I really don't understand the sudden rush to run J.D. Davis out of town after he hit .288/.370/.483 over the past two seasons. It feels like some Mets fans are just miffed that they "only" got Francisco Lindor as their main piece of the offseason and now think the team should make moves just to make them.

If they can get some kind of actual upgrade over Davis, I'm sure they'd be open to it, but I doubt they're banging down all 29 other teams' doors in frantic search of replacing a pretty decent player.

Can you explain the Mets' Pillar signing to me? Can't really play CF anymore and seems to fit a similar role to Almora. Also who now starts the season in AAA Almora or Martinez (assuming everyone is healthy of course)?

My reaction to it was about the same as yours. I don't think he's an upgrade for them.

Yeah, it's tough to see the Cards shelling out a three-year deal for him after Mozeliak's recent comments. Twins would probably give him a soft landing if he decides to settle for one year (Cards could too at that point), but the Mets, Angels and Blue Jays all seem likelier to me at this point.

We're also at the point of the offseason where players will start getting hurt early in camp; with a notable injury on the right contender, a fit we didn't give much consideration to could open up in a hurry.

He's saying with Almora already here and Pillar no longer a good CF that he's not a clear upgrade to their bench given what they have. They have Almora/Martinez/McNeil with OF experience as well as Davis. Pillar is a below-average offensive CO so if he's below average in CF now (as the numbers suggest), not much of a value to the team.
I
DanMetroMan : 2/16/2021 4:51 pm : link
tend to agree with him. Do they need 3 weak-hitting bench OF options? Heredia career 84 wRC+, Almora 86, Pillar 87.

Martinez I view

as 1B/DH insurance for Smith/Alonso, and if there is no DH, would expect him to be at AAA or off the team. Pillar is a below average hitter for a corner OF? For a starter, or a backup? He is their 4th OF
Pillar
DanMetroMan : 2/16/2021 5:02 pm : link
Is a below average hitter even for a 4th OF for his career. Yes. He’s a very poor offensive player who at one point was an elite level CF. That was the entirety of his value
Pillar

Did he price himself completely out of the current market ??

Start adding up all these quarter-assed CF's and pretty soon you're spending real money.
Who else is there for a 4th OF?
KDavies : 2/16/2021 5:15 pm : link
He’s got some pop. .800 ops last year. The Mets are barren in the minors in the OF. It’s either a guy like this, deal prospects for even worse OFs, or pray you have no OF injuries. I have no issues adding Pillar. If he’s an above average CF and an above average hitter he’s getting paid 3x as much

But he's been a below-average CF since 2017. All due respect but I see a lot of people picking and choosing when to value 2020's "weird" season. I find it hard to believe Kevin Pillar at 32 suddenly became a solid offensive player (0 seasons league average with the bat before 2020) So sure, if he were still an above average CF AND an above average hitter.. he'd be a good starting CF. He's been below average with the glove for 3 seasons and below average with the bat his entire career outside of 2020 (a BABIP 40 points above his career mark)

Andy Martino claimed he was looking for "more than 5 years". The expectation is he lands back with the Red Sox (but not at more than 5 years).

Villar has some value if used correctly but if he's going to bury Guillorme, then I think they will live to regret it. He has plus bat to ball skills and a plus glove. He offers zero speed and very little power (despite being a decently hefty guy for the position) but he's the epitome of a player who would land with another team and perform. Is he good enough to be a regular? Who knows? But he's certainly talented enough where he should be given a legitimate chance. He's not a "fun to watch" young player. He's just very solid.
Quite
DanMetroMan : 2/16/2021 5:33 pm : link
frankly, Guillorme should be the starting 3b (a platoon with Davis) when an SP other than Carrasco/DeGrom/Thor pitch. The guys who pitch to more contact should have him out there over Davis. The flip side, is you need more runs scores when a Lucchesi/Yamamoto type starts over DeGrom, etc.
i'm more down on the Villar signing than Pillar
Eric on Li : 2/16/2021 5:46 pm : link
For a 4th OF'er I like Pillar's offensive profile as a compliment to the 3 starting lefties, doesn't K much, has some pop, steals the occasional base. There aren't too many 4th OF'ers who recently drove in 88 runs with 20 homers. A .286/.320/.464 triple slash for his career vs. lefties is solid.

