Realistic Offseason Plan

JoeyBigBlue : 1/27/2021 10:54 am
I wanted to know what what you guys would do this offseason to make the New York Giants a playoff team in 2021. Let’s make this a realistic plan, not plans where we are signing Leonard Williams, Kenny Golloday, and Joe Thuney to huge contracts. What would you do ?
LW is a priority re-sign.
Big Blue '56 : 1/27/2021 10:57 am : link
Pick-up 2nd or 3rd tier OL depth, but they must be versatile..

Go to the draft for WRs and CB
Players will be on sale
Chip : 1/27/2021 11:06 am : link
other than the all pro types like Williams. There are a number of teams who have cap space and will be much better next season and a team like New Orleans who will feel the pain. The Giants have contracts that can be worked with to create cap space and players who can be released. I just want Williams back and find a WR in free agency so we are not backed into a corner at the draft.
My Plan
giants#1 : 1/27/2021 11:09 am : link
1. Extend Zietler 1-2 years and free $4-6M space
2. Cut Solder
3. Re-sign Flemming (or comparable vet OT) for $2-3M to be the swing OT (Thomas/Peart start)
4. Cut Tate
5. Sign LW long term - 5 yrs/$90M
6. Let DT walk
7. Sign a 2nd tier WR on a team friendly deal. Personally, I'd like Corey Davis for 1 year/$10-12M which may be a little low, but I don't think is unrealistic given his up-and-down performance and the cap decrease. Also gives him the flexibility to get paid next offseason if he has a big season.
8. Not sure who, but I'd look for another CB in the secondary FA market too. See if there's another Ryan that can't get what he wants initially and then settles for a 1 year deal.

Personally avoiding the 'big 3' WRs (Robinson, Golloday, Godwin) as I think they'll all be substantially overpaid.

Draft
WR/CB/ER - grab one of each on 1st two days. Specific player/round for each is based on value at the time.

Day 3 - at least one G/C, at least one TE, DL depth.
I think they have to resign LW and DT
BillT : 1/27/2021 11:10 am : link
Otherwise the D takes a step back. That shouldn't happen. I believe that is possible under our cap situation. After that it's some lower priced FA. The draft should prioritize upgrading the talent at WR. EDGE, OL, TE, CB are all on the table for other draft choices or FA.
The laundry list of needs is too much to realistically hope
The_Boss : 1/27/2021 11:11 am : link
They all get resolved. I’ve probably posted that the last 3 years on this site. I think LW gets resigned to a fat contract (🤮), they bring in a top 3 FA WR, and look for additional WR and CB help in rounds 1 and 2. They kick the can down the road again on finding that elusive alpha edge rusher. They hope Engram doesn’t fuck up as much in 2021 as he did in 2020. And they pray Jones’ improves his pocket awareness, decision making, and processing speed prior to week 1.
My Offseason Plan
JoeyBigBlue : 1/27/2021 11:33 am : link
Cut the following players

Zeitler (12 million saved)
Tate (6 million saved)
Solder (6 million saved)
Core (2 million saved)
Mayo (2.3 million saved)

Sign LW 4 years 68 million with (40m guaranteed)

Let DT walk... tough but we don’t have the cap space
Let Gallman walk

Sign cheap veteran TE (1 year 5 million )

Draft

First Round Best Edge Rusher/CB available
Second Best WR/DT available
Third best available (WR/DT missed round 2)
4th Best OG or Tackle available
6th round best CB/WR available
6th round best RB Availabe.

This is a great point as evidenced by how dominant those three teams were this season.

That’s not true at all. The Giants controlled the division 3 weeks from the end of the season. The Eagles aren’t in great shape, WFT doesn’t have a QB, and the Cowboys have a ton of questions on D. With a good offseason we should definitely compete going into year 2 of Judge’s tenure.
If all LW wanted was 4/68/40

or a list that details all the good to great players that could be had in a trade, this offseason. To me, that's how we get that player. Think Stephon Diggs.

What team is looking to blow things up at a certain position or even overall? What team thinks it has a glut of talent at a particular position and is open to moving the star player to make room for the younger player? Or what team just wants to nuke the whole thing like the Giants did back in 2018 when they traded the likes of JPP?

FA is one thing but I would be much more inclined to trade for that star if possible.

This plan seems very realistic to me, and I would sign up for it. Need to continue building the OLine.

I fear that 5/100/55 may be more realistic. I hope I am wrong though.

If he wants that much, then I’d let him walk and and focus on Tomlinson. Or we can play hardball with him and franchise him again.
Difficult
Thegratefulhead : 1/27/2021 1:17 pm : link
I would get creative with extensions and move cap dollars to 2022. I would try to sign LW aggressively early. If we can't get him or he wants to wait completely give up on him and go elsewhere.

Cutting
Solder
Tate
Zeitler
Trading Engram if I can get an early 3 or better.

Then we have to see what falls to us in the draft will depend on where we go FA. Hoping for one of Pitts, Surtain, Chase, Smith, Parsons or Rousseau would trade back only if a decisive trade win because I think drop off is steep after we pick.

