Culley, 65, is a surprise hire to most, but he will become the second minority coach to get a head coaching job this cycle, the first Black coach. The Jets hired Robert Saleh.
The fact that Culley blew away the Texans in his virtual and in-person interviews is not a surprise to all who know him. He served as the assistant head coach for Andy Reid and for John Harbaugh and worked for Bill Cowher in Pittsburgh.
Culley currently is the Ravens’ assistant head coach/passing game coordinator and receivers coach and received a strong endorsement from Harbaugh.
Culley has never served as a coordinator in his 27-year coaching career, which makes him “an outside-the-box” choice as John McClain of the Houston Chronicle put it.
of a placeholder HC as they cut down roster and rebuild next two years and then he’ll be replaced by a younger coach. I really doubt seeing Watson stay.
Guys, mind you he's much younger but Judge was a ST coordinator

Indeed. It's time to strip it down. So this is a strong signal that Watson is gone...
so many of the hires over the last few years have been young gun types. This guy has been a position coach in the league for 25 years. Rarely do you see someone like that get a HC chance. Coached WR a ton but also QB's for awhile and has been an AHC under Reid and Harbaugh.
Who knows if he's a good hire but score one for the veteran coaches out there.

As a 65 yo myself who has faced age prejudice before, BRAVO.
Folks here ignoring his AHC credentials under both Reid and Harbaugh, two of the most accomplished HCs in the league, are missing the boat deliberately.
this "they better hire young" thing. Players respect and follow people who will lead them to success and that they care about them. There is a lot of value in experience and I bet a lot of players will respect that this "old guy" gets a shot.
They said he blew them away in the interview. With Andy Reid for 10 years and now with Harbaugh. Seen two really good programs work.
Maybe David Culley is the next coming of Bill Belichick...I don't know.
Here's what I do know....In the past year the FO of the Texans have:
1.) traded away their best player and got fleeced in the deal.
2.) the "rumors" about why DHop was run out
3.) ostracized their franchise QB to the point that he is demanding a trade
4.) criticized heavily for the process in which they hired a new HC
Maybe this decision is the turn of events they needed....But they haven't been on a string of "nailed it" that's for sure.

All true, but 3 of the 4 were all on the former coach. And "heavily criticized" really means that Watson was angry that he hadn't been consulted in the search. Nick Caserio is no fool, so I'm inclined to give this a chance before condemning it.
Maybe this hire was in part to smooth over tensions with DW, or maybe Culley is a placeholder while they clean house and rebuild. We'll know pretty quickly by whether Watson is dealt or not.
is so impressed, he formally asked to be traded this AM. Of course, it had been rumored, but Watson has now approached the team stating it
ESPN is reporting from a source that the request was made two weeks ago. The source is also telling ESPN that the new HC won't make a difference in Watson's thinking ESPN Article - ( New Window )
...hit post too soon. I am joking, as I don't know anything about him, but it does seem odd.

I’m understanding Watson’s view more and more.

Wow Ravens WR coach and passing game coordinator? Over Bienemy?
You could at least see a productive STs unit in NE. Bmore had a terrible passing game 😂

Maybe there's a valid reason(s) teams keep passing on him. And Culley is black, so the pitchforks about race can sit back in this one.
The usual progression form coordinator to HC often does not work.
This is a surprise but he spent a long time working on Andy Reid's staff in Philly
He's been with some very good organizations
Maybe this will work out for Houston. Maybe it wont, but to suggest that a professional football time hired "placeholder" is foolish.
What concludes they were wrong?
They said he blew them away in the interview. With Andy Reid for 10 years and now with Harbaugh. Seen two really good programs work.
Hope it works our for him.

Well, he's almost as old as Belichick, so he has that going for him.
Also, I think he was the assistant HC in Baltimore.
Yeah, he's a little old, but there is no reason he couldn't work out. Hiring a HC is crap shoot.

But all these guys had HC jobs well before their 60s.