Obviously the big question is the glove but unlike Villar his defensive metrics are very noisy and it's not all bad. His sprint speed is exactly in line with his better years and he's still stealing bases. The defensive metric that regressed is "outfield jumps", and changing stadiums and playing different positions would seem to be a semi-justifiable reason for that to happen. Cross our fingers he likes Citi.
Villar
DanMetroMan : 2/16/2021 5:51 pm : link
is a knucklehead who knows how to steal bases and "fake it" at a few spots. He's known to complain about playing time (less than ideal given his likely role here) but he walks at a okay clip and steals bases. He's called "versatile" simply because he can stand at a few positions but he's not a good fielder at any of them. He's not a bad player to have on the roster but if you over-extend him... warts will show.
Anderson
DanMetroMan : 2/16/2021 5:55 pm : link
1 year 2.5 with the Brewers. He's very boring but last 58 starts 104 era+, 4.44 FIP, not terrible for that price (I wasn't interested in him for the Mets)
The
DanMetroMan : 2/16/2021 5:57 pm : link
Athletic piece on Arrieta makes me even happier the Cubs outbid us. They are banking on their defense being better than the Phillies, improving his arm slot and familiarity with the coaches there. If he's excellent for them, kudos.
personally I’m pleased with the depth signings/trades
KDavies : 2/16/2021 6:42 pm : link
that The Mets have made. They could still use another reliable reliever and a 4/5 starter. The Mets have plenty of depth, which has been an issue recently. 1B/DH Martinez; OF Pillar/Almora/Smith; IF in addition to Guillorme, they have Villar, Peraza; SP guys like Yamamoto/Lucchesi; Bullpen guys like Barnes/McWilliams.

Everyone can pick apart a player like Pillar’s imperfections. Ideally, the Mets would be drafting and developing depth players, but they haven’t. Hopefully Lee is ready for next year. But they need the bench depth and the organizational depth to fill in in case of injuries.

I thought while not young by most definitions, Guillorme was fun to watch in that he was billed as an all glove no bat infielder.

So either he worked his ass off and his bat developed late or his 2020 BABIP (with a very SSS) of .463 created some fools gold (although his later minor league offensive #'s belie that definition too - even developed some pop in Syracuse - I thought he could be a juicing candidate just based on what I'd read).

Either way,I thought he was fun to watch just based on the expectations alone.

And I agree he should get a chance.

I wanted Turner but Im also totally fine with giving
ZGiants98 : 2/16/2021 8:36 pm : link
Davis/Guillorme another crack. They sort of hedge each other and if both fail you still have Villar as a third fallback.

We should sign Odorizzi and Rosenthal though.

John Flanigan
@jflan816
That is now five Mets on MLB Network’s Top 100 list:

89. Brandon Nimmo
67. Dominic Smith
66. Pete Alonso
35. Jeff McNeil
34. Michael Conforto

deGrom and Lindor still to come.

Maybe the Dodgers have more? Yankees? Padres?

not many teams probably have 8 top 100 players.

Syndergaard maybe would have cracked the list if he was healthy too.

It heavily favors recency bias which is why Carrasco, Stroman, and Syndergaard are all off. But theoretically, with average career seasons, you could see each or any getting back into the 100 mix IMO. This is a real solid club.

and Beane does have a track record of making crazy deals.

Back to Pillar - his highlights from 2019 look pretty good considering the negative metrics. And a bunch of them weren't just acrobatic, he was covering a lot of ground through gaps. I am one of the biggest proponents of defensive metrics generally speaking because I am a big proponent of defense and they are all we have but like most stats they likely aren't infallible. Not saying he's still as good as his best but I think it's possible if not likely he's going to be noticeably better than Nimmo.

I obviously like Chapman, but I'd rather not do that. But I probably would.

I do think though that trade (if it doesn't hurt the major league roster) makes the Mets even with the Dodgers.

an infield of Chapman, Lindor, McNeil and Alonso would be one of the best infields maybe ever. Is that hyperbole?

It's really good and almost definitely best current but not sure how they'd rank all time. Even semi-recently Arod, Cano, Jeter, Texeira was probably still better.

I just want to fill the roster with the best depth available. Rich Hill and Brad Hand would almost definitely be Mets if I were GM and they'd cost you 0 prospects. Same with Kike Hernandez (or Marwin) instead of Villar. And they'd still be under the LTT I think.

I don't think this team needs another major move. They certainly don't need to force one and I'm glad they haven't. Just surprised they haven't shopped for some of the higher end role players. But if they get Rosenthal and Walker or Odorizzi I'll feel a lot better.