Really hard to pick FAs because it is so fluid and LW changes everything.
I'll give it a go

Cut:

Trade:
TE Evan Engram for 2022 pick

Re-sign:
DT Leonard Williams 4/80
DT Dalvin Tomlinson 3/33

FA:
Sign CB Michael Davis 3/36
Sign TE Gerald Everett 3/20
Sign WR Curtis Samuel 3/24

1st WR Kadarius Toney
2nd OT Alex Leatherwood
3rd ER Patrick Jones

I think 4 years is more likely, but yeah, I think he wants 20 per.

I rather keep Engram at 6 million than sign Everett for 3 years and 20 mil.
You are getting a pick too with the switch
adamg : 1/27/2021 1:37 pm : link
Everett for 8 mill and 5-6th rounder or Engram for 6. I'm taking the former.
I can't divide for some reason
adamg : 1/27/2021 1:38 pm : link
That's Everett for 6.7 not 8.
Agree
PaulN : 1/27/2021 1:52 pm : link
That signing Leonard Williams is a priority, but its time to also be smart about these things, the market is going to be flooded with players getting released, you can't sign a player for 20 million when other players get 10. They need to take their time and let the market value set itself, uts not a typical season, overpaying players is a great way to screw everything up. The team needs an edge rusher, needs a cornerback, and needs to continue to add to the defensive line. They needto add to the offensive line also, need a tight end,a running back, and a wide reciever or two. They need to do all that and keep the salary structure in good shape. How they do that will be what tells us if the organization is moving in the right direction because it's time to be an above .500 team.

Some interesting names here. Do you really think they'll be a lot of 1 year deals? I'd be surprised if all those guys took such short term deals. What do you think Agholor would get per year?

Kelvin Beachum is an interesting figure. He seems to have been underpaid. 2 mill last year to be a starting tackle? Weird.

Forrest Lamp is a name I haven't heard in a while. What's his deal? Just injuries? Could be a high upside kind of signing.

For all you people that propose cutting Ziegler how does that not make us worse? Who you going to replace him with? Hernandez? Please the guy has gotten worse the last 2 years and lost his job to a rookie this year. You need a better alternative than Hernandez or this line takes a big step back from being mediocre at best. We are talking about a 3 year pro here not a rookie. The trend is down. Not to mention Lemieux still has a ways to go in development. Run game was OK with him but pass blocking was an issue.

The priorities besides resigning LW and DT is getting a WR, edge guy and corner. I am not drafting a TE with the first pick. As frustrating as EE is that is probably the fifth need at best.
Sign LW....
George from PA : 1/27/2021 2:43 pm : link
Keep Zeitler of possible.....

Tomillson would be a nice to have....but not a must have...I like him but replaceable.

As FA goes....I would go with

Curtis Samuel....only 25, has a DG connection....and arrow pointing up.

Bud Dupree.....must be healthy....maybe prove it deal....but he single handedly wreak the Giants last year....seems to fit skene and multi-deminsonal edge

Get a 2 way TE....

Tate must go. Solder probably retire. All the old guys that looked old (Lewis, etc)....

Draft top corner.....D should be strong.

Cluster draft Wars, get a guard and a 2 way TE and developmental RB.

Cutting Zeitler saves us 12 million. You need that cap space to sign Williams or any other priority Free Agent. You can also get a veteran guard at a quarter of that price. Zeitler is good but he’s not 14 mill good at this point in time.
Zeitler probably willing to renegotiate deal
George from PA : 1/27/2021 3:10 pm : link
As market will not be great...seems to like being here....an entirely new right side is not ideal ..and not sure, finding a compreable replacement will be that easy....

But I suspect DG and Judge will figure out best course of action.
My Giants 2021 Plan

Due to camp constraints this upcoming offseason I expect a lot of players to land 1 year deals in order to re-enter FA in a year when the cap goes up again.

Agholor is a tough guy to predict. I think he will get 6-9 million per season but he had a very good year for the Raiders averaging over 18 yards a reception.

I have been a fan of Beachum since he was a Steeler and he would replace Fleming as the swing tackle and insurance if Peart isn't completely ready. He should be cheaper than Fleming was. I'm guessing a 1 year $2.5 million deal.

Forrest Lamp dealt with injuries and bad luck with the Chargers. He is exactly the type of player I hope the Giants target this offseason. He started all 16 games at guard and gave up 2 sacks. He had an up and down season but it was his first full season so he should get better with a full healthy offseason. A 1 year prove it deal could prove to be a big win for the Giants if he improves and begins to live up to his potential.

my priority signs are both LW and DT. Then another mig to high level CB or LB. In the draft I go WR and WR in rounds 1 and 2 (or Pitts and then WR). (All assuming Parsons doesn't fall; if he does it would be Parsons/WR/WR). The BPA with emphasis on OL and CB.
too early to tell....But

Does Solder decide to retire?

Make a decision on Tate. Probably a cut

Sign LW within reason

See if there are any reasonable trade offers for Engram

Realize that DT is not going to be retained, unless LW becomes cost prohibitive.

Ascertain trade value of players who may not be in long term plans: Ximenes, Beal.

8. Low Cost CB
9. Resign Gallman
10. Look for bargins....Bud Dupree 1yr 12M, Kyle Fackrell 1yr 4M, Malcom Brown when cut by Saints, Preston Smith if Cut by the Packers, CB Robert Alford when cut by Arizona???
