Jonnu Smith - FA TE

Mark from Jersey : 2/20/2021 8:35 am
I don't read BBI like I used to but after a quick search for Jonnu it seems like Jonnu Smith has not been discussed much on BBI as a potential FA acquisition.

The TE had 35 catches two seasons ago and over 40 catches last year, 8 of which were TDs. His offensive production fell off a bit this past season after Lewan was hurt as he was asked to block more. In addition to helping with pass protection after Lewan went down he is accustom to run blocking in Tennessee's run heavy offense. He is also only 25.

The issue is likely that he will be overbid a bit given this is a weak TE FA class. Also WR & EDGE are likely higher on the priority list for FA. That being said if the Giants are more focused on a ball control type offense, particularly given Barkley's return (who knows how he will be post injury) it would seem a solid two-way TE could be a higher priority than we think.
His name has been mentioned here several times

If we upgrade the WRs, with saquons return, Kaden smith is a very competent starting nfl tight end. He isn’t elite athletically but he has great hands, good blocker and can get open underneath in zone coverage. He’s a decent redzone target as well I just think Garret was awful last year at utilizing the few guys he had.
Spend the $$ on a WR1

Find a 2 way tight end in the draft.

FA is worth spending for difference makers. DG better get a Golladay/Godwin caliber FA.

We need to see what we have in Daniel Jones as year 3 is his reckoning. A proven FA receiver over a 1st rd rookie would be the route I take if im weighing how to spend our assets

I agree with you on Smith. Shurmur had no problem integrating him into the game plan when Engram was hurt in 2019. I remember thinking this guy looks more like a first rounder than Engram in the later part of that season.
I think finding a TE in FA would be a good idea
BillT : 2/20/2021 9:12 am : link
I think Engram has to go. I can't imagine watching another year of his ineptitude. Therefore, we need a guy who can step right in and Smith will come at a reasonable cost. Guys who can contribute and be reasonably priced are the kind of FA we should be perusing rather than the top dollar guys like the big time WRs.
watched 10+ Titan games last year
Giantsfan79 : 2/20/2021 9:13 am : link
he really benefits from the offensive system he's in - Tannehill is good a play action and Henry at RB gives him chances he might not see elsewhere. He only runs 5 yard routes he's doesn't have a lot of experience with deeper routes, he's not fast, and when it's a big play that requires him to make the catch he tends to drop the ball.

I don't think we should be approaching
UConn4523 : 2/20/2021 9:22 am : link
FA or the Draft with a priority of figuring out any position. We upgrade where we can, that simple.

I really like Smith. I don't know what he'd command but adding him can help us immensely. It would give Jones a reliable pass catching TE, it would allow us to move Engram more, and it would allow us to trade or let Engram walk after this season.

This is how a TE is supposed to play. They need to be able to block and act as a safety valve for their QB. Let’s bring in him and Corey Davis.

Very good early in the season then completely dissapeared in the second half. That is what he is. Excellent in spurts but not close to a foundational player. Barely a top 15 TE.

As the OP mentioned, you have to consider the fact that he was basically asked to be a tackle the second half of the season to help out Lewan’s backup. He wasn’t running as many routes as he did the first half of the year.
I am among the biggest Engram detractors on this board.
Vin_Cuccs : 2/20/2021 10:00 am : link
I was not a fan of his coming out of Mississippi, and I wasn’t happy with the selection when it occurred.

Even so, I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt. He’s been given chance after chance after chance to prove himself, but he continually makes backbreaking errors throughout a game. I can’t keep hearing about his “potential.” The drops. The injuries. The poor blocking. He’s turning into a liability. He’s on his third coaching staff with the same minuscule results.

The most frustrating part, and the reason why I bring this up, is because I highly doubt he’s going anywhere. Unfortunately, there is no room for Smith, or any mid-tier TE for that matter, on this roster while Engram is a member of this team. Everyone in the organization and on the coaching staff sings his praises whenever given the opportunity to do so. I feel somewhat bad saying all this, because he seems like a very nice young man, but in my opinion, he’s worn out his welcome.

I do think he has some limited trade value (a 5th, maybe a 4th round pick) but they had had several opportunities to move him, and basically hung up the phone. There is absolutely no evidence that they’re even considering trading him.

I don’t mind Smith as a player, but I do think he’s a bit overrated, and a product of that Tennessee offense. He’ll be expensive, and I’m not sure I’d spend valuable cap space on him.

Again, this is all irrelevant while Engram is on the roster, and it sure seems like he will be.

Agreed Vin, I fail to understand why they seem to love this guy so much. Not from a personal perspective, but in terms of production and impact on the game. When a TE is single handedly losing 2-3 games for you in a season it’s a big problem. Accountability has to come into play somewhere in the equation. If a RB fumbles the ball they are typically pulled out of the game for a period of time. It should be the same for TE’s that generate constant turnovers on catchable passes.

people look at Engram's inconsistent hands and look to replace him with receiving threat. if the offense is built on the running game and Barkley, maybe they need to focus on a TE who is a dominant blocker.

was also thinking about Firkser - but he may have signed for one more year

While painful to watch, that video makes me laugh harder now every time I see it. I think it’s the music they play to accompany Engrams fantastic play.

My wife is a casual fan at best and she can’t stop watching it. She asked me how there can be a video nearly four minutes long of one starter playing that bad. Any competent TE would be a big upgrade for us. He just can’t catch and I don’t believe it can be fixed.
Would be very surprised if there were not fairly big changes
chick310 : 2/20/2021 10:35 am : link
within the NYG Tight End group this offseason. The unit basically only gives snaps to 3 guys: one that is really only a pass receiver, one that is only a blocker and a guy that is in-between both. And really none of them do a good job at their assignments.

Smith could be a somewhat helpful addition. It is difficult to suggest what TEs that start around this league that wouldn't be helpful in some form or fashion.

Burning FA dollars at WR would be terrible. All of them have warts. The move is to address the defense (Ingram, Dupree plus our own) in FA and hammer offense in the draft.

will...

Still Nelson Agholor interests me.
Don't waste $ on a FA TE - draft Tommy Tremble
Red Dog : 2/20/2021 2:54 pm : link
Tremble is a 6'4", 248-pound red shirt sophomore from Notre Dame who has declared for the draft.

He's supposed to be the best blocker of the TEs coming out this year, and he can catch enough to move the chains or score in the red zone.

Should be available in the 3rd or maybe 4th round, so they can use earlier picks to fill bigger needs.

And trade EE for whatever they can get for him. I'd take a 3rd all day long, or something like a 4th and a 7th, or even just a 4th if that's the best they can do.
Jonnu Smith
WillVAB : 2/20/2021 3:00 pm : link
Has been injury prone in the NFL. Thieves would be another dumb signing.

I get that people want to add weapons to the offense but FA isn’t the place to do it this year.
i'm not a fan

i've followed him for fantasy reasons and you'd think when delanie walker went down this guy would get more catches/targets but it seems like it didn't matter.

decent redzone threat but very underwhelming.

This is where my head’s at. 2 WRs and a TE in the draft seems to be the best value to add some pop to the offense. There’s a lot of WR talent in this draft. Take a WR round 2, Tremble in the 3rd or 4th, then another WR 5-7.
