Sleeper Running Back

TC : 2/11/2021 6:33 pm
I've already mentioned Oklahoma RB Rhamondre Stevenson as a consideration to add some guts and additional talent to the Giants' running game. Quick, and also with some long speed, he's a big (6' 235-247) RB who can also punish defenders in short yardage with good vision and quick feet. I expect him to go somewhere between 4th & 6th round, unless some team really is nuts over him, or his 6 game disciplinary suspension was for some serious stuff. That will typically sink a prospect, sometimes even making them undraftable.

But there's a Div 1 small school prospect who is a true sleeper also has loads of talent. Listed at 5'10", 229 Caleb Huntley from Ball State has exciting potential. VERY quick with great feet and lots of power, Huntley has posted over 1,000 yards in each of the two seasons he's played a full season, 2017 & 2019. In 2018 & 2020 he only played in 6 & 3 games respectively. If injury is the cause, his football days may be over, but if he's still physically sound, he's an intriguing prospect, either very late, or as a priority UDFA.

Kid's got vision, quickness, lateral agility, great contact balance and tons of power.

I’d add Stevie Scott from Indiana

Big strong downhill runner with good skills. Be a good addition.

This is the way to find RBs - later rounds or UDFA.

I like both RBs out of UNC - Carter and Williams. Pretty good dual threats in the running game.

And I'm liking what I've seen in some video of VTech RB Khalil Herbert.

Not sure what your criteria is for sleeper

kylin hill is obviously better, but will also be drafted higher.

LOVE Trey Sermon

Hard, punishing runner with good vision. He is going to be a good one that can be had round 3-4.

How about some of those holes Darrisaw opened up on the left side for Herbert, too?

Haven't looked extensively at any RB's yet, but think

both Herbert and Hill have something to offer. Hill looks to be explosive, but also looks a little light in the britches, and I'm looking for some beef. Like Herbert better, he's quick, has great vision and is decisive. It's not his fault that his OL opened some huge holes for him to run through.

But Huntley's ability to see and squeeze through narrow or closing holes with power is one the skills I value highly. Think he also might measure up shorter than the 5'10", but he's a beefy guy, and of interest as an UDFA to me if he hasn't gotten too banged up.
Herbert had a very good week at the Senior Bowl

tough runner who was outstanding in pass protection.
Rhamondre Stevenson

I've seen this guy take shots that would have brought down a moose, but not Stevenson. He just bounces off and keeps on motoring. He is one big dude. He's a mean motor scooter and a bad go-getter.
I don't know anything about these guys, but

I think you're on the right track. The Giants need someone young and cheap as #3 bac. I'm assuming Barkley and Gallman are back so they need someone with a different skill set. I'm assuming the ideal prospect is a good short-yardage back with plus receiving and blocking skills, and who can contribute on special teams. Would not be a bit surprised to see the Giants go for that kind of player late in the draft. Depends on who is on the board and who they got earlier, of course, but it makes sense 100%.

Honestley, Stevenson and Sermon are not Sleeper Running Backs IMHO

Another look at Huntley.

Here's a video of the player responding in an interview, coach's remarks and practice. He alludes to a troubled past, depending upon its nature, that too can sink a prospect. One of the reasons the Giants got Bradshaw in the 7th. But he got a 3+ grade average, and seems determined.

I'd describe his build as squat, and bet he's closer to 5'8" than 5'10", but we'll see. He's also got short limbs. A bit of a bowling ball. But he's a natural and gifted power RB, and deserves a shot.

RB is a position
arniefez : 2/12/2021 1:06 pm : link
especially backup RB, that good teams fill with day 3 picks or UDFAs. The supply exceeds the demand every year. WR is trending in that direction too but not there yet. Hopefully the Giants can find cheap help in terms of picks and dollars to go along with Barkley. Gallman is not worth keeping for anything but close to vet minimum.
Among sleepers I like Master Teague, OSU'S back up,

some. 5'11", 225, power runner who can move the chains. UDFA value add.
