Solder - Cap Manipulation?

eyerishyank : 2/13/2021 11:12 am
Is there any chance the Giants agree to do something similar to what the Saints did with Brees deal to get extra cap space for 2021? Also, if there is an agreement where a player could again opt out for 2021 is there a chance that the Giants and Solder could agree with a wink-wink deal to push retirement to 2022 and gain back the Solder $ for 2021 and take the hit when theoretically the cap would move up again based on media deals, fans in stands, etc?

There are a lot smarter people here with the nuances so figured I would ask.
Absolutely not.

That makes no sense. If released we save money this year. No need to have Solder on the books for more years than he needs to be. The Saints in a really bad spot with respect to the cap. We aren't.
It was the structure of the Brees contract

When your in cap hell you put a retired player on your roster to save cap space.
I'm not sure I understand you point robbieballs

If the Giants had the choice you don't think they'd rather take the 10 mil hit in 22 and 6 in 23 rather than in 21 and 22?
Yeah, that's my point

Gettleman did a great job getting our cap into a spot where we were able to front load contracts. If we are pushing money down the road it should be for guys like Bradberry and Martinez not Solder.
OK got it

I disagree - I think if there is an opt-out of the 2021 season (who knows what that will look like) it would be advantageous for the giants to be able to slide Nate's contract again if the idea is that he will retire in any case. basically you would save 6 million in 2021 (compared to releasing him) add 4 million to 2022 (10 million instead of 6) and add 6 million to 2023 (0 -6 million). To me those are valid tradeoffs and given the market the 6 mil could buy you more due to the depressed cap than the future $ would.
If he's released it's either pre/post June 1 - $6m/$10m

If he retires, then the Giants could ask for arbitration to recoup a portion of his signing bonus.

highly unlikely op outs are allowed next year with vaccines readily available by august

The Giants will be perfectly fine leaving the cap hits from his bonus where they are right now (with a June 1st cut) -- 6.5M in 2021 and 4M in 2022.

The league and the PA are trying to rework the revenue and cap models to essentially "borrow" money from the future cap expansions to shore up 2021.

I don't expect the 2021 cap to be close to the 175M floor negotiated. I won't be surprised if it's flat YoY at 198M. And there be a 10M decrease in expansion in both 22 and 23.
Dead money
UGADawgs7 : 2/13/2021 3:11 pm : link
Isn’t only the year a player is cut? I must have thought wrong but always thought once a player is cut, the dead cap hit is only that season? What happens if he retires and someone mentioned trying to recoup some of bonus $? Does that help the cap?
I think what you are saying is valid and could be used by teams

If you think it is a good idea or not is a different topic.

its a good idea
GiantsFan84 : 2/13/2021 5:53 pm : link
it would certainly allow them the opportunity to go get a WR and bring back LW if they did
Christian is on point
Sneakers O'toole : 2/13/2021 6:02 pm : link
The league is going to borrow from future years to avoid a drastic drop in the cap. They have to. Roster armageddon is bad for the league. And they have new TV deals coming in the very near future.

That would be good
eyerishyank : 2/13/2021 7:26 pm : link
Christian - if the cap was that high this is less of a consideration. I had seen reports that 180-185 is the likely outcome but it seems like things have fluctuated a lot. I view this year as a bit of an inflection point and would like to be aggressive in order to be able to a) fill all of the fillable holes - WR (prob 2), ER, CB, LW, DT and maybe a couple of o-line starters. Being aggressive I think that is all doable, and then we have the kind of team where we can really evaluate Jones and if we deem he's not the guy, have a really nice core in place for either a vet QB in 2022 or use assets on another rookie who will have a better chance to succeed early.
Atlanta Falcons are in the worst cap space
rasbutant : 2/13/2021 9:16 pm : link
They are way over and don’t have anyone that is an easy cut. The biggest chunks to restructure are guys that they might want to move in from in the near future. If the CAP stays at 180k they won’t even have room to sign the 1st round pick. They might be forced to trade down just to get the lower salary slot.
I think everyone is missing what brees did
bhill410 : 2/13/2021 9:53 pm : link
The point here is solder - if he decides to retire - lowering his salary number. The answer to that is obviously yes but there is no indication he is retiring. If he does and he agrees to renegotiate yes we would get significant cap savings.
It's not the salary....its the bonus.
George from PA : 2/14/2021 5:05 am : link
He is still signed for 2 years....so keeping him is a massive burden.
