NFT: Covid Vaccine - 2nd dose. Oh man

GMAN4LIFE : 2/18/2021 8:56 am
Man is this second dose kicking my ass. Got the shot yesterday.

Was fine up until bed time. Couldnt sleep right, woke up with body aches and a mild fever. My wife felt the same way but my parents however feel perfectly fine. Another friend of mine ,around the same age, also feels the same. Almost exactly the same.

Any reasoning to older people feeling fine after the second shot but the semi younger crowd feeling like shit?

Which vaccine did you take?

Just wondering...
Oh and i took the moderna shot

My colleague at work, a senior, said the 2nd shot was tough
BillT : 2/18/2021 9:02 am : link
So I’m not sure that’s true.

My buddy works for Northwell and he said the 2nd Moderna shot kicked his ass too. Similar to what you're experiencing.

I'm getting my first shot next Thursday at Stony Brook. I believe it's the Pfizer one. So I'll definitely be following this thread.

Feel better!
mixed reviews
jestersdead : 2/18/2021 9:04 am : link
Ive read mixed results on the second shot. There is an article in the athletic that discusses it as being a rude awakening. My mom, 70 had her 2nd shot last week and didn't mention any of the symptoms. My dad goes for his 2nd shot next week, it will be interesting to see if he has any symptoms others have reported
Interesting.

My Nurse practitioner sister received the Moderna vaccine. The first one is what kicked her ass. Second was no problem for her. My other sister also received the Moderna. First shot, no problem...has yet to receive the second.
i think its something like 70% feel...
Italianju : 2/18/2021 9:09 am : link
like crap after the second shot. My parents are late sixties and just got it last week, my dad felt perfectly fine but my mom had the flu like symptoms and all that. Im not sure age really has much to do with it, had a couple friends late thirties get it and again one felt perfectly fine, the other felt pretty crappy.
Definitely a mixed

bag of results from the people I know.

My 2nd Shingles shot kicked my butt. Woke up a bit feverish took a couple aspirin and in 30 minutes all was well.

Have their been any warnings on using aspirin/Tylenol etc after the covid shots? (I think MDs say use Tylenol for relief from vaccines, but not sure).
By any chance were you positive for antibodies?
regulator : 2/18/2021 9:11 am : link
Several people I know who were positive (earlier Covid case, either diagnosed, or asymptomatic) reported the 2nd round of the Pfizer really kicked their ass. Anecdotal, but it makes sense considering even a mRNA vaccine will elicit an immune response. Don’t know anyone who fit that same bill on the Moderna vax, but no reason to believe it was any different.

In fact, an acquaintance who was hospitalized in the spring actually declined to take the 2nd Pfizer shot because the first one really hit him hard, and has legitimate concerns about the follow-up dose.
I was able to

schedule a vaccine appointment through the VA and will get it in a few weeks. Sad to said, having a vaccine shot kick from the military kick my ass would be a familiar feeling

MD's told me to take tyelonol only if i had the symptoms. so i took it, because i had the symptoms hahaha
I got lucky as hell

Didn't really have any symptoms after the 2nd Moderna.
had my first Moderna shot - no side effects whatsoever -

Got second Moderna shot a week ago ago. I was terrified based on the reactions some colleagues had...fever, chills, headache, nausea, etc.

I had none of them, except extreme fatigue in the legs the following morning. I felt like I had run 5 marathons in 5 consecutive days. By around 5 PM Friday, it was gone.

Thankful I got the shots.
Got the 2nd

shot and was knocked on my ass. Had to go to work and could not even function
There's a lot of variabilty between individuals
Bill L : 2/18/2021 9:38 am : link
Clinical trials for both Pfizer and Moderna showed that about 60% of people had some sort of side effect (the top 3, I believe) were headaches, myalgia, fatigue.

*But* if you broke the data down into >=55 years old versus <55 years old, the older age group had many fewer side effects. That sounds like what people here are saying, comparing themselves to their parents).

The reasons aren't clear, but older people do have decreased ability to make immune responses and it may be that they are prone to less inflammation from the vaccine stimulus. Or, as we joke about it here (but perhaps there is some truth to it) old people always have headaches, muscles aches and are tired so they don't know they're having a vaccine side effect. It is worth pointing out that Shringrix seems to kick everybody's ass, so old people are not always without side effects.

FWIW, if you look at the COVID vaccine clinical data, the placebo group had almost as much frequency of the same side effects, so it might just be the other stuff, including the physical part of injection itself, that goes along with the mRNA that is causing many of the side effects.

And, my workplace still has not allowed us to get vaccinated, so I am extremely jealous of all of you.
My parents took the second dose
Essex : 2/18/2021 9:40 am : link
my mom got sick from it but my dad was totally fine. My mom was sick for a few hours with chills and aches, but it did subside pretty quickly. Overall, though, a few hours of discomfort is better than having symptoms or worse from Covid.
Keep in mind, the side effects
DC Gmen Fan : 2/18/2021 9:42 am : link
are most likely a result of an immune response. Generally, younger, healthier people will probably have a stronger immune response.

First one I didn't feel any different whatsoever.

