Masahiro Tanaka’s seven-year run in Yankees pinstripes appears to be complete, with the right-hander reportedly advancing negotiations to remain in Japan and return to his original team, the Rakuten Eagles of Nippon Professional Baseball.

I really wanted him to get a ring here.

Fucking Astros and their trash cans...
Tanaka was amazing when he first joined the Yanks,

then he got hurt and to my eye never seemed to be quite as good again. Good, but not as good as he was at first.
What really did him in were the lower seams on the ball

Yup, agreed

Shame we couldn't win a ring during his time as a Yankee. He proved to be a really solid guy for us, who delivered in a lot of big games, including playoffs.

Really liked Tanaka

and hopefully he can continue to be great in Japan if he’s really going back there. That would be a good thing for the fans there to see him again while he’s still a good pitcher. It’s probably easier on him too. He’ll get to be home while covid is still raging and probably get paid about the same as mlb teams are offering him.
i'd love to know

what happened to his splitter. Was it the ball or something mechanical that forced him to change how he threw it. Either way, loved him while he was here and while he didn't live up to the initial hype, ain't got nothing but love for him.
Tanaka actually loved being a Yankee.

He’ll always get a standing O from me.

Greg mentioned it above. They changed the seams on the ball to a lower profile and it seems he could never get the same grip on it. Although it’s possible that’s just a coincidence to when he started to lose effectiveness on the pitch. I’d love to hear Tanaka give an honest opinion on it someday

And of course Rawlings and MLB deny a change in the manufacturing of the ball, even though independent parties have analyzed balls and determined otherwise.
He was a damned good pitcher and a bulldog

The Yankees definitely got their money's worth. I'm just sorry he didn't get a ring out of it. Hope he has nothing but success back home.
I wish he had

taken the 18 months off and had the surgery . He would have been so much more . Tanaka has no intention of ever pitching again for anyone other than the Yankees .

There were so many great moments , clutch efforts . However , my favorite is when he tagged up and scored from third against Saberhagen . Of course Nevin was a moron to send him . Tanaka blew our both hamstrings . Went in standing . Continued right through the dugout , clutching a couple of hands as he winced by .

I see that . I compare it to the everyday guys who miss 3 months with a calf . Can’t understand it .
Tanaka signed 8.6 million for 2 y ars with a Japanese team

Great deal for that team. I think the Yanks got fair value with Tanaka over the length of the deal and did not throw an over pay contract the second go around. They cut
solid Yankee career

He never quite lived up the hype and had his rough stretches, but overall he was a quality SP. I wish him the best of luck for the rest of his career.
I love Naki

Hope he comes back next year. But it looks like he's done in the MLB...
