Good to know we have some sufferable fans on the site. Come to think of it, I’ve been sufferable since ‘56. Lots of sufferings...
So when you say your nightly prayers for those poor Lions & Jets fans’ save one for the rest of us sufferables. ;-)

The thing is Giants fans don’t give a rats ass about any team but our own. Stop accepting mediocrity.
I’m sorry, but I can’t lump him in with some of the other owners in NY when he was the owner for two championship teams in the last 14 years. I’ve read people here lump him in with Dolan.
I’m a Met fan, but even I admit it’s ridiculous how Steve Cohen is viewed at as a savior who can do no wrong, while Mara is looked at as a buffoon. The titles matter - Mara has been awful of late, but those SB titles should never be discounted.
The Giants are the Mara’s and the Mara family are the Giants. It has been and always will be a family business. They run an org with class and integrity and take care of their players ... Can they make better decisions about personnel? Sure ... but it’s all in hindsight. Does anyone really believe they sit back and say how can we make this team worse? Seriously, when you buy into something you buy the whole package ... and if you don’t like the owners for whatever reason, start wearing putrid green or some other color.
Your Honor, I'd like to introduce into evidence exhibit #200
which will clearly demonstrate the fallacy held by many on BBI which suggests Giants fans are somehow smarter or classier than fans of other teams.
As you can clearly see, not only is the thread title confused and misleading, it also omits reference to the fact that the team has won more Superbowls than all but 5 teams in the NFL, including one in the decade referenced by the poster.
The song was not written by John Mara, the video does not include John Mara in any way, and it is not even clear John Mara has ever heard this song. So what we are left with, is a post by someone who doesn't seem to follow the team, know the history of the league, or understand what the word 'ode' means.

+ a million
How about the Falcons, who choked away their shot at beating the Patriots in the Super Bowl?
Giants fans whining about Mara are as dull as it gets
And yeah they won two titles with him as owner, but should we be holding that era up as a golden age? From 2005-2011 they went 68-44. On average that's less than a 10-6 season over those 7 years. I'm not saying this to disparage those teams; I'm saying that this was not an era of excellence to be modeled. The two, possibly three best teams of that period (05, 08, 10) didn't even win a playoff game. That era is characterized by teams that got hot at the right time - not by the culmination of some grand plan. Was Mara doing a great job as an owner? I don't feel like he was. I think it's likely that the impact of his ownership was felt downstream. As I see it he's been involved in three major decisions (I'm excluding the stadium, which could easily be a fourth) since he took over:
1. Transitioning from Coughlin
2. Transitioning from Reese
3. Transitioning from Eli
If the Giants are an oil tanker with Mara as captain, how has he performed in those three crucial tests of his navigational skills?
1. Coughlin - stuck around too long, left embittered, replaced by McAdoo after a weird transition from Gilbride at OC. The McAdoo/Eli situation was a disaster. McAdoo replaced by Shurmur to accommodate Eli, but that just showed he had no idea about QB play because Shurmur/Eli was an awful marriage. Judge looks like the goods, but even his hiring was overshadowed in part by the Rhule situation. Credit here goes to Judge; if he were less competent in the interview who knows where they go at head coach. Can anyone honestly say Mara has shown a steady hand replacing Coughlin?
2. Reese - stuck around too long, left in semi-disgrace after (correctly) considering the possibility that someone other than Eli should play quarterback. Then after Reese was fired, Accorsi interrupts his own Bert Jones stories to recommend Gettleman. After a dog and pony show interview process that involves Gettleman (Giants ties), Marc Ross (Giants ties), Kevin Abrams (Giants ties), and Louis Riddick (only outsider given a token interview), Mara hires Gettleman. Gettleman has been a disaster, leading the team to 15-33 and entering the fourth year with a poor roster - best case the Vegas over/under for this team will be 8 entering the season. And that may be a stretch. Shambolic transition from Reese.
3. Eli. Held onto him two, maybe three years too long. The 2017 benching incident and its aftermath were an embarrassment. Since 2017 (when McAdoo and Reese wanted Mahomes) the Giants have lived through four drafts that yielded Deshaun Watson, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Justin Herbert. They ended up with Daniel Jones, who is only the starter because they're trying to save face on the pick.
Coughlin. Reese. Eli. Three moments where the organization needed leadership characterized by intelligence, objectivity, and foresight. Those are the three waypoints of Mara's tenure as owner of the New York football Giants.
Great post. I can’t argue any of those points. Everything got messy since the Gilbride/McAdoo transition. It was likely Coughlin wasn’t okay with it and it led to everyone on different schedules. It became clear McAdoo was being groomed as the successor and ultimately inherited most of Coughlin’s staff.
A big issue with Reese, was the “win or else” mandate after Coughlin was fired. Such a dumb thing to say. Anytime you give a mandate like that, winning will come at the expense of the long term vision. It is exactly what happened in 2016. When the decision to keep Reese was made after 2015, he should have either been kept long term or not kept at all. The mandate just led to more shitty decisions.
I just hope now that there is long term unified vision in the building. I think it’s clear Judge & Gettleman are on different schedules, but I also think it’s understood Abrams is taking over to ultimately work with Judge.
Thoughtful post. I believe Mara is the type of guy that has a tough time making decisions. I can relate. He’s basically a good guy, but not a leader.
Getting rid of Coughlin in my view was a huge mistake, and signaled the beginning of the end for the Giants being a fairly consistent contender.
Reese’s mistake was trying to be a mentor for Marc Ross, and allowing Ross to have input to our personnel decisions. Ross was terrible.
I also disagree about Eli somewhat, while they probably should have drafted a QB sooner, there aren’t many QBs that could have made much of a difference in the post super bowl years. The Giants got old and they made many a draft mistake.
Friends, Neighbors, Relatives, the rest of you Defenders of the Faith
This post was meant to be a little light humor in the middle of our second COVID winter which, by some strangeness, was overrun by many righteous and deeply upset defenders of the faith. So goes life at BBI. Never a dull moment.
Irony of ironies, it took Go-Terps’ excellent analysis to semi-rescue things just as the stone throwing reached a crescendo. Terps, I don’t always agree with your stance on things, but you nailed it and saved me a bunch of writing. Exceptionally well done. Just the facts.
Must be the MD connection...
As far as douchbag - young 2/20 man, google it. There’s a fair chance I watched my first NYG game before your parents were born. Nuff said on that. No offense taken, you are just inaccurate.
In the end I’m glad I gave a bunch of you an opportunity to to let off some steam - covid’s been tough on all of us. However, I’m taking down names to see how you all defend the faith when the going gets tough mid season.
Ya got's ta know the lyrics...
Just when everyday seemed to greet me with a smile
Sunspots have faded and now I'm doing time
Now I'm doing time

Bad title ... Mara had nothing to do with that video. I doubt he knows who Soundgarden is.
Bad thread title.
Otherwise, I'd like a good fucking explanation of how a schmuck on his couch is supposed to impact change.
If you decide to follow any team, you have no choice but to accept the results that are in front of you.
While you are bitching about mediocrity, I'm guessing the four Lombardi's are the symbol you're using?

Your honor, the prosecution rests.
Hiring Gettlemen when the rest of the league is turning to younger candidates with fresh perspectives speaks to that.

No worries at all there.
Gettleman is able to turn back the clock since every season here seems to be year 1 of the rebuild...