This one knocked me on my ass when I got up this morning. I'm achy everywhere

I know few people who had any problem with first shot other than a sore arm that subsides in a day. Good luck.
As with the virus itself, it seems to vary greatly person to person
Matt M. : 2/18/2021 9:47 am : link
regardless of age, prior infection, etc. My 102 year old grandmother, my aunt, and uncle all got their 2nd dose this week and were perfectly fine outside a little soreness in the arm. Same for my 70+ boss and her husband. Same for me. The first dose hade a larger effect on me, but still not terrible.

There's nothing to be nervous about. Even if you do get knocked on your ass for a day, it's plenty worth it.

For a while. Cut off for some reason
my understanding re: the 2nd dose
Rick Morehouse : 2/18/2021 9:53 am : link
is that younger people, due to their more robust immune systems, show a stronger reaction to the second shot. I could be way off, though and am no expert.

I am 39, and had my first shot yesterday (Pfizer). Was a little tired last night and my arm is sore near the injection site, but otherwise I feel normal.

Best of luck to the OP!

My wife is 54 and the second shot was horrible for her..

Wrong side of 70 years old. No reaction to the 1st shot 3 weeks ago and slight shoulder pain at injection spot. Took that shot early morning. Took the 2nd shot on Tuesday late in the afternoon. Only reaction on Tuesday was fatigue but that’s how I usually feel at night. Woke up Wednesday feeling like I had been in a fight with Mike Tyson. That lasted until lunch and I began to feel better little by little. Woke up today, Thursday, feeling fine.
could it
totowa_gman : 2/18/2021 10:05 am : link
possibly be due to the fact that this is an experimental treatment and that it was tested for 3 months? Currently, you are the experiment for others so please report your symptoms.

1. You’re NOT sick it’s a reaction
2. Symptoms subside within 36 hours usually.
Small price to pay to get us back to “normal”
Bravo to all for getting your shots. Not a given in our society
it's really heartening

to hear all of you getting the vaccine... I presume i am months away from being eligible but between BBI and my personal network, lots of vaccine stories going around which is good!
What Bill L and Rick Morehouse said.
River Mike : 2/18/2021 10:31 am : link
First, the response is very individual. But be aware that many of the symptoms you have from any viral infection are due less from the virus itself than from the body's immune response to it, fever, inflammation, etc. So, while reactions are individual, when considering groups, older people tend to have a weaker immune response, so on the whole that may be manifested in fewer symptoms. And while the vaccine is not itself a virus, it does stimulate an immune response perhaps against the mrna and certainly the resultant protein

The weaker immune response is why us old guys get a higher dose of seasonal flu vaccine. One of the major reasons for death with Covid is a very robust cascade in the immune response that proceeds out of control. But once again, understand that even people in any group are individuals each with their own immune response.
the younger you are the more reaction you get from your stronger
gtt350 : 2/18/2021 10:33 am : link
immune system. older adults have milder reactions, basically a sore arm for a day or two. Be thankful you got those reactions it means the vaccine is working as is your body.
Got my 1st Shot Monday.
redwhiteandbigblue : 2/18/2021 10:42 am : link
Arm soreness is subsiding this morning. Actually more tender than sore now. Had the Moderna vaccine. As for the 2nd dose, if I get knocked on my ass for a day or 2, bring it on. Small price to pay for the overall benefit. Statistics are showing that Moderna has about double the percentage of side effects than Pfizer but still only single digit percentages (excluding the relatively minor aches, headaches, low grade fever). May be due to the fact that Moderna vaccine is triple the dosage of Pfizer and they are both RNA vaccines. It will be interesting to see if Moderna lowers dosage in the future as they are already testing lower dosages to see how it affects efficacy.
2nd dose yesterday

as well, no side effects other than the sore shoulder. My MIL was basically in bed for 24 plus hours straight after hers, we both got Moderna.
2nd dose
NJBlueTuna : 2/18/2021 10:49 am : link
For younger people, especially, often has symptoms of chills fever fatigue and aches for 24-36 hours as you are exhibiting a strong immune response as your body was now conditioned/trained to identify the spike protein (unique to Covid) via the 1st dose. After the second dose, your body is now ready to unleash a full antibody and T and B “killer”(that’s a good thing) Arsenal against the foreign invader your body now recognizes. This is a GOOD thing and a sign of a healthy strong immune system which is stronger in younger people. Ie, you get fever as your body is literally raising its temp to burn out the virus. You get aches and fatigue bc a strong immune system ramp up is exhausting on the body.

First Moderna shot gave me a 101 degree fever
NYerInMA : 2/18/2021 10:56 am : link
chills, and soreness for a couple days. I'm 39 so I expected to have a reaction. Getting my second shot a week from tomorrow so we'll see how it goes.

I remember, after first shot, a nurse saying 'Now wait over there for 15 minutes. We need to observe you.' I was completely taken aback & responded 'Observe me for what?' She replied 'To see if you have any adverse reactions'.

Now, being an anxious fellow to begin with, that was a long 15 minutes, Haha.

I’m a hypochondriac to begin with so I’m bound to get somatic symptoms.

“Are you feeling dizzy or lightheaded?”

“Actually, now that you mention it...”
