Everyone should check out the latest interview Jerry and Chris did this week with Mark Bavaro. He has some very interesting comments about facing the 49ers in the 80’s and his feelings towards his teammates and Parcells. Link - ( New Window )
Really loved hearing about his entry into the team, especially the bit about when he stood up to LT for the first time. Also can never get tired of hearing him talk about how much he hated the Eagles.
I would have liked to have heard more about his book. He kind of downplayed it, but I wanted to know how autobiographical it was. Back when I read it, I really wondered, especially with the LT type character. But, he made it seem very fictional.
Interesting comments about how he didn’t get along with Faust at Notre Dame, and how he wasn’t always the dedicated hard worker we came to know, which he’s very honest in admitting is in part why he wasn’t more highly touted going into the 85 draft.
For all the epic Giants draft whiffs we’ve reviewed ad nauseum, we haven’t had too many better finds than Bavaro in round 4
Sometime ago,I was waiting in a line where Mark was to get him to sign a mini helmet. He & his wife were married by the same priest,Father Maurice(a 6-5 280 lb former Notre Dame parish priest),that married my ex & I (At the end of our ceremony,he chants "Go Irish")As I told Mark my Father Maurice story, people behind me were screaming & yelling for me to move on,hurry up,blah, blah, blah! At that point,Mark stood up,said "I'm talking to this man, stop being rude & I'll get to you when I get to you!" The room went completely silent!lol We finished talking about Father Mo(to complete silence),he wished me well, signed my mini-helmet,we shook hands & I was on my way!

On the 49ers: “These guys are just a bunch of pussies.”
A lot of revisionist history by Bavaro.
"One guy".....yup, just Ronnie Lott was the only physical defender on that team. Yeah, Charles Haley, Bill Romanowski were cucks indeed, just to name two...
The stories of those battles were the Giants' defense slowing down the 49ers offense. The other story was there for the ride. If the Giants offense was 20% better but defense 20% worse, they'd have never won any of those games. So to attempt to diminish that defense is stupid.
The Giants only beat the 49ers one time in that era allowing 17+ points (1986 MNF). Needed LT and Banks to keep the score down to 13, 14 points. Was the only way.
Easy to talk tough when you only need two touchdowns to likely win.

He was talking about the 1986 season. Romanowski was in college, Haley was a rookie who only played on passing downs and in the Divisional Round playoff game, they had some injuries, so backups were now starting. At that time, Lott was, by far, the most physical presence on the 49ers D. Madden even says as much in the broadcast of the Division Round game.
Yeah, I remember Parcells discussing the 86 Niners once
and saying they were reloading a bit during the mid 80s before becoming a juggernaut in 1988-90. Obviously the '90 games were slugfests.
The '87 Niners were no joke either. His name escapes me, but a Vikes WR went insane in the divisional round vs. them for the Minnesota upset. The '88 team was a weird one; struggled a bit with the whole Montana vs. Young drama before turning it on late & winning it all. The '89 team...loaded. And '90 loaded too, except they didn't win it all because of us., :-)
