NFT: Pillars of the Earth Book Series - Book 3?

DC Gmen Fan : 2/18/2021 8:29 am
I'm not much of a reading fan but I've finished Pillars of the Earth and its sequel, World Without End by Ken Follett and I am blown away. Even at over 800 pages each, these are by far the best books I have ever read and are what I would consider page turners. I looked forward to my nightly reading.

Follett's historical research and writing about the Middle Ages is remarkable.

I was about to move onto book 3, Column of Fire, but have read mixed reviews. Anyone read it yet?

Anyway I highly recommend Pillars and World Without End.
Pillars is one of my favorite reads

Damn you William Hamleigh!!

I never realized there was a sequel, looks like I've found my next book to read.

Andy, you will not be disappointed with World Without End. It does start a little slow, but the pace picks up rapidly. I did about 2 chapters a night.
The Pillars of the Earth miniseries was pretty good too

Yes, there were inevitable departures from the book plot, but Ian McShane as Waleran Bigod? How can you not love that?

I have read Column of Fire, as well as the prequel to the Kingsbridge series "The Evening and the Morning". Both are great and will keep you turning pages just like the first two. The Century Trilogy is fantastic too, which goes from WW1 to nearly present day.

For a great quick read by Follett...one of my all time favorites.

Agreed!

Pillars was hands down the best book I've ever read. The sequel was good to. The new third one Columns of Fire is a prequel and while it was a good story it has very little to do with Pillars and not really as good a book as Pillars although that would be a very tall task!
Follett

Follett is one of the true greats. Love the Kingsbridge books, I have not yet begun the new one. Eye of the Needle and Code to Zero are two that I loved.

Agreed, Pillars and World Without End were 2 of the best books I’ve ever read, and the Pillars mini-series was very good. Even though they changed parts of the ending for TV drama purposes, well worth a watch

I haven’t read the 3rd book either, curious to hear from any who have
I thought this

Interesting I'll have to check it out...

... my nightly reading for the last few months has been John Gwynne... "The Faithful and the Fallen" (4 books) first and the "Of Blood and Bone" trilogy. Good stuff.
Read the Trilogy

and just finished the Prequel, "The Evening and the Morning."

Kingsbridge is called Dreng's Ferry in the 900s.

Very entertaining read. A little rushed, back-and-forth at the end, but still quite engaging all and all.
If you enjoyed

The first 2 might as well finish the trilogy, imo. Even a so-so book by someone you like reading is often good.

And, FYI there’s a prequel called “The Evening and the Morning” about how King’s Bridge comes to be. It’s focused on a young boat builder named Edgar, how a Viking raid turns his life upside down, and a Norman noblewoman named Ragna who moves from what’s now France to the area to marry. Both go through some sh*t. It’s a fast read for a long book. I enjoyed it.
There are so many excellent books

and so many excellent historical fiction books. Those are among the best. If you love books but don't love reading, try audible.com. Also, while Overdrive software sucks, your library system probably has a good selection of audiobooks as well.

I was a rabid reader virtually all of my life. But once I started listening to audiobooks, I can't really pick up a book again. I'm not great at sitting still and doing one thing. So I love listening to audiobooks while I do anything else that needs doing. Great for multitasking, great for car rides, great for falling asleep to a book.
I just finished the prequel

I have yet to find a Ken Follett book I was disappointed in. And yes, 800+ pages, and you still want more. That is the mark of a great storyteller.

Enjoy them all.
