s at an above average rate.

The strangest thing about it is that Payton actually makes sense as a fit with the second unit. Putting him out on the court with Burks, Knox, and Toppin means there are 3 guys that can shoot on the floor, and again, frees up the paint for Payton to penetrate and create off of the drive.
Quick is definitely the future starting pg and the next step in that
Ira : 1/26/2021 11:08 am : link
process will be for him to get more time with the Knicks starters.
less concerned with Elfrid starting
jpkmets : 1/26/2021 11:28 am : link
more concerned that he always plays the entire first quarter and that Q is usually third off the bench.

Don't care if Elfrid starts but the minute totals need to shift to 18/30 or so at least (in Quickley's favor).

11.5 point dog tonight. Pretty big NBA number but the Jazz are red hot.

I'd like IQ to start but I have trust in Thibs. I just wish Payton played a lot less and had a much shorter leash.

Have to be pretty happy about Dallas' start. Would be incredible to get a lottery pick out of them. I never root for it but they are Luka injury away from being a bottom 10 team or even worse.

Does the new play in tournament effect the lottery?
Good question
GMEN46 : 1/26/2021 11:48 am : link
About play in tournament and the lottery I’m assuming if a 10 seed win the play in tourney then they would not be in the lottery? Seems very unlikely dallas finished worse than 10 in the west unless doncic injury

10 plays 7 and 8 plays 9, whoever loses those matchups would be in the lottery
Payton is better defensively
larryflower37 : 1/26/2021 12:24 pm : link
and Tibs puts a high value on that especially against strong guards like Curry, Dame, and Mitchell.

I think Tibs has done a good job managing Quickley minutes and exposure.
If he is hot Tibs plays him, but there have been a couple of games he is off, and Tibs pulls and limits his minutes.
Which is a good way to keep his confidence up and bring him along slowly.

totally random
Enzo : 1/26/2021 1:26 pm : link
but Wayne Ellington is doing well in Detroit. He was one of the guys I would have liked for them to have tried to keep on a cheaper deal. His TS% is a ridiculous .745 right now which is obviously unsustainable. Given he only signed for the vet min, it was certainly doable. And at that number he'd have been very easy to trade.
apparently the Knicks

I would be ok with it if he came in as the back up and Quick became the starter and bye bye Payton..

Also would depend on cost

He still is, now behind Delon Wright. I just don't think given his relationship with Thibs and that they'll have to give up something for him that they'll play him off the bench if he does join.
if true
Enzo : 1/26/2021 3:34 pm : link
this indicates the front office is going to try and make a half assed run at back end of the playoffs. We should still be in asset gathering mode - or looking to convert assets into players who actually might have a future here. Rose would almost certainly be gone after this season.
The guy to trade for, from that same article, is Lonzo.
Jon in NYC : 1/26/2021 3:36 pm : link
Buying low, probably not a ton of upside there but he is a 3/D guy with playmaking upside. You sort of have to buy that he's really the 37% from 3 guy from last season instead of the 29% from 3 guy this year in order for it to be appealing, but he'd definitely be the best PG on this roster and is still the same age as Obi.

but what do they want for him? I have no idea what the market might be.
If it costs Frank and Knox sure

Yeah I'd give Knox and DSJ or something like that. He's about to be a RFA and in the middle of a bad year so he really doesn't have much value.
I would take Rose for a 2nd.
larryflower37 : 1/26/2021 4:14 pm : link
Rose is only making 7 million on the last year of his deal.
The pistons have Wright and Hayes at PG.
Maybe it opens the Knicks up to move DSJ, Frank, and Payton at the deadline.

three point shooting teams in the league in terms of attempts, makes, %, you name it...and our offense is ranked 25th in the league. The last thing we need is a ball hogging lead guard in his 30s who loves the mid range jumper.
Well, we're already paying Taj Gibson and Joakim Noah for nothing...

Let's add DRose.
I don't understand what Payton brings to the table.
81_Great_Dane : 1/26/2021 6:02 pm : link
He's not a shooter. He's an ok penetrator, I guess, sort of. He doesn't get a lot of assists or score a lot of points. He doesn't seem to be a plus defender. He seems to be kind of ok at a few things and good at nothing.

But I don't think I have a practiced eye. What am I missing?

Nothing. That is a very solid summation of who he is. Very jack of most trades, master of none, very bad at shooting 3s.

Rose is better than payton and doesn't effect Quickley at all.
Rose is fine with coming off the bench and mentoring Quickley.
Would rather him than DSJ and Payton

As would I.
I want to see more decisiveness frpm JR.
chopperhatch : 1/26/2021 8:50 pm : link
He is incredibly skilled, but he is all over the place with his approach. If he starts backing down a big, at least make a move to the hoop before you just eject the ball to the perimeter. He has moves, lets see them!

If they back down off him, he has to take his open shots and not get gun shy because he missed a few. Guy gives him 6 feet, set himself up and take the shot like its practice. If the defender wants to get in his mix, thats when to utilize the nice handle and breakdown the D.

My only problem with JR, is he doesnt stick to any plan of attack. He's a wonderful player when he is assertive.

I dont if i agree with IQ starting this early. He's close but he is still a kid. Just give him the mins and if he plays well, leave him for crunch time.
