NFT: Has anyone every been to Big Sky, Montana

theold5j : 2/17/2021 7:41 pm
In the summer. If so, how did you like it. Would you recommend with kids.
I've been there many times in all seasons
rebel yell : 2/17/2021 8:17 pm : link
and as a skier I love the winter, but Montana is simply stunning in the summer. You're in high desert so it's dry, the nights are cool and it's called big sky for a reason. Trust me, you'll never want to leave. Big Sky resort is nice, but you should also try to get away from there for a bit...at least into Bozeman. A few hours drive east is the site of Custer's Last Stand. That's really cool. And you owe it to yourself to see some part of the Yellowstone River.
Thanks a lot

I was to grand teton and the southern to Central parts of yellowstone a few years ago. Was thinking of doing the northern parts of yellowstone and anything montana has to offer.
Big Sky

It Gods country. Fly into Bozeman and drive 191 to Big Sky and watch as the road meander along side the Gallatin river, cliffs and beautiful country side. Stop at the coffee Pot cafe address below and then treat everyone to great BBQ dinner when you’re settled in at The River House. Bring fishing pole and especially fly rods.. Gallatin river is a blue ribbon stream -rent waders etc. at Grizzly outfitters 47855 Gallatin Rd
Gallatin on 191.
Drive to Yellowstone and watch for Elk, Buffalo etc. and of course Old Faithful and the score of mini geysers. Visit the Wolf and Bear santuary just outside the gates as you approach from Big Sky.
Fyi-The resort was founded by Montana native Chet Huntley, the retired co-anchorman of The Huntley–Brinkley Report of NBC News.
Winter activities include skiing and snowboarding, seven terrain parks, zip-line, and snowshoeing. Summer attractions include zip-lines, archery, tennis, hiking, and mountain biking trails on the mountain. Golf and horseback riding are available near the Meadow Village at an elevation of 6,300 feet
You need to visit the River House B Q at 45130 Gallatin Rd
Gallatin Gateway, MT 59730
And The Coffee Pot cafe 80795 Gallatin Rd #2, On 191 as you head towards Big Sky..you won’t regret it.
If the kids won’t go email me back... I’ll go.. ;-)
Need more info - leave it here..
Thanks

Great info
I know nothing about this type of stuff
bigbluehoya : 2/17/2021 9:14 pm : link
but as I approach 40 years old, and I have 3 little kids, lately a lot of my daydreaming about the future has made me want to prioritize taking care of my body so that I'm in good enough shape to enjoy this type of travel and activity when I reach the stage of life where I have the time/$ to do so.

Well, I'm 77 and I feel no different that I did at 40. I've always been an outdoorsman, I'm a fly fisherman, scuba diver, golfer, play volleyball etc. The point of all this? You're on the right track taking care of your body, and with a little luck you'll have decades with which to enjoy the adventures you're thinking of. The one caveat is to do those things as soon as you can, don't put them off thinking you have plenty of time.
I agree in dreaming and doing what you can now
SCGiantsFan : 2/18/2021 7:55 am : link
Do what you can near by or via special trips. It will keep the dream and spark alive for the future.

Im cutting and pasting part of this thread and emailing it to myself. Wife and I plans to Rv full time, while still working, and visit this area of the country and generally explore our country at a slow pace.

Nature does my soul good!

Need to keep this thread for future vacation planning.
theold5j - I was in Big Sky years ago on a guy trip
chick310 : 2/18/2021 9:14 am : link
where we mostly played golf, but did some fishing and hiking as well. Just a stunning environment and different world than city or suburban America for certain.

It has plenty of other activities, many that would be great with kids including horseback riding, river rafting, visiting Yellowstone. Highly recommend Yellowstone as it is just a jewel to see.

Good luck!
Been there hunting a few times...

you really need to spend some time in the woods vs watching Montana roll by from the car
I have been looking
pjcas18 : 2/18/2021 9:24 am : link
at moving out west or at least buying the land before prices get even worse if we haven't already passed that point.

I had my search constrained to Wyoming but expanded North into Montana and the Bozeman general area (including Big Sky).

Love Big Sky based on research, and it's on my list of places to visit and confirm so thanks for all the good info in this thread.

if at all possible. Little Bighorn and Custer, too. They're in the neighborhood, if you understood that Montana is huge and "neighborhood" out there is relative.

PJ... are you an outdoors person? Do you like to hunt and fish?

For me, if I am going to move out there, I am buying a house on a lake.
Buddy on a group text chat is in real estate in Big Sky...
BurberryManning : 2/18/2021 10:24 am : link
Every other day it seems as if it's another multi-million deal that he's talking about. He says its a feeding frenzy with the big tech crowd from CA and WA snapping up everything in sight to play cowboy. Very Yellowstone-esque.

Never hunted, but I love the outdoors, fish as often as I can, golf, hike, kayak/canoe/boat, own guns and would hunt (not big game/exotic that makes me sick - but deer, fowl, etc. things I'd eat) but I grew up in the city so never really had the chance.

I'd love to live on a lake or at least have a lake home to visit.
Just spent some time researching...
EricJ : 2/18/2021 11:31 am : link
waterfront homes in Montana....small place on a lake or river for about $250k. 2-3 months in the summer then back to Florida for the rest of the year
Yes
montanagiant : 2/18/2021 11:52 am : link
For summer fun you want to check out FLathead lake rentals. Gorgeous area with excellent fishing, scenery, and plenty to do. It is right near Glacier National Park which has the Road to the Sun and the city of Kalispell. Lots of shopping but it is not overdeveloped and you also have Big Mountain ski area which has cool activities in the summer.

The other place to go in the Summer would be Bozeman. A very nice college town that is located just North of the Montana entrance to Yellowstone. It also has some gorgeous hot springs and some of the best fly fishing in the world.
A couple other aspects to keep in mind regarding Summers in Montana
montanagiant : 2/18/2021 12:05 pm : link
Is that it will still be sunny out at 9:30 - 10:00 @ night.

Another thing to keep in mind is if you're doing a driving tour that takes you through some back areas make sure you pay attention to your gas. The Western Side of Montana is the populous side but If your heading from the East and you happen to be checking out Ft Peck Reservoir for fishing or Montana's badlands in the East (absolutely stunning) Gas is far and few between, so don't pass up filling up when you can. There are a few scenic routes that stretch a gas tank.

Be cautious driving through some of the Reservations especially on weekend nights.

If you time your trip around Autumn one of the most impressive sights to take in is the Elk rutting season in Mammoth Hot Springs near the town of Gardiner. Literally, hundreds of Elk take over this area. One thing though is do not get too close to them during this time.

In another year or two I am planning to move to MT. I can hit you up for advice when that time comes? Whatever montanians think about citiots who take their wealth to MT and want to change it into where they came from... I am the exact opposite of that. I want to flee development and change. I want to move near a small town in western MT and quietly fit in as a local as quickly as possible.
Only been there once, in the winter.
Bill in UT : 2/18/2021 1:53 pm : link
stayed at Big Sky Resort. Place was nice, as I remember. First day lifts were cold due to severe cold. Every other day we had 4 inches of fresh powder overnight. Poker tables off the dining room. Definitely take a trip to Yellowstone. We took a bus and had to stop on highway due to buffalo crossing. On a different trip, in spring, we stopped at Custer's Last Stand. That was the biggest disappointment of trip. A short movie and a walk around a big, empty field.

Just Email me, buddy, It's in my profile.

One of the more secluded towns in a gorgeous area is Lincoln, MT. You're situated in between Missoula, Great Falls, and Helena, inside an area called the Blackfoot Pathways. Excellent hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, X-country asking, etc.

It's the same town where they caught the Unabomber.

Yeah Bill, Custer's last stand is a waste of time. It's not even that pretty of a drive there since it's located in the rolling hills section of Montana. Skiing in Montana was always great because the hills don't get overly packed and they really aren't known for their nightlife at the resorts.
Been going there every summer since I was a kid...
WideRight : 2/19/2021 2:22 pm : link

It totally sucks. Don't go there. Ever. And tell your friends to stay away too.
Another nice

place in that general area (it's about 300 miles from Big Sky) is Sun Valley/Ketchum, Idaho. It's a pain to get to though. They have a nice resort and a few small ski mountains that are not crowded at all. Hemingway is buried there. We took a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the wilderness to a restaurant that served big pieces exotic meat like elk. It was a pretty unique experience.
